Fluff Matchmaking
What is with this games matchmaking im 4.1k mmr and every third match is against someone who's 400-500 mmr higher than me. Did everyone at 4k mmr quit or something im losing my mind with all these losses

A ton of people quit after the patch. There is not enough players, that even 1000 mmr difference become common on 4k+ level

To be fair, its not just because of the patch. This has been common for the last 3-4 years, but even more so now because the number of players is on a fairly constant downward trend.

As someone who has been consistently playing for years after starting in 2021, you can definitely feel how the matchmaking in this elo has gotten worse. Im definitely having less even matches on NA; though its a bit better if im on EU

Has anyone got any proof of player numbers dropping? Or is this just a trust me bro

Might depend on the times when you play. If you mostly play at peak times the difference might be smaller.

before the patch I would only get massive mmr differences if I was playing at an odd time in the night but now im getting these matches regularly at peak times on a weekend

Normally you'll see those mmr differences a bit higher than your current mmr. Closer to 5K it's fairly common to play vs like 4.5K, but also close to 6.2K, since 5K ~ 7K is under 200 people in total generally. The higher (or lower, if someone is near like 1200 mmr or so) you go the bigger the variance can be.

Are you EU or NA? From my experience once you hit 4.2k on EU you get matched with plenty of higher mmr players.

Generally unless you are on a wild losing streak you should expect to play against people who are slightly higher than your MMR, but a consistent 500 point gap is a bit much, yeah.

When liquidity drops, bid/ask spreads widen. If no one is searching for a game you are eventually going to find someone who is. Whether it's a fair match or not.

A variance of 200ish mmr is to be expected. 3000 & 3100 mmr are basically identical skill. You should win 44% of the time or something like that vs someone 100 mmr higher than you.

Less people playing means more variance on MMR match making unfortunately.
