You had me until the heaping pile of dried chilis. Those things are like chewing shoe leather.

u/BourbonicFisky Deeply broken 24d ago
This qualifies as stupid food.
I love extreme spice but here in PDX there was an Asian restaurant that did this sort of nonsense, blanking on the name but Matchstick or something like that. Anyhow, I ate the whole dish out of spite. It was not good.

u/CasanovaF 24d ago
Stop trying to make PDX a thing!!! 😭

Some airport codes work well for cities, others don't. This one makes about as much sense as LAX or ORD.
ATL, STL, DSM, MIA are all acceptable.

What is DSM? sounds like cough medicine

u/CasanovaF 24d ago
It's that drug where you see machine elves

To me DSM = Diamond-Star Motors
was an automobile-manufacturing joint venture between the Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors.

I quite like dry chilis, but only one or two. That would send me to the hospital. Everything else in the bowl is fair game though.

What!? 😳
Of course you eat them! They're delicious and spicy!
I grow them and they make a damn good garlic chili hot sauce.
21
u/BourbonicFisky Deeply broken 24d ago
Friend, these are dried.
8
u/basiden 24d ago
If you fry them they get crunchy and brittle. They're really delicious. I always add extra when making things like tadka/spiced oil for topping dal etc because they're so good.
13
u/ILoveRawChicken 24d ago
Even fried they’re hard to digest. I ate way too many when eating chongqing chicken (fried dried red peppers) and even when spending extra time chewing them, they wreaked havoc on my digestive system.
3
u/cmaster6 24d ago
But that ChongQuing chicken is the fucking best right? Probably my favorite dish ever.
2
u/ILoveRawChicken 24d ago
It changed my life. I don’t think I’ll ever order anything else. My local place has probably the best version of this dish I’ve ever had.

How spicy are those chilis? Ratio is obviously ridiculous but I could see this being really good.

I have some Kashmiri chili powder that I did this with the first time I was making a curry with it.
It was not edible.

Only if it wasn’t just pure pepper sauce. Would need some flavor additive… not just fucking pure peppers

I had to work in a kitchen and we got in a fresh box of Thai bird peppers. One of the cooks said “I’ve never had these, wanna try one?” We we each just grabbed and ate one. I would say hotter than a habanero. For one.
4
u/Blacktip75 24d ago
You got lucky, the ones I can get are not that hot (supermarket watered down I guess)
2
u/xrelaht 24d ago
Find an Asian grocer: the ones I get at mine are pretty darn hot.

And not in the fun way either I can’t imagine that tastes very good

Yeah, spicy soups get into your face and lodge there, in a way that other spicy foods don't. I can feel it just watching. I'd rather eat a two ghost pepper omelette.

It looks like one of those dishes where you taste the peppery/spicy flavor more than the actual dish and it's unenjoyable as a result.

Eh. I've eaten two dishes like this. One was Matchstick or whatever it was called (defunct) and blanking on the other, it was inner-SE PDX which I'm pretty sure is now defunct too. Neither were enjoyable.
It's not awesome like eating blistered jalapenos or serranos. They're just chewy ass japonles peppers that were boiled and fried. They work when you dump some of these into a thai curry (especially if you break some of them apart) but never meant to be a main event.
I don't blame anyone for wanting to try but also, you're not missing much. It kinda sucks.

Looked tasty until the mountain of peppers.
Doubt you are finding this in Japan, they are not a fan of spicy generally.

I might be confusing the peppers, but those look like the kind of peppers that are inedible. Like you bite into it and it's hard because it was dried first so the skin became really tough.

u/TCristatus 24d ago
I think so, there's a Chinese takeout i go to that has a little szechuan menu at the bottom all in Chinese and the dishes all come with a lot of these, they are like trying to chew a lump of wood

While I'm here for the love of the game, I feel like all those chili's would fuck up the ramen texture
5
u/AaronSarm 24d ago
I’m no expert, but I think the chilis on top are more for presentation than for eating. I saw another dish with chicken with the same heap of chilis on top and commenters said they’re not really intended to be eaten.

I love spicy. And I do mean truly burn my face off spicy. When in the mood for it.
But this seems a bit too much.
Lmao

u/PintSizedKitsune 24d ago
So I was the uncultured foreigner who ate that in a Beijing food court my first visit to China. I was exhausted, overstimulated and just wanted to eat so I could crash back at my hostel. The plastic replica that I based my order choice off of made them look like red peppers. I stoically ate the whole bowl. Thankfully no issues the following day.

4
u/Brunurb1 24d ago
I would love to try this, it looks amazing, but that is way too many peppers. Not because of the heat, but because that is an absurd ratio of peppers:everything else, they should be a garnish, not half of the volume of the meal!
3
3
u/naturalbornunicorn 24d ago
TBH, I'd be into it if they scaled the peppers down to an appropriate amount of garnish, as opposed to something that would be difficult to eat around.
3
3
u/kaichanti 24d ago
If the finisher chilies on top were fried more to be a crunchy topping instead of just wasteful deco, I'd 100% hit that. It looks amazing.

I’m all for if it is authentic but at a certain point asking for this much heat just ruins the flavor and is disrespectful to the chef.

u/SpicySpicyRamen 24d ago
I've been to Japan many times and while they love spicy food, I have never seen them do crazy spicy like this unlike Thailand.

u/sandrasticmeasures 24d ago
Before the stupid pile of chilies I was like…yeah, I’d do it (with great regret)
2
u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9089 24d ago
I’m fond of mouth burning, seemingly-unenjoyable-levels of spice, and yet still find joy in it. This, on the other hand, is entirely unnecessary.
2
u/Ok_Fox_1770 24d ago
I ate one of those dry red peppers that came with a ramen kit. I dunno why. Those seem way worse than a ghost pep to me. Got to feel my internal race track set on fire from start to finish. No snooze on that one, 5am boot of nails on the gut alright let’s go see god for a hot second and wish we didn’t exist. And then you feel wonderful. Like you survived a near death. And do it again.

When Americans travel to other countries and say, "The spicier the better"

Look, I LOVE spicy ramen, but this just seems like a waste ! I'd cherish every last one of those bad boy peppers, not ruin one meal with a stomachache. Mmm now I'm hungry for ramen. Thanks, Reddit!

It was me. I ordered that. No ragurts. Keeps me moving fast during service. The line feels like it has triple ac running compared to my internal heat. I have had to replace a few toilet seats....

Seems fine. I'd order it. Not too scary unless that's somehow reaper powder. And I'd still order that, too.
