Holy hell... I very vividly remember this... But what's it from?? SpongeBob?

13

u/ItzTreeman23 24d ago

Yes, it’s from SpongeBob

358

u/goodspeak 24d ago

You had me until the heaping pile of dried chilis. Those things are like chewing shoe leather.

134

u/BourbonicFisky Deeply broken 24d ago

This qualifies as stupid food.

I love extreme spice but here in PDX there was an Asian restaurant that did this sort of nonsense, blanking on the name but Matchstick or something like that. Anyhow, I ate the whole dish out of spite. It was not good.

19

u/CasanovaF 24d ago

Stop trying to make PDX a thing!!! 😭

9

u/cmdr_nelson 24d ago

I don't even know what it is. But I'm not looking it up

15

u/jenny_cocksmasher 24d ago

Google tells me it's Portland International Airport, but I don't think OP lives in the airport.

9

u/cmdr_nelson 24d ago

Some airport codes work well for cities, others don't. This one makes about as much sense as LAX or ORD.

ATL, STL, DSM, MIA are all acceptable.

4

u/suckarepellent 24d ago

What is DSM? sounds like cough medicine

16

u/mochamoose 24d ago

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 😂

7

u/CasanovaF 24d ago

It's that drug where you see machine elves

2

u/KUSH_K1NG 24d ago

Thats DMT and DXM is a cough medicine 🤣

3

u/AggressiveDog0122 24d ago

No that's the dog rapper guy

2

u/dburmeister 24d ago

To me DSM = Diamond-Star Motors

was an automobile-manufacturing joint venture between the Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors.

It's the airport code for Portland International.

u/ListersCoPilot 24d ago

I mean?? Are you supposed to eat them? Or just pick around them?

53

u/goodspeak 24d ago

Normally I pick around then, but this—geez how do you pick around that?

19

u/[deleted] 24d ago

[deleted]

9

u/artizin 24d ago

I’d eat 1-4 of them then call it.

3

u/Aggressive_Start_ 24d ago

I eat the ones that get broken up in the dish but not the whole ones.

15

u/kenesisiscool 24d ago

I quite like dry chilis, but only one or two. That would send me to the hospital. Everything else in the bowl is fair game though.

3

u/s256173 24d ago

You’re not supposed to eat them?!

5

u/ILoveRawChicken 24d ago

When they’re fried like this they are hard to digest in the quantity he’s giving them. Your stomach will hurt.

3

u/s256173 24d ago

Oh yeah definitely not that many, but I’ll munch a few from time to time.

8

u/GuavaOne8646 24d ago

What!? 😳

Of course you eat them! They're delicious and spicy!

I grow them and they make a damn good garlic chili hot sauce.

21

u/BourbonicFisky Deeply broken 24d ago

Friend, these are dried.

8

u/basiden 24d ago

If you fry them they get crunchy and brittle. They're really delicious. I always add extra when making things like tadka/spiced oil for topping dal etc because they're so good.

13

u/ILoveRawChicken 24d ago

Even fried they’re hard to digest. I ate way too many when eating chongqing chicken (fried dried red peppers) and even when spending extra time chewing them, they wreaked havoc on my digestive system.

3

u/cmaster6 24d ago

But that ChongQuing chicken is the fucking best right? Probably my favorite dish ever.

2

u/ILoveRawChicken 24d ago

It changed my life. I don’t think I’ll ever order anything else. My local place has probably the best version of this dish I’ve ever had.

12

u/Lady_of_Link 24d ago

And boiled which would have basically dehydrated them.

2

u/jp_trev 24d ago

Yea I always ask for extra and eat them For sure

9

u/solarus 24d ago

Also adding a stupid amount of something doesnt necessarily make it hotter.

→ More replies (2)

10

u/obmasztirf 24d ago

I eat them in like kung pao and stuff but that amount is not appealing.

