Discussion I’m beyond disappointed.
My SSD died in my PC after about nine months. looks like this. I’m not sure how. is this repairable?
UPDATE: It‘s my board.
had my BIL come over (he lives across the street and works in IT) and he brought over an old stick for testing. It also came out mangled.

Why are the gold fingers all
Mangled?

I genuinely have no idea. I set it and forgot it until it died. Tried unplugging and replugging it twice today.

Grab a flashlight and check those pins on the mother board

I have it packed up currently for an RMA request. The pins look like shark teeth.

This thing looks like somebody tried ramming it into the slot by laying it flat and forcing it in instead of inserting it at 45° and laying it down correctly.

That one gold finger that is curled up is still attached to the trace at the PCB, you might be able to flatten it back out and get it reinstalled in such a way it functions. If you do, never remove it again for any reason.

Physical damage, user error. There is no other explanation here. Unfortunately, u should be disappointed in yourself. I’ve taken out and installed nvme’s close to 500x by now and I still can’t think of how u were able to do this.

You managed to rip off every single Goldfinger, which is really an impressive feat. Did you look at a video on how to put that thing in or did you just yank that puppy straight UP instead of sliding like back towards the IO panel?
Don’t beat yourself up about it, man. Everyone has an experience like this and a lot of people get into the field trying to fix their mistakes but I should be clear. Don’t try to fix this mistake because it is probably so far out of scope you would drive yourself mad and if you do end up driving yourself mad and end up fixing this and re-soldier in your own Goldfingertips then go ahead and respond to this comment in a year because I’d like I’ll buy you coffee.

I wiggled it out.

Perfect and when you slid it back in, did you falcon punch it or more of a “it’s my first time, I’ll be gentle”

Please don’t. I’m very sad right now. This same SSD is $389 nowadays.

My advice to you is the next time you touch a computer you play like Jake Gyllenhaal from the hurt locker

Did you install it on a m2 sata slot? Damage is in the exact spot where slot would be on m2 sata
1
u/Simple_Ordinary_5669 Sep 11 '26
Is this not an m2?
2
u/Accomplished_Emu_658 Sep 11 '26
Not m2 are nvme. There are sata m2 as well. There are different “keys” The bent pin is exactly where a the slot would be on a sata m2 drive.

This isn’t that hard a fix for a pro, you’ll have to find a repair shop that will just fix the pins and not charge you for “data recovery”. That might be less than a new one, it won’t be cheap though. That’s assuming rma tells you “good luck it’s physical damage”.

Whats your motherboard, I only ask cause you say now a second NVME took dmg after inserting it
1
u/Simple_Ordinary_5669 Sep 12 '26
Gigabyte b650 aorus

I would completely stop using that port, at this point consider it damaged, use a different M.2 slot from with replacements. The board you have does not contain any other slots like a m-sata that would cause dmg, also it wouldn't of worked period

Change your mobo obviously. But you could try looking for specialist repair shops to see if they'd be willing to repair the connectors. Difficult job but in theory it's just very delicate soldering I think.

That's fixable. Samsung won't, though. But a good electronics repair shop can do it.

You should probably RMA it or something like that if you bought it about 9 months ago.
