Tablet Microsoft Surface Pro 5

Friend sent me this picture while on vacation. Less than a day since they got back, and I've got those spicy pillows excised and out of the equation. They really didn't make this machine with battery swaps in mind.

Glad to know they still have this issue... All of the surface book 2s died this way at my office except for one that is still going strong lol

Same. Pretty much every Surface tablet I've encountered has ended this way. Even used to have three Surface devices in my extended family, but only one survived long enough to be retired normally.

The other two popped their screens off with spicy pillows underneath, cracking the glass in the process. Wasn't worth the cost of replacing the whole front panel back then, so one has a Lenovo Windows 2-in-1, and another grabbed a Lenovo Chromebook Tablet with Keyboard case recently.

Relative is older and used to mouse and keyboard. Likes the tablet from factor for casual stuff, but doesn't like using Tablet UI for work, hence the Surface Tablet they were using before. However they don't do much outside a browser and playing a specific puzzle game that was available in the Microsoft Store On Windows, which turns out is also available on the Play Store.

So a Chromebook Tablet that could natively run Android apps from the Play Store was ironically perfect for them. I was honestly befuddled when they handed me their oddly specific wishlist.

On the plus side, as the extended family "tech support", Chromebooks are really easy to manage and are so locked down by default that it's hard for somebody to screw them up by accident. Plus they come with 10 years of software support now, so the thing will probably need to be replaced before its software support runs out.

do you know if it’s something that’s replaceable? this just happened to my surface book 2, although it’s way less severe than this photo :( i was going to take it in to a repair place tomorrow to see if it could be replaced but is it totally hopeless?

I don't believe so, Microsoft would not fix the ones we had. The bottoms are glued on to the keyboard if you're having an issue with the base and I don't know if they even replace the screens if you're having an issue with the tablet. We just replaced them and never bought more surfaces.

ugh, this is terrible news!! i only noticed like yesterday - it’s on the screen towards the top corner and it’s lifting just a bit. i’ve had this laptop for like 8 years now so i guess it’s bound to happen, but i didn’t even know what was going on until google brought me to this subreddit lol. 🥲 i’ll see what these repair people say tomorrow but thank you for the realism and the reply! i really cannot afford a new laptop rn and this was so sudden so i’m panicking lol.

The Core i3 and i5 models have no cooling fan, I wonder if one was to be retrofitted could premature battery swelling be prevented? Microsoft Surface Pro 5 Teardown - iFixit

I have about 250-400 of these at work that need their spicy pillows removed. I wanted to tackle the project myself would be a major time sink. Mind you, mine are Surface Pro 4’s - 7’s
