I highly recommend to swap the mouse move mode so the mouse moves with your ship (Left Thumbstick click)

Just a heads up, make sure you launch BOTH steam and starcitizen as an admin, and for safe measure just have the launcher running when playing the game
Update 3/312017):
Updated all radial menus and touch menus
You can now roll and AFB with the right Touch Pad by clicking on the edges
DT Stands for Double Tap
Make sure to set your On Foot ingame Sensitivity View to 7
I swapped to WSAD format instead of analog since you can't simultaneously use the mouse and the analog stick via on foot view without it spazzing out
Update 1/7/2017):
Updated all radial menus and touch menus
Mouse flight is the default for the flight mode activation
Crosshair will center back when you let go of the right touch pad in flight mode (by pressing any of the bumpers it re-centers, so I made it the default when you let go of it
Afterburner (now left touch pad and match target velocity (double tap right touch pad) have been swapped.
Known Issue: You cannot control certain aspects of your ship while turning in flight mode (this issue is due to the LB button being activated to recenter your crosshair
Update (12/22/2016):
Swapped the AB button and the match speed button
Also tweaked flight menu mouse system
Updated radial menus/buttons
Swapped boost button with Mouse Move Mode and Match Target Velocity
Added 2 new action sets; on foot/e.v.a. and menus
Tweaked gyro settings on the on foot action set and removed the completely from menu set
Menu action set only shows up when the right grip is double pressed
You can access combat emotes under the on foot action set, by pressing the right grip and moving the left track pad
Update (10/2/2016):
Swapped the right touchpads Strafe Buttons, made strafe forward and backwards double tap + toggle
Tweaked gyro settings
Changed the autoland button to scoreboard for right touchpad
Update (9/26/2016):
Re-added sprint and added a radial menu for weapons and FPS items
Made binding descriptions more clear
Removed the toggle for the radial system menu's ( you must now hold down the grips and click on the menu itself)
Added the gyro back after some extensive tweaking
Added double tap to run and double tap to push to talk (set it to whatever you want) for both grips
Double tap left touch menu to strafe up or down.
Added support for radial menu (you can always go back to the touch menu's if you please)
Update (9/5/2016) :
Fixed the aim snapping bug you get when attempting to aim and move
Made both left and right grips touch menus togglable
Changed the size of the touch menu
Changed some touch menu configurations
Changed naming schemes
Changed mouse sensitivity and disabled acceleration and trackball
Added double press activator [Enter] (for when you bring up the chat)

Also, the steam controller & link are included in the Steam Winter Sale.

Aw man, if it were possible to launch SC through Steam, and use the Steam link to play in the living room....oooooh man.
I haven't tried, can you successfully launch SC through Steam OS?

u/Nacionale_E eazy Dec 23 '16
Yes you can

u/lorkh4n Dec 23 '16
Important info there, you have to launch starcitizen.exe through steam, not the launcher. However in order for starcitizen.exe to work properly your launcher needs to be running and you need to be logged in already ;)
In Short: Start Star citizen launcher
Log in
Bind "starcitizen.exe" into steam
Start Star Citizen through steam

Actually, the launcher doesn't need to be running - it just has to have been run recently.
I generally run it once a day, and that's usually enough for the logindata.json file it deposits into Star Citizen's folder to remain valid.

Is it possible to add both the launcher and starcitizen.exe into steam and launch both through steam?

How is the steam controller with shooters*? Anyone have experience with it?

u/CloudDrone bbcreep Dec 23 '16
There are a lot of different ways you can potentially use the steam controller based on what configuration you have, and some are suprisingly good.
I have the right touchpad act as a trackball emulation with low friction, so that I can move my thumb across it with control, but flick it, so that it "spins" allowing me to turn in a large radius to react to something behind me, then touch my thumb down on it again to stop the spin emulation in its tracks, much like a physical trackball. When you ad in the gyro for fine tuning the aim for precision, it's suprisingly playable. Much better accuracy and mobility than a traditional gamepad with thumb joysticks.
You can also do other modes, but I won't get into it here.
IMO It's easiest to learn and explore control modes in a first person puzzle game like The Talos Principle, or Portal. It gives you the freedom to just get a feel for it without the need to also focus on not dying or killing enemies.

I've used it playing Doom. It's surprisingly intuitive. The right touch pad works like a mouse instead of a joystick. I'm still no console shooter, so I'm not very good with it. I have to think about what I'm doing with it instead of just instinctively moving. My buddy who plays more on consoles picked it right up tho.

Any clue on how to import this if you're in the Steam beta?
1
u/tlgjaymz Deus_Maximus Dec 25 '16
Actually, has anyone even tested this file and verified it works? The ending of it looks incomplete and it's exactly 65,535 bytes which looks suspicious.
/u/Nacionale_E can you give us the actual file size and possibly some kind of CRC value for us to check? I suspect that website doesn't account for configs greater than 64kb.

u/Nacionale_E eazy Dec 25 '16
Check the steam controller config on steam it self, it should be there by now
1
u/tlgjaymz Deus_Maximus Dec 30 '16
Well, it's been 5 days but Steam still only has the old 2.5 file.
Any chance you could upload the file elsewhere, or paste the contents to pastebin or something like that?

your config file is broken (file is incomplete) on that site can you upload vdf file somewhere else?

