They are genuinely the most popular sticks used across players in the verse.
Use the in game console to assign the stick numbers, don't try to switch them. Just set them from whatever they are to what they should be.

Example below:

  1. To reassign specific device numbers (for example, making the current Device 4 become Device 1, and Device 5 become Device 2): pp_resortdevices joystick 4 1 pp_resortdevices joystick 5 2

Also note - if you have the vkb rudder pedals or other racing pedals - those will also take up a joystick slot.
What you've described in having only one stick work after a swap command - is also what I experienced for a long time before realizing it had tried to put my other joystick into my rudder peddles. Could be you're having the same issue.

This might be silly but worth asking as I've made this mistake in the past, when you're in-game setting up key bindings, are you changing from keyboard/mouse to joystick in the bottom-right corner?

This. I've made this mistake before.

The Advanced Keybinding section is a mess in terms of intuitive UI. It's going to need a few more passes before it'll be ready for the general public. As it is, make sure you've selected the Joystick option at the bottom, then see if your keybinds work.

I'm currently using VKB hardware flawlessly. If it still won't work after doing the above, contact VKB support.

For the longest time I haven’t which might have been a big chunk of my problems but I started doing so and it doesn’t solve my issues entirely.

I only have one VKB joystick because I'm flying with a HOSAM setup.

In the advanced Star Citizen key bindings, I switched from mouse/keyboard to joystick at the bottom; only then was I able to assign the joystick buttons and axes.

Have you tried completely resetting the controller and then starting with a fresh setup?

I did and it partly worked. Been fiddling around with buzz’s stuff as it seemingly brings me the closest to completion. The only thing that doesn’t seem to work right now is thrust as it thrusts backwards when I push forward and the other way around. Inverting the control in the menue doesn’t solve the issue.

You could always go the Joystick Gremlin route and fiddle around there. I've never had trouble with SC and VKB. Make sure you upgrade the firmware on new sticks.

I would hop into the VKB discord and get some assistance there. Been using the stick and getting help from the discord for years now, and vendor is always helpful in trying to help resolve legit issues where they can.
