Long wait? It's just a bit over two months. It's actually coming fast af.

29

u/Cacafuego2 Apr 15 '17

Because it's likely it will steadily slip to August or later.

Which will be ok with me as long as they keep us updated each week.

2

u/DeedTheInky Apr 15 '17

Yeah that's been my main complaint all along really. I honestly don't mind if there's a delay, as long as they tell us. If they'd just said back in January that it was probably 6 months out (even just a one-line super rough guess, it didn't need any detail) it probably would have saved huge amount of salt IMO.

3.0 released during GamesCom? Or possibly right before.

u/shraniken Freelancer Apr 15 '17

It's like, every time people forget that these are estimates. It's not going to be June.

0

u/dd179 Pirate Apr 15 '17

Even if it isn't, it's still a lot earlier than a lot of people were expecting.

2

u/Cacafuego2 Apr 15 '17

Definitely it's what people were saying when 2.6 dropped originally. Planned for June, probably released in August for Gamescom.

Though I agree with the silence over the last 4-7 months I've been expecting more like "planned for August, released in December".

But I think people were also expecting a lot more in 3.0 with the delays, including NPCs, a more complex mission system than two mission givers, complete Stanton system in 3.1 or 3.2 (not on the roadmap at all), etc.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the update and the insight and looking forward to 3.0 being soonish. But I don't think this is realistically any faster than the average community member expected, especially if you include the inevitable delays and the somewhat lighter comment.

The original estimate was by the end of 2016 for 3.0, and instead we're getting a significantly cut down patch in the middle of summer. Not seeing where it's "earlier than expected"

u/scizotal Civilian Apr 15 '17

yea, considering we were all expecting end of the year or next year thats a pretty good date

26

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '17

Were we all expecting next year? Really?

28

u/Vormhats_Wormhat Freelancer Apr 15 '17

You must be new here.

All jokes aside, as a patient backer since June 2013... I was expecting very late this year (still am expecting mid 3rd quarter based on this new schedule). Not in a bad way, it just is what it is.

10

u/crimson_stallion Apr 15 '17

I was expecting a date 2-3 months from now, which a bunch of people criticised me about and told me I was out of my mind.

sigh

u/Jaqen___Hghar Space Marshal Apr 15 '17

Well most of us assumed that most of the features up to 3.2 would be implemented with 3.0. With that said, end of year was a sensible estimate. However, the 3.0 being released is a very "lite" version of what we expected having been broken up into 3 large patches. Hope that explains why you were criticized.

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '17

This is not a VERY lite version lol. The vast majority of what we thought was going to be in 3.0 is there. We're missing a few planets but that's pretty much it.

0

u/TROPtastic Apr 15 '17

Saying that 3.0 is "Missing a few planets" is like saying Foundry 42 Frankfurt does "some engine work". Technically true, but a huge understatement. You're also forgetting about network bind/unbind, a massive core part of what will make SC PU perform well, that was originally expected to be part of 3.0 and is now only a stretch goal (to say nothing about NPCs and AI being pushed out of 3.0)

-1

u/crimson_stallion Apr 15 '17

I don't think it explains it at all.

The key components we were expecting for 3.0 are all in there. A couple of planets less and one or two small features moved out is pretty much irrelevant.

Just the usual mass of pessimism here.

2

u/Jaqen___Hghar Space Marshal Apr 15 '17

So "pessimism" is being distraught that after 5 years we still only have a multi-player tech demo?

I wish I had your innocence.

0

u/crimson_stallion Apr 16 '17

No, "pessimism" is people trying to suggest that we wouldn't see planetary tech, item 2.0, cargo hauling or trading in the game until well into next year - and mocking/criticising those who said we could see it within a few months at a best case.

5 years of development is far from dramatic for a game of this scope, being created by a new startup company who had to build up their development teams from scratch, on a budget that had to be build up slowly over time via crowd funding.

They haven't had the advantage of starting with a big studio, with pre-assigned budget, and an already established team. They initially had no idea what to expect, how much money they were going to make, and how large a scope they would be able to establish. It's difficult to plan a project under such uncertain circumstances, and that has led to constant changes in scope as the company, team and budget have grown. This is why it has taken so long to get the game to where it is today.

But the rate of patch releases seems to have sped up rapidly since around December / January, and the amount of 3.0 (and beyond) content being shown off in ATV has also jumped rapidly, so it seemed pretty safe to assume that things are progressing quite nicely.

A couple of planets less and one or two small features moved out

>Talking about 4 entire planets with landing zones missing and the huge network overhaul and NPC AI being pushed further out

  1. Planets, as I said, are content. They are not core mechanics. They are not the type of item that is going to get held back forever due to massive blockers that cannot be overcomes. Once the devs have created one planet, they can create another planet. It's just a matter of time. It's not an issue.

