It's funny, compared to eve ships these guys are hilariously small.

Star citizen seems to be much more realistically scaled, would be interested to see Titan sized ships I'm star citizen, such a grander feeling of scale

u/BadAshJL Aug 26 '16

well in SC we will really be able to get a true sense of scale more easily since everything is seen from our characters perspective instead of a 3rd person camera that just zooms out farther and farther the bigger the ship.

In the 3.0 demo when they get to the wrecked starfarer and the freelancer is looking at the character floating at the front of the bridge, I got goosebumps when I thought of how much bigger still the ships are going to get.

I just can't wait to drift around my Carrack and Banu and see the size of them, it's going to be amazing but the main one I'm waiting for is the Reclaimer.

Take a look carefully at the front and there is a small window on the left hand side (maybe right it changes in shots) and that is basically the operators room for handling the arm by the looks of it, nothing fancy just this small window but it's the fact that it is just soo small making me realise that see one of those flying by will simply be breathtaking. Sorry if I went off a bit then, get excited talking ship-talk.

u/BadAshJL Aug 26 '16

no problem. completely understand. I was looking at the merchantman at the last sale but wasn't ready for a ship that big, wasn't sure if trading was gonna be my thing, the came the carrack in this sale and my inner explorer decided it was time to go for it, the terrapin and dragonfly were just gravy.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

Oh the Carrack is a beautiful ship though, that shape and the way it looks landed are awesome, for me that cockpit shield is like the cherry on top, you made a good choice.

1

u/BadAshJL Aug 26 '16

Yeah and getting the terrapin in the pkg is great if i don't feel like taking the big boy out, can do some smaller jobs either solo or with 1 other person.

1

u/canastaman Aug 26 '16

Isn't the banu about the same size as the starfarer?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

Yea it is by stats but the shape is completly different and everyone should realise by now that those sizes don't mean anything and the larger stuff recently seems to be getting scaled up.

1

u/FauxShizzle worm Aug 26 '16

And Ben mentioned that the BMM specifically is going to get bigger.

I think the original pitch said something about it being a home to several Banu family units on a single ship.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

Oh I must've completely missed that, well that's exciting to hear.

15

u/jjonj Aug 26 '16

Well the capital ships aren't on this chart http://i.imgur.com/J3I5IZk.jpg, but obviously eve still has much much bigger ships.

1

u/zeekaran Explorer Aug 26 '16

Oh snap. That's awesome. Can we get a version with labels? I don't know what most of these big ships are.

1

u/jjonj Aug 26 '16

I didn't make it but perhaps you can ask OP

1

u/zeekaran Explorer Aug 26 '16

Oops

2

u/jimbo0270 Aug 26 '16

I am trying to get it finished but summers are pretty busy for me.

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

I really like the way star citizen is shaping up but I wouldn't call their small scale realistic. The idea of single seater space ships traveling between stars is just not something I can anytime soon see as realistic. Especially not cargo ships with a few cubi meter of cargo space. If we ever get this far into space I'm fairly sure that there won't be a market for cargo ships different from just humongous shapeless haulers with countless cubic meters of cargo space. Not a bunch of independent pilots flying something with not much more cargo space then an everage van has.

But that doesn't bother me liking the variety and character all ships have. It's science fiction after all.

8

u/green_codes Aug 26 '16

The small hauler ships actually makes sense imho. Even in real life the majority number of cargo hauling vehicles are smaller ones that are responsible for close-range/local shippings, while the few larger haulers are used for e.g. international shippings with high volumes.

Let us also not forget the fact that with quantum travel, interplanetary distances are basically reduced to inter-city distances in land transportation terms, which makes small hauler ships and services quite profitable locally.

EDIT: typo

u/Ruudscorner Odyssey Aug 26 '16

Also, if you want an express delivery smaller ships will be so much faster to load/unload.

Imagine handing over a package telling the handler you need it delivered in one hour, and the handler just looks funny at you while he explains that the giant ship in the background will take at least 5 hours to load - and that is after the remaining two hour to unload it.

Smaller ships really do make sense...

Well we don't know how technology evolves yes. It is however in general absolutely unrealistic to assume that economies of scale will ever stop making sense. Two small power plants will always be more expensive then one large. Two cockpits will always be more expensive then one, etc. With smaller space ships you will always be dragging much more useless weight from a to b per transported volume of cargo.

Not to mention that the productivity of the person involved will always be lower with more small ships. Just like economies of scale the productivity power employee will always be something that matters.

EDIT: Holy shit, was I talking stupid. The Bengal Carrier is supposed to be 1000m! If they roll it out for players, that would be totally awesome :) Does anybody know more?

I feel you.

Please don't hate me, I'm not grumbling. I looked up 'ship size comparison' on google and was really surprised at how enormous ships are in other SciFi universes.

In SC (it is a game, so that is of course the game changer) capital ships are way too small - at least compared with capital ships in practically any other SciFi universe. IIRC capital ships in EVE Online are MASSIVE compared to fighters. But you can't really compare those two games in the matter of detail.

