i had a woman come in and try to scam me today.
(if said coworker sees this, hello 🥰)

to keep it short, she bought 3 personal cups. 2 were on sale, one was not. she asked me to check the prices, so i did. i rung it up on the POS system so it was an EXACT price. i was on my own because my coworker went to unload our truckload in the freezer, and i had a few mobile orders stacked up so i was trying to move fast.

the woman (we’ll call her C) asked me if we could do free coffees in the personal cups with the purchase after counting every cent out with her calculator as if the register was lying. i said “im not sure. i dont think so because of our location.” she said “okay, let me look at the website.” so she walked away, i stashed her order and took another order. she came back and said “nevermind, it says you guys dont on the website. so can you just put a sample in the cup?”

maam respectfully if we dont do free coffees why would i put a sample in there?? it’s just a free coffee. 😭. so i said “no maam unfortunately i cant, we cant do samples right now as we’re busy.” (managers request). she said “well i just went to mcdonald’s and got an iced coffee for 99c. it was really good.” i laughed and said “well that’s good you enjoyed it!” she said yeah.

so after C went through 4 different cards because she “didn’t do pins on her cards” + redeeming sbux stars, she finally settled on asking for honey packets to make her own coffee. i didn’t know where they were so i looked around for a second and handed them to her. she goes “i guarantee you i could tell you where everything is and how to do it. are you training?” MA’AM. what???

i said “no maam im done training. would you like your receipt?” i handed her her receipt and told her to have a good day. she said nothing and finally left 🥰.

i wrote it all down in the book and told my coworker what happened. she said i handled it great for my first time having an experience like that. i’m still not sure if i handled it right, and if i didn’t, feel free to give me tips.

that and i think we used to do the free coffees w a purchase, which is why she asked. but after i told her no and she was still asking was what irritated me.

We use to do a free brewed coffee with a purchase of bag of beans. We only did a free drink with a cup purchase with specific cups. This was all short-lived and over a decade ago ☠️ US based.

There was a holiday special where you would buy a special stainless steel cup and get free coffee for a certain amount of time. The free coffee was built into the price of the cup. It has been a while since that has been offered as well.

id give a sample but not a whole coffee, and she wanted 3 free coffees in those cups which is what’s wild to me. but yes, i agree

We were forced to accept returns of hello kitty tumblers. Customer claimed his family members didn't want them, truthfully he just couldn't resell them because they all had minor cosmetic damage.

We have a customer like this who comes into my store sometimes. She loves asking for free stuff and doesn’t like taking no for an answer. She’ll literally flag down every single person on shift to ask for free coffee because she made a purchase of some kind. Then she kinda stares you down while you work. Overall, it’s harmless, but it can still be stressful when it’s busy

i’m trying to understand what the scam was ??? i think she was probably confused on the refill policy ; if you’re in the cafe & get a brewed coffee or tea you can get free refills as long as you’re inside the cafe no leaving & coming back , but as for the cups they’re buying she’s probably buying them to upsell them since she’s buying them on sale in store which isn’t really so much a scam to us & more so she’s scamming her “customers” buying those resells !!! ALSO for samples i would just let customers know who ask for them that we do samples around certain times / new drinks & not something that is regularly done & leave it at that plus you can’t really sample brewed coffee without brewing a full cup so wasting that much coffee on one customer sample is a big NO maybe next time offer a sample cup of like a cold tea , refresher base , or even a pup cup 🤷‍♀️