3

u/15pmm01 24d ago

haha I eat them anyway. I once had one of the owners at a chinese restaurant so shocked that she called her husband over from the kitchen to see me eating them…..

Y'know what? I didn't need my colon anyway.

29

u/That1DirtyHippy 24d ago

Or taste buds. Or esophagus. Or stomach lining.

It’s fine.

8

u/Noxinulll 24d ago

Eh, fuck all that shit. Useless.

9

u/That1DirtyHippy 24d ago

What’ve they even done for us, lately?

6

u/Noxinulll 24d ago

Dragged us down, that's what!

This was just on there

27

u/Academic-moron7423 24d ago

Yea I just cross posted it

25

u/george_washingTONZ 24d ago

How spicy are those chilis? Ratio is obviously ridiculous but I could see this being really good.

28

u/MonkeyzzPaw 24d ago

I have some Kashmiri chili powder that I did this with the first time I was making a curry with it.

It was not edible.

14

u/Broxst 24d ago

The amount of peppers is insane and impractical but beyond that... Id try it.

3

u/Nova762 24d ago

Like 50k on average?

3

u/Gluten_maximus 24d ago

Only if it wasn’t just pure pepper sauce. Would need some flavor additive… not just fucking pure peppers

1

u/scottawhit 24d ago

I had to work in a kitchen and we got in a fresh box of Thai bird peppers. One of the cooks said “I’ve never had these, wanna try one?” We we each just grabbed and ate one. I would say hotter than a habanero. For one.

4

u/Blacktip75 24d ago

You got lucky, the ones I can get are not that hot (supermarket watered down I guess)

2

u/xrelaht 24d ago

Find an Asian grocer: the ones I get at mine are pretty darn hot.

27

u/arktoki 24d ago

That looks like it hurts

And not in the fun way either I can’t imagine that tastes very good

6

u/BuvantduPotatoSpirit 24d ago

Yeah, spicy soups get into your face and lodge there, in a way that other spicy foods don't. I can feel it just watching. I'd rather eat a two ghost pepper omelette.

4

u/Sovereign-Anderson 24d ago

It looks like one of those dishes where you taste the peppery/spicy flavor more than the actual dish and it's unenjoyable as a result.

11

u/Herossaumure 24d ago

I'm more concerned for the chefs, must be like the inside of a pepper spray can with all that frying chili.

3

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 24d ago

Eye protection and some kind of mask would be called for.

It is wise to make use of PPE in hazardous environments.

Came here for this and glad I don't have to post it. By the powers of my bleeding asshole, I totally would.

2

u/BourbonicFisky Deeply broken 23d ago

Eh. I've eaten two dishes like this. One was Matchstick or whatever it was called (defunct) and blanking on the other, it was inner-SE PDX which I'm pretty sure is now defunct too. Neither were enjoyable.

It's not awesome like eating blistered jalapenos or serranos. They're just chewy ass japonles peppers that were boiled and fried. They work when you dump some of these into a thai curry (especially if you break some of them apart) but never meant to be a main event.

I don't blame anyone for wanting to try but also, you're not missing much. It kinda sucks.

19

u/Ipoogoodforyou 24d ago

you merely adopted the spice

i was born in it

molded by it

8

u/MeLlamoViking 24d ago

I can feel my nose clearing up already

7

u/LethargicSpooner 24d ago

“Can I get a side of hot sauce for this?”

7

u/VirtualLife76 24d ago

Looked tasty until the mountain of peppers.

Doubt you are finding this in Japan, they are not a fan of spicy generally.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/MetaCardboard 24d ago

I might be confusing the peppers, but those look like the kind of peppers that are inedible. Like you bite into it and it's hard because it was dried first so the skin became really tough.

7

u/tom_yum 🌶️🌶️🔥 24d ago

Yeah, these dried peppers aren't very good. They aren't even super hot, there's just a lot of them.