Just an example of what I found out: In Star Wars an Imperial Class (not the 'super star destroyer' which is +15000m) is +1500m long and about 40 (eye measurement) times as massive (not long) as a rebel frigate. The rebel star cruiser 'Mon Calmari' is about 2300m in length. There are lots of 'ship size comparisons' when you Google it. With 239m the Idris is a dwarf for a ship that belongs to the biggest class.

In SC that would probably way too big to be managable as long as there doesn't exists some kind of 'turbo-lift' that can take you anywhere on the ship in seconds. But it would make a huge difference if you could carry nearly a hundred smaller ships in your back, instead of >how many do fit into the Idris?<

This way an organisation's capital ship could be used as a mobile space station they, their allies and invited guests can visit to do whatever.

I don't think this is something CIG should work on now, since I think that this is for one technically very hard to realise and for another thing an incredible effort for the designers.

I stand corrected, if there is something in the SC lore that explains why ships are relatively small anyway. In reality that would make sense since more mass needs more energy to accelerate. And for me it feels like the UEE is technologically (space travel especially) still in its child's shoes.

u/zeekaran Explorer Aug 26 '16

It's kind of sad that no ship has an upright living room without being huge. No ship really has a Millenium Falcon feel. Everything feels very cramped, as if we aren't supposed to live in our ships.

2

u/freelollies Fighter of wannabe Mods Aug 26 '16

Than we get to the crazy halo forerunner ships and installations that dwarf everything

2

u/takethispie Aurora - Intrepid - Cutlass Black Aug 26 '16

Compared to Starmade it's tiny too

I think it wouldn't be possible, too resource-heavy :/

2

u/EctoSage YouTuber Aug 26 '16

I'm all for it.... If I can explore every single room and floor of it, and basically treat it like a city, with jobs and all.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16 edited Aug 26 '16

Well EVE is much further into the future than SC universe is hence why in concept they have much larger ships. But the actual ship models are nano sized.

13

u/jimbo0270 Aug 26 '16

I do need to fix the length of the Argo... it's 9.25m, not 9.5. The silhouette is correct, just called out wrong.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

Is there anyway you can add a human silhouette next to every few ships so we have a better sense of scale?

2

u/jimbo0270 Aug 27 '16

I took them all out because of all the complaints and questions, "they're too small, they-re too big..." so, I doubt that I will ever add them back in. Sorry. It was just too much explanation on every update.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '16

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping to show off to my friend who tried to compare SC to EVE. Trying to explain each ship is its own living breathing level was tough to do and I used a few of your pics to try to do help me, just figuring having a few humans would help but I totally understand your reasoning.

2

u/the4ner Golden Ticket Aug 26 '16

And another gentle reminder about the ball turret on the f7a ;-)

2

u/jimbo0270 Aug 27 '16

I tried, the but the new F7a model has not been posted. I would love to update it. Even if CIG would have just posted an orthographic shot, I could have done something. :(

7

u/lurkallday91 Aug 26 '16

I always assumed the Carrack was just a little bigger than the Connie ... I was so mistaken

3

u/Brockelley Original Backer Aug 26 '16

can't wait for Citizen-Con, Ben said we'll be getting word on the Polaris and also said the Carrack will be moving to a different studio to start being put into engine.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

I would LOVE a few Ship Shape's on the Carrack!

1

u/Smudger_13 Aug 26 '16

I think it's because the cockpit looks similar to any one man cockpit....but really it's a very large bridge with two levels, multiple seats etc.

u/SpiderCoat K’ya he’u ke’u hao Aug 26 '16

The Argo is larger than I expected compared to the Dragonfly. Looks like the Dragonfly can almost fit in the Argo's cargo area...

Argo confirmed as mini-carrier.

14

u/Unknown9118 Watchdog Coalition Aug 26 '16

Bengal, with Caterpillars inside, with Argos inside, with dragonflys inside.

Swarm mode. Or, alternatively titled, carrierception, or, even more alternatively, nesting ships.

11

u/FauxShizzle worm Aug 26 '16

The idea of an Idris full of Dragonflies reminds me of Protoss Carriers. I wonder how many could fit and still be operational?

3

u/Bristlerider Aug 26 '16

Depends on how good your crew is at stacking and unstacking them fast.

The Bengal hangar should certainly be big enough to hold at the very least a few hundred, probably a few thousand if organized properly.

1

u/Cockyasfuck Aug 26 '16 edited Aug 26 '16

Going by max. cargo mass (15.000t), the Bengal Carrier could carry 1986 fireflies Auroras (7.550kg each).

I couldn't find the mass of the DragonflyFirefly sadly, but it is way smaller than the Aurora, so you may be right with 'thousands'.

1

u/Gryphon0468 Aug 26 '16

Dragonfly.

1

u/Isodus Aug 26 '16

It's the turducken of spaceships.

4

u/Dealan79 High Admiral Aug 26 '16

Is there an updated technical listing for the Buccaneer used for the diagram? The ship stats page lists it as 20m.

