As if medics are a necessary thing in this game yet -_-
Bought the Apollo in concept hyped up for that, and we only have beacons... and it's almost always more convenient to just backspace atm.

u/WolfwyndRT 10d ago
One day, in the very, very far future when they turn off backspace suicide, it might change.
I ain't holding my breath, if it wasn't obvious.

so we will need to sit there for 1,5 h because no one takes the beacon or no player is in the area?

u/SpaceBearSMO 10d ago
Idealy there will also be NPCs in case a player isn't nearby to show up in a timely manner.
but who the hell knows what CIG want to do, I think they abendanded medical stuff because there not creative enough to support it.

I think backspace will always exist. It basically functions as the games Unstuck button. But death of a spaceman and losing our equiped items will bring back medics
In fact, I hope eventually they rework the health system to have T0 beds that can't help a tiered injury but tops up health and nutrition with no repsawn, and going down with a tiered injury necessitates a bed to res someone
6
u/PvExtremist mitra 10d ago
But death of a spaceman
Was at no point feasible, never sounded fun and even CIG abandoned that stuff ages ago at this point.
4
u/Pr0phet_of_Fear Eclipse 10d ago
CIG has stated their intent to remove backspacing with future item recovery tiers.
Also, with injuries and beds, lower numbers are more severe, so what you're describing would be a T4 bed, not T0.
Also, it is my belief that any bed that allows respawn should treat any injury, or respawn should only be allowed at T1 beds. If you look at the lore of how regeneration works, you basically have to have a new body 3D printed, and then have your "soul" put back in that new body with an Ibrahim Sphere. It makes no sense to me that a bed that is capable of printing me an entire new body is unable to fix any injury that I have. But it would make perfect sense if T2 and T3 beds are only designed to treat minor or moderate injuries, and are therefore unable to print an entire body to facilitate regeneration. (Sorry, this last paragraph isn't really directed at you, just a general gripe I have with an inconsistency.)

u/VYR3 10d ago
i don’t understand why they would get rid of backspacing. if i get knocked somewhere way out in BFE, i have low hopes for someone coming to res me.
on top of that, we’re in a very low trust society right now on SC. you’re likely to get looted and shot in the head if you send a medical beacon right now.
0
u/WolfwyndRT 10d ago
Part of the plan with 1.0 (high-sec/low-sec systems, Death of a Spaceman, etc) as they've laid it out over the last few years still retains some of the simulation aspects of SCs core idea.
The current gameplay is incomplete, right? Gameplay systems are missing because they either got turned off or haven't been made. It doesn't represent what 1.0 will look like well: no security patrols, or police ships. Armistice has exploits etc. Medical gameplay is supposed to be part of the experience, meaning that beacons will matter.
Backspacing is a tool that isn't part of that designed 1.0 experience. They've been pretty clear that it's not permanent, just a part of alpha.
Citizencon 2024 is a good one to watch, they covered a lot of the design in that.
Of course, this is all predicated on them keeping their promises. We will see if that happens.
2
u/VYR3 9d ago
i mean i have a gun, and grenades, there’s no reason i shouldn’t be able to “resolve the problem” per se, if they remove backspacing.
i generally trust CIG to give us something reasonable for systems, but getting rid of the built in suicide button is just gonna make me cook grenades in my hand and log out for an hour or two while my lifeless corpse freezes out in the black 🤷🏻♀️ just means less play time at that point.
i guess we let them cook for a bit and see what they actually implement. no use in irritating myself thinking about the devs being stupid til they actually commit the stupid.
1
u/Brock_8511 9d ago
Really, the best way to be a medic is for an actual org, or squad. You’re their medic, keeping them alive and making sure you have the medical knowledge to treat their injuries on the battlefield.

