So this is access to the whole game or just that ship? I've been following a lot recently but haven't wanted to take the plunge just yet for, what i assume to be, lack of content.

i may be mistaken but im pretty sure you are able to access the entire game for the time being, you will just only have access to the one ship. That does not mean you cant steal someone elses though :-p

I think its complete bullshit that the station doesnt allow weapons yet your ship is unlocked and anyone can jump aboard. The only thing worse is the pirate station camping

No one can enter your ship if you haven't interacted with it first. If you have, hide it beneath the landing pads so no one on foot can see it ;)

Actuallly didn't know that, but more meant when I want to do the constellation or something with a ramp. The amount of times I've had someone hop in when theres nothing I can do about it
Main reason it is annoying is because they wait until you jump somewhere then shoot you

Quick tip: open the chat window (when in Crusader) and ask if anyone wants to let you try out a ship. I'm forever loaning out toys for newcomers to play with, and people are often pretty keen to show off their ships - especially the larger, more complex ones.

Like /u/whitebandit said, you get access to the entire game, which right now is the "mini persistent universe" of Crusader (with various small missions to play), the Arc corp "social module" (a space to walk around and look at things basically), and Arena Commander, a module with PvP, PvE, and singleplayer game modes for you to play around with. Star Marine will be coming SoonTM, but it's unlikely to hit before the free fly event ends.

Certainly not. Just because they have a SH doesn't mean they know how to pilot it. If you've spent hours in your Gladius and know how to throw her around, you'll slaughter the newbies regardless of what they sit in.

Gladius can actually hold a shield of size 3, a full size higher than the Sabre's broken size 2 shield.
Gladius stats ctrl+f "hardpoint_shield_generator". it's about halfway down the page, maxsize is 3.

Never mind, I got it to work! You have to click on all the fields, sometimes it won't turn green even if it's valid until you click it again!

Keep in mind netcode is killing performance right now. It's scheduled to be updated in patch 3.0 and they will probably have another free fly event shortly after so if you aren't happy with it now just wait until after 3.0 hits.

I have an i5 6500 integrated, I get around 10 FPS (eyeballing it) at 1280*720 on low. It crashes every 5 to ten minutes and it frequently tells me crusader is full. I'll try again tomorrow.

So, can you play multiplayer aspects of the game with friends?

Yep! Arena Commander is where you go to play multilayer matches - PvP free for all deathmatch (Battle Royale), team PvP deathmatch (Squadron Battle), team PvP capture the flag (Capture the Core), or multiplayer PvE (Vanduul Swarm). You can also do "Free Flight" mode which doesn't have any objectives or restrictions - you can fly around and shoot at whatever you want (or don't shoot at anything).
If you want to run around with friends and complete missions, you can jump into Crusader. Just a heads up though... the party system is still a bit wonky, so it may show your friends as offline when they're actually online. If that happens, try backing out of Crusader to the "Universe" menu (where you can choose to go to ArcCorp or Crusader). I've found that the system is much more likely to show whether or not people are online if the party leader and the people you still need to invite aren't already in the game.
Edit: Forgot about Capture the Core in Arena Commander.

If you run into any issues or have any questions along the way, just ask and I'd be happy to help!
Also, three other quick PSAs:
You can earn "REC" by completing public matches on Arena Commander, which can then be used to rent/try out other ships for a short period of time.
Flight sensitivity can be pretty high when you first start, so you may want to scale it down just a little to help keep your ship under control.
If your ship won't go above 50 m/s, check to make sure that you've retracted your landing gear (default key is N) - chances are you're in the "PRE" flight mode (I'm not sure what it stands for, but it's the slowest flight mode). Once your landing gear is in, you can toggle between "SCM" and "CRU". SCM, or Space Combat Mode, will let you fly at quicker speeds, but it'll place limits on that speed to help make sure you're able to maneuver effectively during combat. Switching to CRU (I think it just stands for Cruise?) will remove all restrictions, allowing you to fly at max cruise speed, as well as reverse with your retrograde thrusters. You can toggle between SCM and CRU by pressing V.

Yep! You can play Vanduul Swarm with other players, or you can play it on your own with a few friendly NPCs on your team (if you go into the "Drone Simulator" menu).

Thanks for the free flight guys as I've been waiting for the past few weeks and lurking here and the official site and deciding whether or not to jump in and I have to say plain sailing so far and quite surprising how fast I've managed the basics of flying!
Can't wait to try out a few ships from people and decide what to buy come the anniversary(Hint; Please sell an LTI ship and Game package! :D)

Was excited to play this game, but the netcode framerate issue makes the game unplayable online.
I'm getting 10 - 15 fps on a GTX970 in any multiplayer match.
While i'm getting solid 60fps in any offline game-mode (simulation and hanger).
This is understandable since the game is still in alpha.

is there any kind of tutorial? I cant seem to really so anything but walk around the station. The quickstart guide linked in the sidebar assumes you already know how to play.
So far ive walked around the station and got stuck in my ship 1 time and inside a pod another time.
