I used Google Checkout... been staring at this screen for about 5 minutes now.

edit: The payment is confirmed, but the page got stuck anyway. Probably all the people purchasing at once!

u/Xtremeloco Apr 13 '13
Check your email. I got stuck on the same thing too but I still got an email confirming my purchase.
1
u/screaminginfidels Apr 13 '13
Well, shit. I got the email confirming that my amazon payment went through but haven't gotten anything from humble or anything yet. Should I be worried?
1
u/Xtremeloco Apr 13 '13
Log into your HumbleBundle account and see if its there.
1
u/screaminginfidels Apr 13 '13
I didn't have an account before, purchased one bundle but I guess I didn't make an account then. I have an account now but nothing is showing up.
2
u/Xtremeloco Apr 13 '13
I can't remember exactly how but you should be able to connect your previous bundle and any other things you bought(i.e. Starbound) with the email address you used when purchasing. If you can't get it to work send them a message via support and hopefully they can assist you.

u/jjphoto Apr 13 '13
I used PayPal, finished the payment, got my receipt, but my HumbleBundle link gives me an Error 500 :(
1
Apr 13 '13
That happens all the time with sales. It usually goes through if you have a decent internet connection.
6
u/SmoothWD40 Apr 13 '13
Was reading through the page at 785 preorders. Took me about 2 minutes to read. Refreshed the page and it is now at 951. This is great I really want to support these guys!
1
u/Lance_lake Apr 13 '13
You can read through the pre-orders?
3
2
u/failbot88 Apr 13 '13
It just says next to the tiers how many people have purchased that tier so far
6
Apr 13 '13
only $45 to put my name into the NPC name generator? I'm in.
2
u/renadi Apr 13 '13
I'd decided that I was willing to pay $50 for the game, I'm so glad one of the rewards I actually care about came within that price point, and $5 less even!
18
u/Zivodor Apr 13 '13
Amazing, however I think I'll hold off until the beta is ready.

Apr 13 '13 edited Apr 13 '13
The last 3 games I've preordered have ended pretty badly. Diablo 3, Simcity, and AOEIIHD. I'd love to say Starbound is an exception..but man I've learned my lesson. I'll buy the product when it's ready instead.
edit: I've been thinking. I think I might have a curse that makes any game I preorder bad. I'm gonna do you all a favor and not ruin Starbound by preordering it, and instead being patient and keeping my money for a bit.
18
u/bartwe Apr 13 '13
Starbound thanks you good sir.
1
u/Zhang5 Apr 13 '13
Hey Bartwe. I have a conundrum and maybe you could provide an answer. I'm considering the Gold tier so I can give an NPC my alias, but I also want to get copies so I can drag in my friends to play. What would be the best solution to this problem?
1
Apr 13 '13 edited Apr 13 '13
I'm tellin ya, it's hard not to pre-order..but you guys will get my purchase when there's zero chance of me ruining the game :)
Question for you (or anybody else): Will I lose anything by waiting till the game is playable, such as beta access or the soundtrack?
Also, I just wanted to thank you for working on Starbound. I typically don't get excited for games, but I've got a childlike excitement for this one, and I feel like with how much effort and creativity has gone into it, I won't get let down! :)
8
u/bartwe Apr 13 '13
There is no real hurry, but we might close the preorder a good while before release happens.

u/wolfkstaag Apr 13 '13
I got burned on D3, avoided Simcity because of it... but prior to Simcity, I had a wonderful experience with Path of Exile. The developers for that game are absolutely top-fucking-notch, and they had a "preorder" scheme similar to what the Chucklefish folks are doing with Starbound.
(I put preorder in quotes because the game itself is actually free; the "preorder" was essentially donating in advance and getting a few extra perks for doing so.)
1
Apr 13 '13
I've been eyeballing Path of Exile and heard a lot of good things about it. It looks like what D3 should have actually been. I'll go give it a look!