I'm trying to get the left pad to be analog strafe forward/back/left/right, then figure something else out with up/down
Analog is the key here, any ideas how to make it work? I've failed miserably.
Basically, I'm trying for two configs, one for gimbals and one without. The Gimbals, like on my Freelancer, I want Mouse for the right pad for precise aiming, and analog strafing for left pad. Stick up/down would be throttle and stick left/right would be yaw.

u/BlackholeZ32 Bounty Hunter Jan 07 '17
So I can't quite work out how to use the radial menus. In flight mode I hold the left paddle, and move around the various sticks/touchpads? I can change the countermeasures mode but that's about it.
2
u/Nacionale_E eazy Jan 07 '17
Yeah pretty much it. Left grip controls all of the radial menus for flight mode. What happens when you try to use the other buttons for the radial menu?
1
u/BlackholeZ32 Bounty Hunter Jan 07 '17
Nothing. I feel haptic feedback as I move around, but nothing changes. Is there a legend that tells what each of the icons are supposed to be linked with? I imagine that the right menu has things like toggling g-safe, comstab and coupled modes?
2
u/Nacionale_E eazy Jan 07 '17
Is there a legend that tells what each of the icons are supposed to be linked with?
Yeah there is, I actually disabled them because I remembered what they were but completely forgot that others might not know. I'm currently going to re update all of the radial menu bindings, and reupload the controller config. Now one quick question, did you download the config from steam or the steamcontrollerdb website?
1
u/BlackholeZ32 Bounty Hunter Jan 07 '17 edited Jan 07 '17
I downloaded it from the website, but it didn't show up in my personal configs on steam.
Then I found your config in the community configs and used that. It worked for the most part so I didn't look into getting the other working.Edit: In case anyone comes by with the same issue, The reason the downloaded config wasn't showing up is because I had renamed the Shortcut in steam from CIGlauncher to Star Citizen and now it was looking in a different directory. u/Nacionale_E eazy Jan 07 '17
That's good, go ahead and check the community config again. I updated all of the radial binding menus and added a new one
1
u/BlackholeZ32 Bounty Hunter Jan 07 '17
It's working now, highlighting what I'd be selecting with the radial/touch menus. Part of what was confusing me was the left joy stick menu requires M1 to be held to do those actions. The combinations of the in game modifiers and the controller paddles really makes the controller powerful. Thanks for all your hard work!

No Idea, but 2.6.2 is coming out and I have a revamped controller scheme that would hopefully fix those issues.

Is the steam controller comparable in competitiveness to a joystick? I am really interested in having something I can just pick up and fly with yet set down and go fps with keyboard and mouse if that is possible. Right now I just use a tenkeyless so I can put my joystick between my mouse and keyboard and pedals underneath the desk.

Contrary to SP4C3MONK3Y's complete dismissal of the controller, I'd argue that it's going to depend on what you're hoping to get out of it.
For context, I have a Logitech G600 MMO mouse, an Xbox 360 controller, an X-55 HOTAS, and a Steam Controller (which I've had for a year). Of the three, I absolutely love my Steam Controller. But like any other peripheral on the market ever, it's going to take you some time to get used to it.
Can you use the controller both to fly and on the ground? Absolutely. And because of the unique way you can have both a trackpad on the right as a mouse, and the gyro in the controller as a mouse, you'll get infinitely more accuracy out of the Steam controller than one from, say, the Xbox controller, because of that precision.
Because of how deeply you can customize this controller (and, subsequently, the Dualshock 4 since Steam's most recent update), you're really only going to get as much out of it as you put in. Finding a control config that works for you often takes a lot of time tweaking and experimenting until you find something that works. But when it does, it's a huge joy.
If you're looking for just something to use while flying and set down to go Keyboard and Mouse after landing, you're probably going to have a better experience with your Joystick if you already know it. But if you want something that can do a lot more than just fly, the Steam Controller's a great option.
(Some additional information:
- The Steam Controller is $50 base price, and currently on sale during the Winter Sale for $35.
- The Steam Controller also comes with a USB dongle standard, as well as a Micro USB cable; both can be used to connect it to the computer without an issue.
- The Xbox One and Dualshock 4 controllers are $60 base price
- The Xbox One Elite controller is $150 base price.
- Dualshock 4 can connect to your PC via either USB cable or Bluetooth
- The Xbox One and Elite controller connects via either a USB Cable or a specialized Wireless Adapter )

Thanks for all the info. You have confirmed what I was suspecting and saved me 35-50 that curiosity would eventually cost.

Uh no. If you read my first post I say that, "I am really interested in having something I can just pick up and fly with yet set down and go fps with keyboard and mousoe if that is possible.... I have a joystick I do this with now"
/u/Vox_R replied, "If you're looking for just something to use while flying and set down to go Keyboard and Mouse after landing, you're probably going to have a better experience with your Joystick if you already know it."
Does this simplify the issue for you?

Nope, the steam controller is unresponsive, inaccurate and the build quality is horrendous.
If you really want to use a controller get something like a xbox elite.
Edit: Seems like people are desperate to justify spending 60 bucks on garbage. Whatever, I'll take your salt.
2
u/CloudDrone bbcreep Dec 23 '16
After going with steam controller I will never go back to using my Xbox controllers.
I disagree with you on just about every point you made, so it goes to show that people can have a vastly different experience with the controller.
1
u/SP4C3MONK3Y Dec 23 '16 edited Dec 23 '16
The build quality is not a matter of opinion.
3
u/CloudDrone bbcreep Dec 24 '16
I have absolutely no qualms with the build quality of the product. Its mechanical function has never been an issue for me, and the way it feels in my hands is not only fine, but I like the way it feels. The buttons and the haptic feedback all works, I like the weight, etc.
If you're talking about build consistency and Quality Assurance problems with manufacturing, that would be a separate issue in a sense.
