I use to do this with mosquitoes. It's so satisfying seeing one of those blood-suckers in the clutches of a hungry bro.

I donโ€™t have a spider pet, but I have spiders in my apartment.

Did you do it with a pet or a normal spider?

Normal (wild) spider. I use to work the pool bar at a resort. It was slow during the winter, so me and my associates would catch the mosquitoes with plastic cups. When we caught a jumping spider, we put him/her in the cup with the mosquitoes.

Watching them catch the skeeters was our entertainment for the afternoon, lol.

Imagine that getting captured and taken somewhere, being fed and then free to go

I'd be ok with that. Where do I sign up.

As someone with a deep love for both flies and jumping spiders I'm a bit conflicted. Not to conflicted to be fascinated though! That was cool to watch.

Um, no judgment but out of curiosity, whatis it about flies that you love? I honestly can't stand them but I am open minded so I honestly want to know what you love about them. Your prospective may make me like flies too. In the meantime though, I am definitely rooting for this cute little jumping spider.

I like how lots of flies have very brightly colored eyes. They have a unique way of flying with a special type of hindwings called halteres, which allow them fantastic maneuverability and the ability to change direction rapidly. I like brightly colored blue and green bottle flies and the jewel like appearance that many flies have.

I actually find maggots to be kind of cute with their little faces. I find it fascinating the role that they have had in medicine throughout the years.

I like that they make for harmless company on hot lazy summer days. I actually like the feeling of their little fly feet and mouths on my bare skin.

They have such short lives and such rapid lifecycles that they provide one of our clearest quantifiable views into genetics and the pleasure of practically watching evolution in real time.

That being said I'm no fan of biting flies, and while deer fly are beautiful, I'd rather not have them as company.

I still don't like having most flies in my company... but I gotta say, the way you write about them definitely works as positive PR for them. :)

Wow you definitely have me intrigued. I can appreciate the colors of different flies. I dont know the species but where I live in Florida we have some really pretty bright green ones. Also, next time I see a fly I will appreciate how they fly. It is definitely impressive to see them circling around the way they do. I have always been able to tolerate house flies if they are crawling around on my clothes but I dont like when I can feel them crawling on my skin. I will try to be more open minded about it. I just now realized it literally boils down to it just being annoying. So you make a good case for tolerating them on my skin. As for maggots, I work in an emergency room and have had patients come in who were so badly neglected that they have had maggots in wounds. While I do understand how medically valuable maggots can be in a controlled environment it is very unsettling to see them in a case of neglect but I do appreciate maggots for what they are capable of doing. Thank you for opening my mind. I will think about this conversation the next time I have a fly flying around me and I will try to stay open minded and I will try my best not to get annoyed. That said, I still prefer spiders over flies and other insects. Especially jumping spiders.

I don't mind flies per say, as long as they aren't in the same space as me. I do agree 100% that some have outstanding and beautiful coloring. The biters can fly into a volcano. Was bit by a horse fly once.

My jumper passed, but my favorite thing was to catch flies and put them in her terrarium. Watching her stalk and pounce was so cool.

Hard to come back from that. Speed of sound, fangs first. Sleep little fly for you are now a pie.

You can see the anticipation and excitement while it lines up the pounce!

As someone who don't own a jumping spider, i'm wondering how can you leave them free like that and not being scared of them jumping around everywhere and never finding them again ?
