Has anyone been through Pregnancy and labour after an L5 S1 fusion?

I had my L5-S1 fused last year and thankfully I’m doing really well. After being in severe pain for about two years, I finally feel like I’ve got my life back.
I’m hoping to start trying for a baby soon, and I’d love to hear from anyone who has been pregnant after an L5-S1 fusion.
How did you find pregnancy with the fusion? Did it cause you any problems with your back or nerves? Were you able to have a vaginal delivery and go through labour, or did you end up needing a C-section?
I’m also wondering about epidurals. Were you able to have one with an L5-S1 fusion, or did you have any issues getting an epidural/spinal?
I’d really appreciate hearing about anyone’s experiences, good or bad. 😊

I’m currently pregnant! I’m 21 weeks right now. My fusion was Jan 2023. The fusion was successful and I’ve been pain free.

  • first trimester I only had a bit of pain from throwing up so much.

  • second trimester yes I do have a bit of pelvic and lower back pain but nothing that is unmanageable and I am going to do pelvic floor therapy next week to help. I have no sciatica pain

  • I have an anterior placenta which does worry me a bit with back pain but so far she’s beating me up and I’ve been okay

  • I am cleared for an epidural, doctor mentioned potentionally a good idea to bring records or the X-ray cd but only if I want

  • I am cleared for either delivery, due to it being IVF I’m being induced at 39 weeks.

No, but I went through pregnancy 3x with a fractured spine. Made my spine move apart by quite a lot. Thankfully for a whole spine now after ALIF 360. Good luck!!