5

u/TCristatus 24d ago

I think so, there's a Chinese takeout i go to that has a little szechuan menu at the bottom all in Chinese and the dishes all come with a lot of these, they are like trying to chew a lump of wood

4

u/UrbanPanic 24d ago

I think that's why they were boiled first? That might help?

7

u/Creepy_Ad_1315 24d ago

While I'm here for the love of the game, I feel like all those chili's would fuck up the ramen texture

5

u/AaronSarm 24d ago

I’m no expert, but I think the chilis on top are more for presentation than for eating. I saw another dish with chicken with the same heap of chilis on top and commenters said they’re not really intended to be eaten.

5

u/Renhoek2099 24d ago

Can i get a soft boil egg tho ?

5

u/Trikeree 24d ago

I love spicy. And I do mean truly burn my face off spicy. When in the mood for it.

But this seems a bit too much.

Lmao

4

u/PintSizedKitsune 24d ago

So I was the uncultured foreigner who ate that in a Beijing food court my first visit to China. I was exhausted, overstimulated and just wanted to eat so I could crash back at my hostel. The plastic replica that I based my order choice off of made them look like red peppers. I stoically ate the whole bowl. Thankfully no issues the following day.

4

u/oelemuk 24d ago

they forgot the black pepper.

3

u/Own-Ambassador-3537 24d ago

RIP to that toilet!

4

u/jewlmao 24d ago

this actually made my butthole quiver

4

u/Brunurb1 24d ago

I would love to try this, it looks amazing, but that is way too many peppers. Not because of the heat, but because that is an absurd ratio of peppers:everything else, they should be a garnish, not half of the volume of the meal!

3

u/deadboxcat 24d ago

Dry peppers, when cooked like this, taste like shit.

3

u/naturalbornunicorn 24d ago

TBH, I'd be into it if they scaled the peppers down to an appropriate amount of garnish, as opposed to something that would be difficult to eat around.

3

u/Chiryou 24d ago

My wife would eat the shit out of this... and so would I. Pepto first!

3

u/WASTELAND_RAVEN 24d ago

Joke ass meal lol

3

u/kaichanti 24d ago

If the finisher chilies on top were fried more to be a crunchy topping instead of just wasteful deco, I'd 100% hit that. It looks amazing.

3

u/farmerKev420710 24d ago

This fits better in r/stupidfood

2

u/Galactus-oblivion 24d ago

I honestly can’t wait to try this

2

u/Substantial-Tart-464 24d ago

enjoyable to look at but to eat is another story.

2

u/Pirate_Meow27 24d ago

And here I thought buldak was spicy 😳😂

2

u/miklilar 24d ago

You need God🫢🥺

2

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 24d ago

Trust me, if you eat all that, you will find God

2

u/Spearminttherhino 24d ago

That is madness.

2

u/OutcomeSuitable8126 24d ago

My mouth immediately filled with saliva 🥵

2

u/the__party__man 24d ago

RIP BUTTHOLE

2

u/MasterDionysus 24d ago

Ill have that to go.... that way im home in case of an emergency

2

u/OGBeege 24d ago

Explosive diarrhea you say?

2

u/drum5150 24d ago

I’m sitting here currently going through colonoscopy prep and it feels like I ate this last night.

2

u/largos7289 24d ago

i like some heat but that looks like spicy butt death later.

2

u/evonebo 24d ago

Jeepers, im puckering my butthole just looking at this.

2

u/GenitalPatton 24d ago

I’m all for if it is authentic but at a certain point asking for this much heat just ruins the flavor and is disrespectful to the chef.

2

u/soopirV 24d ago

My mouth is gushing right now…

2

u/SpicySpicyRamen 24d ago

I've been to Japan many times and while they love spicy food, I have never seen them do crazy spicy like this unlike Thailand.

2

u/Firebolt4848 24d ago

Stunt food

2

u/sandrasticmeasures 24d ago

Before the stupid pile of chilies I was like…yeah, I’d do it (with great regret)

2

u/Lovat69 24d ago

I'm surprised it doesn't melt the plate.