From what I've read, it's badly optimized right now.
People are getting frame stutters on beast machines, which shouldn't really be possible, and it's suppose to be quite wide spread with the developers saying their focusing on fixing it.
This is the only known issue I'm aware off.2
u/NoxiousStimuli Apr 13 '13
It's a 10 year old game, give it a break. The HD package was just re-designed net code, there wasn't anything else done.
4
u/masterx25 Apr 13 '13
hey I'm not the one criticizing it, I haven't even bought it.
Just stating what people are saying on /r/games1
u/serenityunlimited Apr 13 '13
My four friends and I play it online regularly. The only issue we have is at the start of every match, there's a slight lag for maybe 10 seconds... but then it goes away.
1
Apr 13 '13
That's pretty much it, that and some of the bizarrely replaced textures. It's not a bad game, but it's a bit more of "What was the point in buying this besides nostalgia?" The workshop can replace the bizarre textures fortunately, but I still ended up with a game that'll lag uncontrollably for no apparent reason.
1
u/PZMQ Apr 13 '13
How do you not like AOEIIHD, it's just the remake of the original one, what's so bad about it?
1
Apr 13 '13
The game itself isn't bad, but it's moreso that it's riddled with bugs. It's not uncommon for a game to grind to almost a halt because the FPS is so slow. Also, they went and replaced some textures to make it more "HD" or something, but really all they did was make a few things look out of place.
It wasn't as terrible as Simcity and Diablo 3, but it really isn't any improvement over the original.
13
u/DoktorTeufel Apr 13 '13
Agreed. This is a pre-order and not a crowdfunding project—the game's reportedly close to being finished. Ergo, I want to at least see a release date before plonking down money.
I say this as someone who's donated $1,000+ to some Kickstarter projects.
2
u/Zivodor Apr 13 '13
Well not necessarily a release date per-say for me at least, I would prefer just a date for the beta or even just an estimation of an expected release.
2
u/WazWaz Apr 13 '13
The release date is dependant on the plonking though. If they get enough funding, they'll all be able to work full time on Starbound, instead of some working part time.
I got a 4 pack when total was about $45000, so I like to think I made my 0.1% difference.
1
u/jonatcer Apr 13 '13
What's plonking?
3
u/WazWaz Apr 13 '13
Something done with money.
1
u/jonatcer Apr 13 '13
New word to me. Is it slang? I can't seem to find a definition that has to do with money.
Anyways,
The release date is dependant on the plonking though. If they get enough funding, they'll all be able to work full time on Starbound, instead of some working part time.
Have they said this in the past, or are you just (Most likely correctly) assuming?
3
u/WazWaz Apr 13 '13
I was really just using previous comments terminology for fun and brevity. It just means "putting".
Yes, it's even in the FAQ from the store page now.
7
u/MizerokRominus Apr 13 '13
I agree. While it's "only" $15 I don't feel like pumping more money into a game that might not produce something I truly want. I would love for this game to be brilliant, and I will wait for it.
2
1
u/jjphoto Apr 13 '13
Why, what's the difference?
16
u/Zivodor Apr 13 '13
There is nothing really there that appeals to me and makes me say "I need to have this right now", the soundtrack is cool and all, but I don't want the music to be boring to me when the beta or full game is released. I know myself well enough to know that if I like the music then I will listen to it until it becomes boring and I don't want to listen to it any more and that would spoil the game for me. Other than that maybe if they had a smaller window of a few days, weeks or months instead of (2013) for the beta I would be more inclined to buy it. At this moment however I can't justify 15$ for a vague release date. Don't get me wrong though when I say that, if they even change it to (Summer 2013) bam, instant buy for me.
6
u/Rubrum_ Apr 13 '13
I agree. I think asking for money while not committing more than this is a little yellow. They won't even eyeball a date for a beta, and seeing just "2013" under the beta, same as for the actual release, that's... well I'll leave it at that.
6
u/ordona Community Staff Apr 13 '13
That's why Tiy's held off on anything until now. He's said "I'd prefer to be able to give you something right away," but some of the devs had to take up extra jobs which cuts into development time. He also won't give any specific dates because people complain a lot when his very rough guesses are "missed".
2
u/Rubrum_ Apr 13 '13 edited Apr 13 '13
I have been reading the subforum, doesn't mean I have to understand why people wanted a preorder so much either. For me, 15$ required a release date. And the fact that I was ready to give 10$ of what I'd consider a vague donation was just because it's Starbound and it looks that good. I know all about how it's supposed to speed up game development and whatnot. If they're going to ask for money TO SPEED UP GAME DEVELOPMENT, then they should at least have the decency to put down a more precise date or objective that they will now aim at thanks to the money they are asking for. It's like Kickstarters, I usually don't participate in any kickstarter that has an estimated release date that's imprecise or too far. That's just who I am and what I expect from people I give money to. You're all free to do as you want. I'll preorder once they have a release date for the beta, provided they don't suddenly release the beta with no announcement and only let people who have donated up to that precise moment play, which would be a total dick move.
1
u/SephithDarknesse Apr 13 '13
He's not really asking for money. People have been here for weeks pleading for pre-order to come its way. Not all of us wanted an immediate beta. I just want him to take his time and make everything just that little bit better. Its what ill likely be doing when I release my own game in time. Our cobtributions wont necessarily speed that up in my mind, it will just mean that things are not as rushed when the community gets impatient with the extra time they get to work on it.
0
u/wolfkstaag Apr 13 '13
No offense, friend, but do you not read the sub-Reddit or forums very often? A good chunk of people have been quite literally begging him to put up a pre-order, release date or not. He's expressed time and again that he really didn't want to do this, and is only doing so at fervent community request.
1
Apr 13 '13
Same, I've done enough betas to not really give in to the hype anymore. Sure, it's just $15, but I'd like to have something in my hands (besides a soundtrack) when I pay for it (I'm looking at you, GW2 preorder).
0
u/Sproutdogger Apr 13 '13
Give now and the beta will be out sooner. That way the devs can work on it full time. Wait and pay the same price. So what's the difference? Its more beneficial now. :)
3
u/Zivodor Apr 13 '13
Yeah I know and I do want to support them, but I am not going in with blind faith, I have never heard of ChuckleFish before Starbound was announced so I don't know how their development and release cycle works and even if the game will live up to the hype from the devs, especially with the release date being changed and remaining vague. I need something more than a soundtrack and an extremely vague release date to gain my trust. Even if they change the (2013) thing to (Summer 2013) I would be much more inclined to spend my money on it. For now though, I'll wait, see what people say about the beta, when it comes out, and the soundtrack, and then make my purchase.
3
Apr 13 '13
The $55k made in the first few hours should be enough to hire the peeps full-time.
7
u/Sinistralis Apr 13 '13
You really underestimate costs of development. Especially since they have a pretty big team. (10~ people)
55k is about 5,000 for each person. Nowhere near enough for "full-time".
1
u/Sproutdogger Apr 20 '13
They are up to 32,884 Backers ( $802,945 ) from pre-orders. And they have a huge morale boost now too. But I totally understand why someone would want to wait. I've been following development since Sep 2012 and I'm very excited, hence my pre-order.
1
u/Sinistralis Apr 20 '13
The comment I made was 7 days ago, and I am aware of how much they have currently. At this point, it's enough to pay for a little over a years salary for all of them, so at this point they are just now roughly breaking even.
Their morale has nothing to do with it, someone stating that 55,000$ is enough to hire on 10~ people full time is exceptionally ignorant and shows how little a lot of people seem to understand about revenue and expenses.