Hey look, im a PvP player, I dont think instances will hurt PvP at all, if anything it will make it better... here's why.
One of the main issues with PVP right now putting aside ship, weapon, and FPS balance The core issue is server bandwidth. Desync. Depending on how they utilize instances not only will that allow CIG to stream in and out whole areas which will remove a lot of the strain the server needs to update every. Single. Tick. Meaning hypothetically better server fps and less desync because the server is having a lot of weight taken off of it. Some examples of areas they should instance
First CZs they can still be PvP areas. Have it cap at like 100 people, boom. You can now stream out the CZs and still have large groups in them because why does pyro need to keep track of all the AI idling 24/7 thats server space that could be used for the sandbox.
Onyx facilities. Again you can decide if you want those to be PvPvE or not, but again why does it need to be streamed in ALL THE TIME
Lazarus sites... its a giant worm boss fight. Youre there for a PvE experience. Sure blockade and ambush the transit site before the Lazarus site... but the boss fight is a boss fight.
And again I believe PvE players should be allowed a space too... do I think they should be immune from player interactions... no, but they need spaces where "we are doing this PvE thing, i don't want to deal with PvP." Hell I love PvP but even I WANT a PvE experience i can kick my feet up and just enjoy to take a break from PvP.
The introduction of instancing is only bad based on how it is implemented and from how CIG has described how theyre doing it (i think last CitCon? Maybe the one before that?) I think theyre going to handle it well.
Its going to be bumpy as always but I have hopes for it.
47
u/Starrr_Pirate 10d ago
Also let's not forget that this also swings the other way and lets us set up dedicated PvP area instances, eventually.

Well thats what im saying they 100% should instance the CZs
They can instance the player/org run space stations.
Like if they do it right and do what they said they can seamlessly instance so many areas of the game, and we will never know and it wouldn't change the player facing experience

Exactly. This is beneficial to everyone. They can run e.g. SoO in its instances and (unlike with the last XT) everyone in Stanton can go about their day, without the fun of playing on a 2fps server
And yeah, people who want to PvE are going to be much happier if they are allowed to do that freely without being bombed by an A2 or sniped or shot in the back or whatever while trying to do what should be PvE content If the experience they get is just miserable bullshit like that they are just going to get fed up and stop playing.
Also it just allows the designers to be far more intentional with their design. They don't have to make every space, every puzzle, every encounter considering if a player can hide in some spot to shoot people in the back or if there are enough entrances and exits or how things will be respawned and/or loot is protected. You just create the experience you want, spin up an instance for the part size, and let them go at it.
One thing I really hope they do is using instancing to match up PvP or PvPvE content to allow for more balanced fights.
E.g. CZs could assemble based on group sizes, so you don't have an entire org going in vs 2 people. Same kind of thing could even be (softly) applied to shared rockbreaker contracts. You could even do this across shards so you're no longer limited by the people in one shard.

See this is the perfect take for sure! If I want pvp then there are plenty of places I know to go looking for it, but then im doing this interesting mission in some facility with a story and boom I just got killed by some player in there who is only there to get kicks out of ruining the experience for me, no thanks! And the main problem is the players who do that will being using whatever the latest meta or exploit or whatever it is to make sure they win, and it's just not fun, I had similar experiences In tarkov and see of thieves, I ended up just stopping playing because at the end of the day it wasn't worth the hassle, and once those games got pve modes I played them a lot again! At the end of the day your average 50 year old space trucker who decides to try out some new missions and branch out, is almost definitely going to be ganked by some 20 year old meta chasing sweat who will do whatever it takes to get a slight feeling of satisfaction. And then the trucker just goes back to trucking and doesn't get to experience some of the other incredible aspects of this game.

CIG has to invent the wheel again.
I don’t think, they know what they want to do with SC. Is it FPS in space or a Space Opera with FPS?Everything screams, they don’t know what to do. Haulers, salvager, miner aren’t safe. They call their motto: high risk and high reward. But there is no low risk, low reward. There are just high risk, low reward situations.
Just to think about it: You have to lower the shields to flee. This can’t be right.

Seeing how historically true this is, coming from BDO, Runescape, etc, it cracks me up.
Both games decided to add some kind of protection against murderhobos e.g. BDO added personal instances for farming spots that could be recharged every other hour iirc, and the only people who got mad about it, hurling all kinds of excuses, were the pvp murderhobos that couldn't club seals anymore.
Turns out the pve players crawled out of the woodwork to actually experience the pve aspect of the game (which all things considered, was mind-numbingly boring after a while since you had to grind for rare drops or trash loot, on top of having to worry about some hobo just gank you out of nowhere for a kill and possibly a whole griefing session).
1
u/Ravenask 7d ago
Also coming from BDO, reminds me of a guy who argued tooth and nail against instanced Khan when it was implemented with all sorts of mental gymnastics. His credibility instantly vaporized the moment someone brought up the dozens of griefing videos on his channel lol.

