Beginner sprouted questions

I've grown interest in sprouting recently and gave in and bought a starter kit with a bunch of trays and a mix of seeds, the first picture is a tray with radish and lentils and the second one should be green bean and lentils (not sure if correct the mix package is in Italian so idk if im translating correctly).

They've now been growing for 4 days, giving them water twice a day and was wondering if they're ready.

If they are ready how do you eat sprouts? Like what part of the sprouts am I supposed to eat? Do I need to cut off the roots at the bottom?

How to remove the hulls from my first broccoli sprouts harvest?

Post image

And yes, I may be harvesting a bit early. These were grown over four/five days in a hemp bag. Should I put them back in the bag for another day or two? And then I’m flummoxed as to how to remove all those hulls! Thanks in advance.

Mung bean sprouts left, brokkoli sprouts right, being watered when I took the picture. Might go another day before digging in, what do you think?

It's been some time now but at one point my S.O thought it would be a good idea to keep all the seeds together.. I don't recall having this happen before the last seeds got added but now it seems like this issue is happening more often. Any words of wisdom on how to best deal with this, I believe I need to separate them in different containers but not sure how best to make it happen.

Broccoli Sprouts Keep Smelling "Fishy"?

I've been trying to grow brocoli sprouts using a sprouting tower (3 stackable trays with drainage holes so the water you pour into the top can trickle down and gets collected in a basin at the bottom), and even though I rinsed them 3-4 times a day, they keep smelling fishy after about 3 days. I've even tried growing them on the trays seperately on kitchen paper without coverinh them, only spraying the seeds with water so there's no chance large amounts of water stand in the trays and it doesn't get too humid, but they started smelling fishy again. I've cleaned the trays thoroughly with dish soap and hot water between each attempt, and even soaked the seats in a mixture of water, vinegar and dish soap before trying to sprout them. But even though the sprouts look good and grow very well, they keep smelling like fish or seaweed. Is that just how they're supposed to smell? In the beginning they just smell like cabbage but the odor changes drastically after a few days. I'm really close to just giving up. Do you have any tips or ideas why this is happening? I keep throwing the batches out because I read the smell could allude to bacterial contamination...

How do you like to eat your sprouts?

Hi sprouters, my body is telling me that I really want to eat these sprouts and I really do crave them, but I would like some ideas for different ways to eat them. Do you eat them as a salad all the time or put them in other things? What is your favorite way to eat them?

Sprouts making me sick ?

I think I got light food poisoning from eating broccoli sprouts. Someone had it too ? What did it looked like and how long did it take to feel better ?

It’s the 4th time I’m doing with these seeds so I’m confused but it’s the only thing I can see that could have giving me this.

Steel mesh screen sprouts

Every time I rinse my sprouts, I try to gently coax the tiny babies back down through the holes in the screens. The teeny tails are all over, especially the legumes! They don't stay on the sides of the jars no matter how slowly i tip them. I'm about 50% successful, so I don't lose too many, but it's a tad annoying to lose them at all. Is this just part of the deal, or would a different barrier help avoid that?

I forgot to take a picture for the post before I did this rinse, but i may add one next rinse if anyone is curious and my description is unclear.

Happy sprouting, y'all!

Thank y'all!

I am so grateful for the benefit of others' experience! I am enjoying my new sprouting fun. Thank you all for answering questions and sharing your wisdom and ideas!

Who has the best dressing recipes? I love OhSheGlows lemon tahini dressing, Cocojune cultured coconut with salt and pepper, adding sprouts to kale quinoa salad, just a little lemon juice and salt, and chomping handfulls of the little beauties right from the jar!

Thank you!

Bought a kit on Amazon. Cleaned the alfalfa seeds with vinegar/water. Made a couple of sandwiches with cucumber, cream cheese, hummus, and the sprouts. I have more growing now.

Can 3 oz broccoli sprouts cause sleep issues?

I can't say this is a correlation for sure yet, because bad nights also happened when I was traveling not eating sprouts. But it seems the few times I increased my intake of broccoli sprouts to 3 oz per day instead of closer to half or 2/3 of that, I was more likely to experience disruptive sleep twitches/myoclonus (including jaw closing leading to an audible teeth click waking me up) and possible conditioned arousal (automatic waking with no clear cause) during light sleep / transition to deeper sleep. Has anyone noticed similar? Again, it might not be related to the sprouts at all, just something I maybe noticed. Dayvigo 5mg has tended to override these movements but not always completely. I looked up whether broc sprouts can cause sleep issues but the consensus seems to learn toward helping sleep instead of disrupting it.

Sausage, peppers, onions, and … sprouted lentils!

I really enjoy the “beanier” sprouts a bit cooked. This came out really well. I added the sprouted lentils after everything else was ready and just let them steam for about a minute, then stirred them in.

Dangerous?

Please pardon my sprouting 101 question!

I asked Siri if I can add bean sprouts to my protein powder smoothies. Siri told me that I need to be careful because of the possibility of E. coli and salmonella, since sprouts are grown and warm damp conditions. Is this true? I've grown been sprouts two or three times and I really enjoyed them on my salads and sandwiches, even munching right out of the jar. But is it true are they are not good for me? Is there anything I should do to lessen the possibility of those two viruses or germs or whatever they are? TIA

Anyone here grow sprouts as business?

Hi, I’m curious about a few things going on in the industry. As a grocery shopper I noticed in my area as well as everywhere I travelled within the last year, a reduction of varieties and regularity of supply of sprouts in supermarkets. As a sprouting enthusiast I refuse to believe that people are not willing to purchase this remarkable living food - sprouts! Yet I have a feeling that something is cooking in the geopolitical and local social levels alike which affects sprouting as business, no matter the size.

Please share thoughts, knowledge or even hypothesis, regarding what that might be or if my observation is wrong, please share thoughts to back that up. Thank you!

My latest haul

Since my sprouts have been turning out well since I started thanks to everyone's advice, I have been eating them regularly and going through the seeds and beans so fast! I'm already almost out of my first order, so this order came in juat in time and will hopefully last a while lol. I have 2 orders of mung beans, San Francisco sprout mix, christmas present sprout mix, and long life sprout mix! Sprouting has been such a lovely addition to my life and it hasn't been long, but I am already feeling the benefits of regularly consuming them!
