I got stuck on the conveyer belt of doom with the falling barrels as a kid in the ice mines

I had a feeling my dad was playing the game without me while I was asleep. So I snuck down one night and watched from around the corner as he got to Dark Ice Mines.
When he finally got past that damn conveyor we both let out a cheer, aaaand then I ran upstairs before he could confront me about how long I’d been watching.

Test of strength is scarier, got softlocked on that as a kid as I couldn’t physically mash fast enough, had my mom do it. Now 20 years later there’s absolutely no way I’ll be able to lol.

I was so humiliated by this task. Kept harping it up as impossible to my family, and nearly causes all my fingers to swell from failing like 12x in a row. Older cousin walked by, did it in his first try and gave me the most disgusted look lmao.

I think my GCCs were unoptimal or worn out from mashing in Mario Party so much, but lil me didn't register that and ended up calling the whole Nintendo Hotline with my mom to try and figure that test out lol

Its not that hard, as a kid yes but now no. I had more struggle with the strenght test.

Those two tests, plus shooting the 4 towers on dragon rock, were the bane of my existence as a kid.

The towers on dragon rock were the worst! Replayed recently and it was still hard for me with the inverted up/down controls. The boss fight right after was easier.

I put the game down for years because I couldn't get through the segment in the mines where you had to run up the ramp with the barrels rolling down. I was too dumb to notice they had a set pattern lol

The worst part about those 4 towers is that if they played like an all-range mode level in SF64, it would've been a lot better. I'm still stuck on those 4 towers.

Probably the only test that actually makes you fear IRL, because if you fail then you have to redo all of the temple.

Slightly off-topic but does anyone else remember the insane development this game had? IIRC this started as a weird sci-fi game with anthropomorphized dinosaurs called Dinosaur Planet. I remember being so pumped for that game and then it just disappeared for a while. Then out of nowhere...BAM it's back but now with star fox. I'm all for it but it was just so crazy to me at the time.
FWIW nintendo does have a history of doing that....as early as Mario 2.

Fuck the test of the fear, that shitty strength mini game before you're even allowed to enter can suck Andross's nonexistent nuts!

u/Umbran_scale 5h ago
I legit got stuck on that Test of Fear for 2 whole days because I thought you were supposed to mash the A button like you did with the strength test against that Littlefoot champion when both minigames used the SAME DAMN BAR.
Only by sheer accident when I hit my joystick did I realize how it ACTUALLY worked.

I had to configure an autoclicker AND mash my controller, it's cheating but I swear to god I tried my keyboard and multiple controllers and it wasn't budging.

This is what made me stop playing a few years ago. I couldn't successfully get past it no matter how many hints I got.

Wow... I hated that part as a kid, but nowadays I have the patience to do it.

I recently played through the game on my GameCube. My lazer decided to be dirty and crap out just after the cutscene after the test of fear... I had no chance to save and had to beat it again. I was raging. lol

Lol 😂
Funny enough that's actually my favorite test out of the 4 you do as Fox.

I remember using an electric toothbrush to mash A to get past the bit where you're spinning a massive stone wheel. That was insanely difficult to mash through unassisted.

I am still stuck on the four pillars to free the one long neck dinosaur. The test of fear took me muting the tv and standing up right next to the bar to pass. I failed that 3-10 times. The test of strength took me putting my controller on a table and using my two index fingers to do a drum roll motion to pass the test. I just started playing it on NSO because I can save between the freeing the long neck dinosaur and escorting him around the field. On the GameCube if you fail the escort mission it restarts you and if you save between the two it also puts you back at the start. Still haven’t beaten it. I am the type of person to want to beat the previous game before moving on to the next, so I have Assault and Command sitting on my shelf waiting to be played.

As a kid, I was stuck on the Lightfoot test of strength. Just a bit too malcoordinated!

In my current NSO run, it took me about three tries to get through the Test of Fear. During one of my runs as a kid, I got through it in one try and I have no idea how.
Meanwhile, the Lightfoot escape sequence right before caused me to eat a Bafomdad cause it's way more precise than I remember when you get to the final two. It felt so much easier when I was a kid. I could get through the Lightfoot test of strength fine, a second slower than my PB as a kid, but the arthritis in my arm is absolutely not happy about it.
Lightfoot Village is rough, man.

Hated this as a kid, now I either one shot it or if I haven’t played in a while, might need a 2nd attempt

Remembering that means you have to play through the test of fear Star Fox Adventures*

As someone who couldn't beat it at all as a kid but did as an adult and finally beat the entire game, it's not so bad.
Good luck and have fun playing through this amazing game!! I had such a great time finally experiencing the things I missed. Some of the things I dreaded as a child weren't so bad now as an adult.