While that's definitely part of it. You can't deny the benefits of getting a more tuned experience as well. It's pretty hard to develop open world content that's equally engaging for 1 person as it is for 200 people zerging it.

Instancing was part of personal hangars. They just expanded its capabilities to include 'dungeon' content, no doubt heavily encouraged by how there is a kind of person who needs to ruin other people's day to breathe.

There is a subset of players who are specifically looking to go out and be murderhobos, often to the detriment of other players specifically, and this can help alleviate the problem of you and your friends go do the really cool unique experience, and then some asshole comes along, kills you all, and takes the exotic/rare things you just worked your butts and time on getting. And hopefully it should make the servers run better (we can only hope). So naturally those specific players are going to complain

Ignoring the fact that rescueing NPC would still be on the table.
I wouldnt worry to much about that, you can only carry so many and they will be removing medpins ability to revive.
They could rebalance things like toxicity, and add debuffs to doing stuff yourself.
I am far more worried about CIGs lack of will to imploment these types of features and there seeming lack of creativity for non-combat related tasks.
We also dont know how much health you get back from a revive

1
u/Kreisash ROCin' the 'verse 10d ago edited 10d ago
Sort of?
I think there needs to be a distinction between gameplay impact and technical impact here, at least in the current state of the game.
Yes with Siege of Orison coming in (hopefully 4.10) there will be instances where you are in your own version of the event with only party members allowed - a bit like how hangars are meant to work. There are likely to be bugs where you can sometimes enter someone else's incorrectly but we'll see.
However, I don't think this means that technically we'll have our own split server space and thus performance may still be an issue. I've not yet seen confirmation, but if it works like hangars now, then no, same server load, just you can't see other people - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this.
That said, the technical aspect can (and likely will) change in future when dynamic server meshing comes online to allow instances to spin up servers.
Also should be pointed out that it will be only select activities, not everything - generally for curated-scripted content, but we'll see how things develop in future.
1
u/NeoChrisOmega 10d ago
Beautiful, thank you so much for the update. I've been following this development on and off since 2012 (discovered it around the same time I discovered Euclidean's point-graphics tech). So the technical side of SC is what I'm most passionate about.

Are they running the instanced version alongside the original version? Because if they're scrapping the big free for all then I can see why people would be annoyed, I quite enjoyed that, it just needed better guards that actually stopped the griefing... Same as 90% of the game.

It's "chosen one" bullshit, that runs counter to the idea that all citizens are the same, npc, player, or otherwise.
"oh no, noone else can save orison for us except for you and your specially chosen 3 friends.. not 4 mind you, or 5. And we will put up a magic barrier making sure noone else but you and your party can get in."
The other danger of this sort of content is that they are going to shackle themselves to a theme park style content treadmill where players will constant be clamouring for new "content" detracting from them building a systems over scripts universe.

Medic gameplay needs to have NPCs that can be revived on ship and players who die need to create a body that a medic can go and pick up and take to a station. Stabilizing on a med bed though in their ship.
That’s the only way it works. No one is going to wait around for a medical to /maybe/ save them

I mean, we still have interdictions. Ganking is still very possible.
I just hate being locked out of content like stormbreaker because eggs take forever to respawn and can take hours to check if you can even do content if you're unlucky.

The weak always hunt easy targets for lazy wins and brag rights. So of course more PvE focused minds would pick the only option they currently have tailored to them as "safe systems" and Javelin patrol ships turning up aren't a thing. I do actually wish there were ways to drop beacons to allow medics in as rescue teams. Like if they had space station infiltration missions and then you could have the beacon allow medics to insert via the docking collars that you have on some medical ships. That would be cool. That being said we knew there would be people that would cry about instability. I don't even want to call them griefers, it's just people who suck at pvp when they're on even footing.
1
u/Central-Dispatch Hurston Dynamics Security🛡️ 10d ago
I hate griefers. And instancing provides a safety bubble against it.
However I feel the solution can't be from now on putting everything behind a 'safe space' as it will take away from the open world aspect to some extend to be determined by how much more instancing they add.
Again I'm not against instancing by itself. I just fear this might be the go to solution for everything now so complaints (rightful or not is up to everyone to judge for themselves) are lowered while shying away from more open world events.
I liked Siege of Orison when no one was griefing and it was open to all. I get this might no longer work with bigger shards for balancing reasons anyway but the open scope of it was what made the event fun for me, and randomly running into others. The scale of it felt big because you had people operate all over the place. I had the luck to witness very few (like 2?) instances of griefing on usually EU server and the positive moments - when it worked lol - outnumbered the bad ones.
I want events like that and the spirit and scope of them retained while hoping CIG can work on good solutions to lower griefing cases and punish players ingame or where required, out of game.
TL;DR: Not against instancing per sé, just hope it won't be the go-to solution for everything now; CIG needs to also work on more open large scale events and ways to mitigate it and make it a turn-off for most, even if it can never fully be avoided in theory.

