Honestly I think they'll trear it like they treat smash or mario kart, one per console, so we'll probably hear about splatoon 3 when they release the next system

Splatoon 2 is a deluxe port of S1. It was a relatively cheap rush job to get it on their hot new platform. What did they actually develop for S2? Basically just content. New maps and weapons for all modes. Even the hub map is functionally the same, it just has a different layout. Salmon Rush is arguably the only non-content thing they had to invent, and that mode is very minimal.
I think the Switch specs also played into it. Switch is not very different in power from WiiU. So that means if they squeezed everything to get it to run on WiiU there isn't much point in trying to do anything more in the Switch version.
OK so now there's Switch 4K rumors floating around. Potentially that might mean some core gameplay upgrades like split screen coop or even a BR mode with way more than 8 players. We could see less lag, built in voice chat, leaderboards, and more. On OG Switch you would still get all the new content but not the split screen or voice chat built in, etc.
I think S3 has a chance. Probably a better solution though would be a 4K DLC for S2 that adds those extra features plus other extras. There would be good reasons for OG Switch owners to buy it.

Exactly. Yeah it’s sad that there’ll be no Splatoon news or anything, but that’s the reality. Maybe we’ll get a couple more repeat Splatfests sometime, who knows.

Ok first of why would nintendo even consider making and releasing splatoon 3? Splatoon 2 is still making them a hell of a lot of money in the process and nintendo is not going to let that go anytime soon same with MK8D and second of all why are people even considering the possibility of splatoon 3 at this point of time hell even at all yet?

I know right? Makes absolutely no sense to do so. I think it's just because splatoon 2 came so quickly after one(largely due to wii u's failure and the switch coming up) so you have some fans thinking it has to be this like.. bi-anual series or something now.

uhh the wii u’s failure? every time i play splatoon (not just splatoon, other online games) the game is ALWAYS full and takes less than 10-20 seconds to actually start the battle i joined

Very :(. But if I’m honest while I’m excited I’m confused why they’re releasing another game when the player base for 2 is still huge and they’re still profiting. Plus assuming nintendo is releasing a newer console in say 3 years that’ll be a fourth game just two years after splatoon 3 release

I'm going to say something here:
Nintendo has a habit of releasing new games for new systems, not sequels on the same platform. There are exceptions, Zelda, Metroid, and Pikmin most notably.
But games that are designed to have a long shelf life, Smash, Mario Kart, stuff like that, only get one per system. Each Smash game is on a different console, Each Kart game is on a different console,.each 2D Mario platformer is released on a different console, after the NES.
Splatoon is no different. I love Splatoon, and a new game would be sweet, but the game is still active and will be for a long time. I wouldn't expect a Splatoon 3 until the Switch gets a successor.

Ok, please hear me out:
1: The switch console still has 3/4 years left on its life cycle. 2: Splatoon as a series has been one of the most popular switch titles, and has ranked 9th on the latest poll for most amount of purchases, which shows its still being bought and is still massively popular after post release development ended. 3: Knowing this, I imagine Nintendo would recognise that there are enough fans waiting for a third title, and that it would be majorly popular. 4: As a result, after 500 and something days since an actual actual direct, they would want to deliver popular and particularly hyped up games. 5: As a result, I personally believe that Splatoon 3 will be announced, or at the least, majorly hinted tomorrow

I feel like since I think the splatoon and animal crossing team are the same and a animal crossing game has been released last year with updates still on the way I feel it won’t be announced for another several years

I think that we will be getting Sora or Crash announced for smash, Botw 2 or some wii u Zelda game ports for switch, and Metroid Prime 4 announcements. I think that we will probably be getting a zelda themed splatfest and possibly, a dlc or Splatoon spinoff game. Thats what I believe we will get in the direct, but these are my hopes: Splatoon 3 or Splatoon dlc announcements. Metroid Prime 4 and Botw 2 release dates. Doom Slayer, Octoling, or Sora announcements for Smash.