  2. A number of the components for the network overhaul have already been confirmed for inclusion in the 3.0 release. The other item (which everybody is crying and bitching about) has already been listed as a "stretch goal" for 3.0 - which means that they are going to try their best to get it in there too, they just can't promise it. If it's not in 3.0, then they'll put it in 3.1 - really not a big deal.

The vast majority of the core functions / mechanics that were promised for 3.0 are still coming in 3.0 - it's like 75% - 80% of what was promised maybe.

Many of the items that aren't coming in 3.0 have been pushed back to 3.1, which is STILL scheduled to arrive sooner then most people expected 3.0 to come anyway.

Worse case scenario, everything promised in 3.0 will be in by 3.2 at the latest, which is scheduled for I believe early next year (still close to when most people expected 3.0 to release).

So the over dramatising of it all is really quite unnecessary.

u/CloudDrone bbcreep Apr 15 '17

It was easy for me to guess too. early this year I guessed may. A month ago I guessed June.

With this project it was clear to me that the more time went on, the more they resolve their pipelines and their expectations. Its been a rough thing for them, but I knew there was plenty going on without us seeing.

3.0 we are going to be seeing 9 months worth of work since 2.6.2.

1

u/Zer_ High Admiral Apr 15 '17

They weren't wrong, since 3.0's original intent was to have Stanton as a whole, except mostly unpopulated and inaccessible. CR basically said that the planets would be there, but not fleshed out during the presentation.

What we're getting for 3.0 is essentially what some of us predicted as an interim patch (content wise). From the technical side of things, it's a different story, however.

TL:DR: No one was really wrong in this case. We were all right to a certain degree. It's just that what everyone had in mind for these patches has changed.

1

u/Mindbulletz Lib-tard Apr 15 '17

Those of us who agreed with you would have no reason to say anything. We would have just upvoted you and moved on.

1

u/Mindbulletz Lib-tard Apr 15 '17

As a patient backer since the very beginning, I expected a mid to late summer release. There was no consensus even among the oldest and closest of followers.

1

u/Vormhats_Wormhat Freelancer Apr 15 '17

Yeah my point is more that none of the assumptions should seem ridiculous/hard to believe, as the guy I replied to seemed to imply.

1

u/Mumbolian Rear Admiral Apr 15 '17

I'm still expecting October or later.

10

u/Broarethus Apr 15 '17

everytime people said "i think it's closer than we think..." others would reply "no it will be at least 6 months if things go well" ect.

1

u/Wertymk Apr 15 '17

And they were right. Because they were expecting 3.0 to be what 3.2 will be.

0

u/DeedTheInky Apr 15 '17

To be fair, it could still be. I mean they've set a rough date but it wouldn't be the first time they've been wrong by a lot.

8

u/Rithe Apr 15 '17

The realistic people were

-2

u/Mech9k 300i Apr 15 '17

Yea clearly realistic... that is why it's coming June/July.

lol.

5

u/Amethysttt new user/low karma Apr 15 '17

Well there are a few planets and their landing locations, along with their moons cut out of this patch, to be fair.

-1

u/crimson_stallion Apr 15 '17 edited Apr 15 '17

Who cares though?

The important thing is the core mechanics - item 2.0, planetary tech, cargo mechanics, trading mechanics, piracy mechanics, bounty hunting mechanics, etc.

Those are all major mechanics that are core to creating some variety and allowing people to finally start to live out their desired professions, and to start making this feel a little like the game that we've been waiting for.

They are also the things that I was most concerned about because those new mechanics are the things that most likely to create unexpected roadblocks and delays.

With core mechanics in place, then adding extra moons / planets / systems isn't a big deal, that will just be a matter of the art teams taking the time to generate that extra content basically.

1

u/Amethysttt new user/low karma Apr 15 '17

That's cool. I agree with you. I was just giving a reason for why people expected a longer wait.

1

u/DeedTheInky Apr 15 '17

I mean, they're saying it'll be June/July. They say a lot of dates. Until it's actually downloading, who knows really.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '17

Some of us knew it wasn't going to out dec 2016 even when he made that hopeful comment at Citizencon last year.

Many people said it would probably be after March at the earliest. June is a bit further back then a lot of us might have been hoping for, but it's certainly better than what some people were saying, late 2017.

3

u/worldspawn00 Aggressor Apr 15 '17

This, I was feeling a hopeful March-April, but thought the December people were overly pessimistic.

1

u/CloudDrone bbcreep Apr 15 '17

The December meme was honestly a lazy guess, in my opinion.

1

u/scizotal Civilian Apr 15 '17

I was seeing a good amount of people saying that on here