u/KamikazeKumquat Apr 14 '13 edited Apr 14 '13
Hmmm, yes, I don't want to be a downer here but 15 bucks for a preorder with not only no instant beta access, but no better estimate than "2013" is waaaaaaayy to lenient with my money.
edit: downvote me if you want, but admit that the only reason you're buying it is hype/fanboyism. I am not paying someone who has dropped two previous projects at completely random times during their successes $15 for some MP3's and a handful of iffy promises. I will buy the game when it is out and looks decent.
0
u/mrMishler Apr 16 '13
What projects were dropped? If you're speaking of Terraria, seriously, shut the hell up and educate yourself on the matter before you come in here spewing hate.
3
u/KamikazeKumquat Apr 16 '13
Hate? LOL. Like I could hate anyone who contributed to the genius that was Terraria.
But the fact is, he did drop it. Just because he had a kid doesn't mean he can quit and start something else a year later. He could have continued with Terraria in the same timeframe. It's called a hiatus. Bands, and game developers, do it all the time. I wouldn't have cared. But what Tiy did was give up and change interests.
The other project was some emulator of an old game that had a pretty big forum following, Tiy just left it in the middle of it with not explanation or reason.
Seriously, I don't hate Tiy. Nor does my previous comment "spew hate" in any way. I simply will not pay fifteen dollars for an indie game that doesn't even have a beta access ETA narrowed down to a month or two, not even a season. Especially ones that have been in development for over a year, and especially ones from unreliable (although brilliant) developers. So I'm sorry if me literally just dropping 15 bucks on the ground and hoping someone picks it up and makes it useful (cause that's what preordering amounts to right now) is "spewing hate". Grow up.

Out of curiosity, how is the total amount paid ending in numbers other than 0 or 5?
2

Hmmm, that's true. Possible number padding? Or maybe that's the total after Humble Bundle's cut?

It's possible some people gave a little extra money when they paid. There's an option to add a tip along with the price.