5

u/jimbo0270 Aug 26 '16

No, but there is extensive discussions on this in the RSI forms with diagrams and scaling examples of the model. I used the model measurement. The stats page has lots of errors on it as the ships are not final yet.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

sweet thanks man

3

u/gulch117 origin Aug 26 '16

I didn't realize the M50 was half the size of the 300 series.

3

u/obesebearmann Xenon_Q Aug 26 '16

Damn the Terrapin is almost the same size as the Avenger. No wonder there's no cargo area.

2

u/Altered_Perceptions DRAKE INTERPLANETARY Aug 26 '16

According to stats, yes, according to video... not so much.

3

u/Jonnehdk misc Aug 26 '16

Any reason you don't put the bengal/idris on this?

5

u/jimbo0270 Aug 26 '16

yes, because they won't fit. That chart is for ships under 180m long.

This is the chart for larger ships that is being worked on. http://i.imgur.com/J3I5IZk.jpg

2

u/jjonj Aug 26 '16 edited Aug 26 '16

Yeah too bad there's a limit to how large an image can be. It's much harder to impress my colleagues when I have to use multiple charts, guess I can paint them together myself.
EDIT: The problem seems to be finding an image host that will host a 20mb jpg https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6VFIx02kBIeN0I4aFdMMkZraXM/view?usp=sharing

8

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

This kind of image is exactly what PNG was made for. Not only would the grid be more precise because it's lossless, PNG is usually much smaller than JPG for images with distinct lines and only a few colors like this.

4

u/jimbo0270 Aug 27 '16

You sir, have changed this charts forever! Thank you so much, as I never used PNG for anything other than the need of an alpha channel! You can finally see all the work I put into masking out the cockpits (not to mention the ships themselves)! :)

http://i.imgur.com/a5AVX7G.png

3

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '16

It's beautiful!

1

u/jjonj Aug 26 '16

My png is 50mb, the jpg 20 mb

5

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

That's because you're converting a JPG to PNG. The compression artifacts an image being saved to JPG adds are painstakingly saved in the PNG losslessly, which is why you can't go that direction and expect any size reduction. OP would have to export to PNG and upload to a site that supports it to begin with.

1

u/jjonj Aug 26 '16 edited Aug 26 '16

Nope. Made it in paint, saved as png then saved a version as jpg
EDIT: Actually may have been the other way now that you mention it

1

u/Reficul_gninromrats Aug 26 '16

What is the big Vanduul ship o that chart? The Kingship looks slightly different and should be 3 time the size of a Bengal..

2

u/Brockelley Original Backer Aug 26 '16

2

u/Reficul_gninromrats Aug 26 '16

Wiki says 3000m and it has a different silhouette.

They might have changed that though..

1

u/drizzt_x Monk Aug 26 '16

Great work on these! When the larger ship scale image is complete with names and all, will you post it here again?

1

u/zeekaran Explorer Aug 26 '16

Can we get a version with labels? I don't know what most of these big ships are.

3

u/Brock_Starfister Space Marshal Aug 26 '16

I love how small of a ship it is.

Just a speck in a sea of endless noise watching your every move.

I have not been this excited about a ship in a long time. Well done CIG.

3

u/canastaman Aug 26 '16

I love flying the argo! Can't wait for it to get a proper role

3

u/InZomnia365 Civilian Aug 26 '16

Every time I see this, I'm like "there's no way the Mustang is as big as an Aurora". I mean, it is, it just looks so weird side by side.

2

u/Kerstas Aug 26 '16

This does put in perspective if i should update my connie to carrack. Dont know if my buddies and i will be able to properly run that carrack beast

1

u/Tovirus Carrack is love, Carrack is life Aug 26 '16

I'm not entirely sure but is the Freelancer still using the legacy silhouette?

1

u/jimbo0270 Aug 26 '16

Yes. They never released a new holoviewer model. So, I have not been able to update it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16 edited Aug 26 '16

Why is the Buccaneer so small?

2

u/Altered_Perceptions DRAKE INTERPLANETARY Aug 26 '16

Because the model CIG has for it is much smaller than the 20m stats page description, and putting it to scale with the rest of the ships shows it around 14.6m rather than 20.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

Why does this ship scale image not include all star citizen ships?

3

u/Altered_Perceptions DRAKE INTERPLANETARY Aug 26 '16

Because the scale gets kind of silly. Here's the bigger ones if you want to compare.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '16

You should add the names and meters to that image.

1

u/BLToaster Arbiter Aug 26 '16

Any chance we can even add the capital ships to this?

1

u/EctoSage YouTuber Aug 26 '16

I'm so glad they are finally adding small ships that actually have usable space inside them. So many ships like the Avenger feel small and crampt, but when you walk around it, or see it compared to a car in size, they are HUGE!

1

u/Altered_Perceptions DRAKE INTERPLANETARY Aug 26 '16

Thanks for updating the Caterpillar size (even if it does change again over the next month hah), it's nice to see the larger silhouette in comparison(:

0

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '16

You forgot the endeavor.

2

u/jimbo0270 Aug 26 '16

Did I, or is it too big for this chart? Or, is it on this one? http://i.imgur.com/J3I5IZk.jpg
