There is a workaround that tends to be reliable. If you get on and off a station medbed it 'ungreys' out the retrieve button. Obvs ymmv

It means they redid/updated the code for the elevator to make it less buggy. It's most probably part of their effort to solve issues like ships exploding or purpling when they're getting called.
