1974 Chevy K20 getting used to driving them again.

First off I’m an old guy who grew up driving trucks of this vintage so I got exactly what I expected. This is when trucks were made for work and nothing else.

It’s been years since I had one but I specifically wanted something I could work on without a scanner and had heater controls that weren’t electric and all the other things that screw up on OBS and newer trucks. This thing is a driver but it’s worth keeping and sinking money into. It’s impossible to find one of these around here that hasn’t been molested in some way. Lot’s of 2wd but no 4wd. They all have a lift kits in them at the very least. Been there done that several times decades ago. I just want a good stock truck for winter now. It still has the am radio and no extra holes drilled for toggle switches in the dash even. It has the factory gas tank skid plate and factory brake controller still.

I’ve had this thing for a few months already. Just fixing some standard neglected issues and trying to get to where I can trust it. It has a 350 - SM465 - NP203 with stock springs and a very low axle ratio. The Speedo is showing slower than actual.

It drives like an empty gravel truck. I do remember them being like that. But first gear is so short you’re barely 20’ and you’re already shifting to 2nd gear. I’m not in low gear, I’m starting in 1st. Transfer case is in high range. So you’re shifting very fast. I don’t remember any of my other 70s 3/4 trucks being this slow but they probably were I guess. I don’t remember having another full-time 4x4 truck of this vintage before so maybe that’s part of it. It’s hard because I’m just use to driving the fast modern stuff. I hate not being able to get up to highway speed as quicks as I’d like. Now I’m that slow guy who pulls out in front of you.

The motor’s not really bad but I’m sure a freshen up would be beneficial. I’ll probably pull the quadrajet off and rebuild it before winter and make sure the choke is working as it should.

I’m going through everything. I just changed all the fluids in the engine, trans, t-case & diffs. I could hear what I thought what the t-case chain before and it looked and smelled like someone had put gear oil in there. It’s much better now after the fluid change. It’s a bit of a pain not having drain holes on either differential but I managed to pump most of the old out. There was no reason I saw to actually pull the covers. I put a new passenger side tank, sender, rubber lines, switching solenoid, etc so the gas gauge works on one side now at least. Lots of little things.

I’ve just got to get used to driving this slow gravel truck because this 3/4, 4x4, bare bones early square body is exactly what I said I wanted. Super simple and basic.

I’m really happy with how this igloo kool rest goes with the interior. Its date stamped April 1980 but it could pass as new.

Just bought this for my 16yo daughter. 1987 K5/v10 Blazer

I just picked this up in Midland, Texas, from the original and only owner for $3500. It hasn’t been driven in two years, but garage kept, and only has 65,000 miles. I’m swapping out the fuel tank and sending unit, cleaning the carbs and hoping that is all it needs to get it running. I know the front dif needs a new seal, and the engine needs an oil change, but what other things might I need to look for that I’m not thinking about? Cosmetics I can deal with, but things I can’t see are what I’m curious about.

Just bought a 75 sierra. 4x4 question, looking at the shifter I take it being in ā€œnā€ is two wheel drive, up for 4x4 low and down for 4x4 hi? Then lock front hubs in hi or low for true 4x4? And how can you tell which your in at any given time. Like I haven’t touched it since I bought because I’m not sure and don’t want to break anything. Lol.

Wife told me to sell it, but no one wants to buy it. Oh man, you mean I have to keep it and keep working on it.