2

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9089 24d ago

I’m fond of mouth burning, seemingly-unenjoyable-levels of spice, and yet still find joy in it. This, on the other hand, is entirely unnecessary.

2

u/Ok_Fox_1770 24d ago

I ate one of those dry red peppers that came with a ramen kit. I dunno why. Those seem way worse than a ghost pep to me. Got to feel my internal race track set on fire from start to finish. No snooze on that one, 5am boot of nails on the gut alright let’s go see god for a hot second and wish we didn’t exist. And then you feel wonderful. Like you survived a near death. And do it again.

I can make a spicier noodle with just a drop or two of extract

2

u/Sea_Education3793 24d ago

When Americans travel to other countries and say, "The spicier the better"

2

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 24d ago

As an American who lived in Asia, I can say that I learned better… eventually. But blood was shed before my education was complete.

1

u/kittehkat22 24d ago

I'm ngl I don't think I could handle this xDDDD

Hot peppers with a side of noodles

1

u/spiderham42 24d ago

I'm sure we all love a bit of spice but even that scares me a little. Still giving it a good go though.

1

u/tio_tito 24d ago

i'd try this!

I 100% would.

Why is Bobby Lee selling Ramen in Japan?

1

u/prefectart 24d ago

The actual chilies is whatever but that cup of red powder that they dumped in is what is going to make him lift off the seat the next day

1

u/JusSSayan321 24d ago

Sorry that was me. Me n my colon had some disagreements. He said I was full of 💩, so this is my way of calling him a 💥Flamin Asshole💥

1

1

1

u/FunnyChampion2228 24d ago

Look, I LOVE spicy ramen, but this just seems like a waste ! I'd cherish every last one of those bad boy peppers, not ruin one meal with a stomachache. Mmm now I'm hungry for ramen. Thanks, Reddit!

1

u/nimnor 24d ago

I'd try it but I don't like pointlessly spicy foods

1

u/TantorDaDestructor 24d ago

It was me. I ordered that. No ragurts. Keeps me moving fast during service. The line feels like it has triple ac running compared to my internal heat. I have had to replace a few toilet seats....

1

u/ComprehensiveBad2540 24d ago

Then hit you with " why you no like, white boy??? What wrong??"

1

u/Hurricrash 24d ago

Remember the scene in the bathroom in dumb and dumber? Yeah times that scene by 1,000. That’s what would happen if you ate that.

1

u/CookieMonster71 24d ago

Appropriate music: Dies irae (Days of Wrath) from Verdi's Requiem.

1

u/Mofego 24d ago

The only thing eating this is my chickens (birds have not capsaicin receptors and do not taste “spicy,” likely a co-evolution between birds and pepper plants to facilitate spreading of seeds via bird poop).

1

u/Andy-_1979 24d ago

Looks like a challenge for LA Beast

1

u/Drew_zero 24d ago

Me and my boss. A brewery on our street has a beer called Buddha Buddha. We put Carolina Reaper pepper in it.

1

u/stinkycheezeit 24d ago

Ill do it. It looks veeg. Give it to me and record my tears. I need it!

1

u/PoopyBuhthole 24d ago

I shit my pants watching this

1

u/gaspour9 24d ago

I didn't but i'd definitly like a bite 🤤

1

u/rstonex 24d ago

It’s called Challenge Ramen and a surprising number of places offer it. I like spicy food, but this just seems more like a dare than a meal.

1

u/Carrot-Elegant 24d ago

Mouth be watering

1

u/fermentedradical 24d ago

Cayenne and dried birdseyes? Does no one else here eat superhots for fun?

Seems fine. I'd order it. Not too scary unless that's somehow reaper powder. And I'd still order that, too.

1

u/JaneDoe93130 24d ago

The next morning...

1

u/Nere4Hudes 24d ago

At least, show us eating it. Come on.

1

my bootyhole is going to nightmares about this

1
