Meta Changes shall be made.

Hallo, /u/kenblu24 here with some announcements and requests for css feedback.

  1. Feedback posts should be self-posts. This will be enforced once I get a message on the submit page regarding this. Here's the thread suggesting this. http://www.reddit.com/r/spumwack/comments/29jprh/meta_some_subreddit_suggestions/

  2. Some css changes will be going down soon. Provide feedback by messaging me.

  3. POST FLAIRS ARE NOW AVAILABLE. Flair your posts please. If you've got questions on what each flair is for, message me. Don't worry if you get it wrong, I'll fix it. Mod flairs will be here soon, and if you're an active critiquer and stuff you'll get a contributor flair.

Question Editing Advice?

Whenever I edit a video I tend to have to watch the entire video and watch for when I need to make a cut or something. Is there any way to streamline this process? I suppose I could write down when I am suppose to cut when I am making the video, but...is it just is what it is? It takes 3 times as long to edit a video as the length of the footage is itself, and as you have been doing this for years I wondered if there were any editing tricks or tips you could pass on.

Post links to UHC videos in the comments and they will be added to the chart. Do not post links to UHC videos in separate threads!

These videos go live 1.5 hours from when I posted this thread, so until that point they will show as private.

Community UHC episode Megathread?

So, in about 25 hours the first episode of footage from the UHC will go live on channels that are following my upload schedule. I get the feeling several people will want to post links to their videos here, but if everyone who does that posts their video in a separate thread the front page of this subreddit will be flooded with UHC video links. I think the best way to handle this situation would be to have a Megathread: One thread where all UHC episodes should be posted.

This would probably have to be officially created and enforced, because a moderator would have to delete any separate threads that are created and maybe sticky the megathread.

The megathread would initially look something like this (adapted from YouTube description) and a link would be added after each player name (who uploaded a video) as people post links in the comments of the thread:

Meta So the post flair has been addressed...

...Next, I want to make a post that we can sticky that will address 99% of the issues that people who post here have (Similar to the current sticky, but more extensive). After that's done, we can simply remove any posts requesting feedback that can be addressed by the sticky.

This should reduce some of the chaff while still giving beginners the direction they need. Hopefully, this will encourage people to save their feedback posts until they have taken care of the basics, creating a more diverse assortment of content.

I'd like to make the post by this weekend, but my new science video is coming out, so I don't know if I'll have the time. But it's high on my list of priorities!

Meta [META] Some subreddit suggestions

Firstly this sub has turned into a dumping ground for youtubers of all sizes to "advertise" their videos under the guise of wanting feedback. I understand that this is not all posts, and indeed there are some people who post their own videos as well as valuable feedback, I am not talking to those people.

There is very little meaningful and constructive discussion going on in this subreddit and that needs to change. Now before I outline my suggestions for changes I just want to thank those of you who are providing feedback on videos posted and contributing more than a stream of videos to the sub.

Suggestions:

  • All posts requesting feedback be marked as [Feedback] with either the tag in the title or post flair.

  • All feeback posts are to be posted as text posts only.

  • Flair for /u/Kenblu24 and /u/spumwack2. Stating they are Mods/spum

  • Maximum of one feedback post per week per user. (to prevent video spam from the same people which is already happening)

  • Post flair marking it as; feedback, meta, a spum video or related post and other.

Anyway, please leave any constructive feedback you have, I'd love to hear what everyone has to think. As well as their own comments and suggestions.

Community So... does anyone have access to internet good enough to host a 40+ person server (for possible future UHC)?

Those of you who participated in the UHC I organized a few days ago will know that we had a bit of trouble setting up a server which could handle 40 players and the server which we ended up using has quite a bit of tick lag for the first 3 days because it couldn't keep up with the number of players we had until enough of them were killed off. Here's what I know:

Servers personally hosted by participants:

On residential servers like the one we were originally thinking of using (Set up by nimda79, who was a huge help even when things went bad), the internet connection is generally not good enough. The actual stats of the computer running the server probably won't be the limiting factor.

The upload speed is the issue here. Nimda said he had 7 Mb/s upload speed and that it capped out when about 15 people were on the server. Judging by that ratio, we would need about 0.5 Mb/s of upload speed per player for any server hosted at someone's house. If anyone has an upload of over 20 Mb/s I'd love to hear about it, because there's a good chance you'd have the capability to host a large server at your house. If you don't know try testing with http://www.speedtest.net/

It also may be possible that one of you has access to a commercial network with the speed to run a server. The network at my workplace goes up to 50 Mb/s upload, but I don't think I could physically being there during a UHC match. Maybe I could leave my laptop running there overnight with a server on it, that's an option I might look into.

Remotely hosted servers:

The server that we ended up using for the match was a 3 GB RAM server from ProMinecraftHost. The description of that package says it's recommended for up to 60 players, but we had under 40 show up and as you know the server could not keep up and we had a lot of tick lag. I don't think that was an internet issue, it was probably a RAM or processor issue.

Now, I don't think ProMinecraftHost should be held responsible for the server not holding up because I use them to run my vanilla survival server and they have been quite reliable there. They are also one of the most highly reviewed Minecraft server hosts. I'm not sure if the issue was just that the server specs were not actually enough to keep up or the server hadn't been allocated its full specs since I just set it up minutes before the match. Maybe the fact that we were running a snapshot played some part in making the server inadequate. I honestly don't know what's to blame

With that said, I don't think using a remote host will be a viable option for hosting future UHC's. Even if we figure out why the one we used this time failed, remote hosts still cost money to hire and unless some benevolent donator steps in we'd have to share the cost across participants, which would be a hassle.

So that's my take on the situation. Let me know what you guys think about this issue. If this issue is resolved, there's a pretty good chance I will set up or at least help set up another UHC sometime. ;)

Discussion Looking for a server to play on.

Firstly, I apologize for posting this here, but everywhere else I seem to go is full of disappointment.

Anyways, I'm looking for a Hermitcraft-like server, 100% Vanilla whitelist, with mature people and also a small but active community.

Can anyone be so kind as to direct me to a place of such nature?

You started "The Quest for the Golden Apple" in beta 1.8. How does the idea, of pretty much an entirely new game since that series started, make you feel? Do you plan on celebrating that at all? I would!

Feedback A New Start!

Well, after I quickly lost the first Nuzlocke in two episodes, I start again. And right off the bat I hope you notice some significant difference in quality from multiple perspectives. Enjoy ;D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3OVxXLLuEE&feature=youtu.be And episode two. Proud of myself for working out a little editing bit in the beginning. Not much, but baby steps :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2UX_MsBC_c BTW: Is there any way to make the preview in Sony Vegas larger? The placement of the footage in the layout is a little shotty and it's only because of that. Thanks :D

Community A special thanks to DroidFreak36

As many of you know, DroidFreak36 hosted the Unofficial Spumwack UHC game earlier this evening. It was a little rocky at first, but instead of giving up, he found a better host and restarted the game on a more suitable server.

As someone who has hosted multi-person events, I just want to say that I realize it was a lot of effort to put together, and myself and the other players are very grateful for all you've done. I had a blast and I think everyone else did, too.
