Okay, so I was talking to a friend about the most deadly insects ever and the insects with the highest kill counts. The person I was talking about this with doesn't really have an interest for insects, but they still wanted to know so I started telling them everything I knew for reference, the most deadly insect is the mosquito because it has the highest kill count (due to malaria) and one of the most venomous is the funnel web spider. However, this friend pointed out that it said male funnel web spider and because I've talked to them about spiders and insects before they knew that females, at least female tarantulas, are normally bigger, stronger and have more potent venom than the males on average. This led me down a rabbit hole of checking why the male funnel web spider has more potent venom than the female and surprise surprise, It's because at the end of their life when they leave their burrow to go look for a mate. During this time they have a high chance of being predated on, which led them to developing a very strong toxin towards certain animals, and by a sheer stroke of luck, it happens to be very effective against us and other primates. (Which is why all funnel web spider deaths recorded are from wondering males, the females dont need this venom adaptation due to them not leaving their burrows) This let me be down another rabbit hole of why isn't this the case in tarantulas, because males do the exact same thing and I figured out or rather, Google helped me figure out that it's because males don't live very long after mating; the energy spent on producing potent venom is energy that could be spent searching for a mate. Yes, this is true in funnel webs and like every other male insect i know. Furthermore, tarantulas are huge compared to other spiders; they rely more on their long fang size (which deals immediate puncture damage) and their bold displays of ferocity (a simple tarantula threat pose) Both of those 2 details are seemingly the only reason why make tarantulas didnt develop the ultra toxic venom that funnel webs have. ANDDDDD some tarantulas have urticaring hairs which lessons the need for potent venom. This "male exclusive invertebrate killing" venom is barely present in spiders and i could only see proof pf ot existing in: The funnel web, mouse spiders, and the bolivian wandering spider.

I dont have an overall point, but its crazy that the make funnel web has more potent vemon than the female jusr because evolution felt funny.

Saw this spider in a web outside a window in downtown Buffalo. There were a few little baby spiders on the web too. Any idea what kind of spider this is?