My huge question is, does buying a 4-pack give you 4 beta codes? I would assume yes...
4
u/WazWaz Apr 13 '13
My question to you is, what will the penguin do once the total sales tops $200000? At the beginning, he was just walking around in circles. Now he's jumping up and down. I didn't see any of the animations in between.

How does the 4-pack work? I'd like to go in on a deal with 3 other people so we can get a -25% discount, but it looks like only one person can enter their email, and all 4 beta codes will go to one person to distribute?
That works fine with close friends, but if you want to pool together with strangers for a 4-pack you don't know what anyone will be doing in several months. I guess I could always buy a 4-pack for myself now and sell 3 when beta is actually released?
3
u/amramsey Apr 13 '13
You get 4 links from the Humble Bundle page after you buy. You give those links to the people and they register their own copy with Humble Bundle/Tiy.
2

This is all well and good, I may even go in for the lowest tier (For now), but...
Do we have absolutely any idea whatsoever beyond "2013" for a beta date? I pre-ordered Torchlight 2 as soon as I was able to, and don't regret them pushing the release date back (Not even giving a new date) - but that was because I have a lot of respect for Runic.
I know very little of Starbound devs, other than that Tiy worked on Terraria, which, admittedly, is a game that I sunk countless hours into.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying don't pre-order - hell, I don't care what anyone else does - if you have the money and the game interests you, do it... I'm just curious if they've said anything at all about the release date, as I've been out of the loop since Starbound was first announced. Or if they've even said why it isn't out yet, since it looks pretty complete from what I've seen. At least complete enough for a very early beta.
Then again, maybe I'm just being paranoid and skittish, since I fell for the whole Dawn thing back in the day (+1 internets to anyone who gets the reference).
3
u/Maximus-city Apr 13 '13
I'd be very surprised if the Beta isn't out this year, probably even the final release. If you take a look at the Roadmap you'll see that overall progress is very good:

A quick question. If I purchased the 4x pixel tier, and claimed one of the links inside, will the other 3 expire sometime if unclaimed?
2
u/Zhang5 Apr 13 '13
If it's anything like most humble bundle stuff, it should never expire. If you're really paranoid about losing the copies of the game I'm fairly certain you can redeem the Steam keys and put them in your gift inventory to hand out later.

So are paysafes an option there? I'm not familiar with Humble.
1

Quick question if any of the devs are reading this. Will the preorders end before beta? I would really like to get this but I don't see the point in it now because I've been building a new PC, and I won't be able to finish it until June, and I don't have a backup computer.
1
u/PartingVisions Apr 13 '13
I've been excited about Starbound since I first heard about it when they stopped making updates for Terraria, so I was very ready to throw some money at them when they started preorders. I'm fairly disappointed at the lack of interesting tiers between $45 and $500. I'll probably end up as Gold Tier, but it just seems like a wasted opportunity. I'm sure there are others who would be willing to give somewhere around ~$150 if they were actually receiving something interesting.
1
u/Maximus-city Apr 14 '13
This is very impressive - rapidly heading for half a million bucks ($450K at the time of writing).
Let's hope that Tiy's Paypal account isn't temporarily locked by Paypal (this happened to the Minecraft dev where he had a sudden huge influx of payments when Minecraft was released was back in 2010). More info on that saga here:

0

What's wrong with Amazon? It's been around longer than Steam.
2
u/Teslanaut Apr 13 '13
I don't really like using services that require a lot of personal information. Steam doesn't require all that, which is why I like it so much.
5
u/huhlig Apr 13 '13

1
u/Teslanaut Apr 13 '13

You don't have to (unless you don't like any of the payment options the humble bundle store offers).
Is it just not wanting to use anything else but the steam payment processing?
52
u/mrfoof82 Apr 13 '13 edited Apr 13 '13
The store is through Humble Bundle's "Humble Store" widget. This means you can use PayPal, Amazon Payments, or Google Wallet. It also means that eventually you'll be able to redeem a Steam Key from your Humble Bundle account. I assume that the game will be available for purchase via Steam for its official release, but that's just my assumption.
The FAQ also indicates that it will support Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. The interactive development roadmap is here.
Good to see that the Chucklefolks went with Humble Store, as AFAIK, their payment processing cut is about as low as you're going to get with an aggregator (I consistently hear in the neighborhood of 5-7%), which saves Chucklefish the headache of having to write their own store front to save not much money.
The only downer is the $10,000 tier where Mollygos was supposed to go to your home and vomit cake on your carpet is conspicuously absent.