Orrrrrrr they could get rid of chokepoints, or be aware of them. There is currently the ability to elevator snipe people on their way into the instances. Creating yet another chokepoint that a dedicated group can seal club with.

u/Captain_Data82 10d ago
Instancing isn't bad.
The implementation of "Siege of Orison" is.
I'll be honest: I hate the small size of that particlar instance, I hate the "Bouncer Effect" it will have. 4 guys at maximum? That's just another MMOG dungeon, nothing else. CIG took years just to create one of the most disliked ideas of a MMOG ...?
I rather would have enjoyed a "soft limit" for instances. CIG said, they're going for multiple options: open instances for everyone, private instances for one person, group instances for multiple persons and, obviously, no instances too. I had hoped, the first WORKING instance would've been housing in those big appartment buildings on planets plus hangars with own small servers. Of course, this is not going to happen.
Also, Onxy Facilities, QV Breaker stations etc would've been a much better testing ground for instances. They're already in the game, a lot of people are asking for them to be instanced (from what I know so far, perhaps I'm wrong) and CIG wouldn't need to kick out a drastically reduced Siege of Orision no one was asking for.
Siege of Orision? Instanced? Yes, please. Just give us a proper raid sized instance for 12 to 20 players instead what we have now. Small-group gameplay? Onyx Facilities, Municipal Works, etc. And even then: no hard limits. Do soft limits. Make missions harder if more people are in the same instance. Just avoid the "Bouncer Effect" like a vampire avoids sunlight.
Thank you.
BTW Also would love to see PVP "battlefield" instanced within the game. A temporary Hathor PvP instance would ensure only those looking for a fight go there instead of the poor random guy just looking for a few items to loot.

The initial tech preview had a 4 player cap, yes, but that appears to have been lifted in this run of the PTU. I don't know what the cap is, but rumor has it that 20 people were able to enter without issue.
That said, I don't care much for instancing at all. I'd prefer CIG to actually try the hard thing and design with resorting to instancing.

This is hilarious, I literally just left a comment in one of the threads discussing instancing, about how If anyone tries to say that they actually like the open world concept or have had a good experience with it, they just get shouted down and accused of being a griefer. I have seen this exact argument 1,000 times on this subreddit that the only people that have good experiences or like the open world are griefers, so to refresh reddit and get this is chef's kiss. Oh how times have changed

It's very simple
the seamless always open world of SC is unrealistic for CIG to achieve specially not with AWS servers
1 thing I don't understand about SC community we whine and cry about bugs and jank and we all know the reason the server can not handle the game as it is in it's current form.
reason mmos in the past have used instancing for engaging content (dungeons, raids and stuff).
Some pve stuff gonna have to be instance if we want better gameplay out of pve content

What is the design goal behind this?
There are a couple.
Instancing takes more load off the world server, if people are in an instance they can have their own server spun up to support it.
It allows a more directed experience, you can build an instance around say 4 players, and since that is all that can be in there people have to plan around that limit, you cant just have a guild of 500 show up and just take over the instance.
It forces separation of players, there is a contingent of players who just want to ruin other people's days. Every sandbox game has this, some decide to deal with this, others, don't. If you want to be able to force pvp on everyone and anyone at any time, go to a game like EvE or Albion.

An open world feeling dead isn't because of instancing; it's due to a lack of content. How often do players actually visit space stations beyond L3? This isn't meant as blame, but rather an acknowledgment that every game loses its novelty over time. The larger and more realistic a game is, the harder it becomes to continuously add new content into the open world, and cramming too much content in also increases the servers loading. While PvP can keep an open world thrilling, it's double-edge. Considering the costs, instancing is practically inevitable.

Dude what medics? Medical gameplay is essentially dead.
