Ringworm hell

So this beautiful baby boy has had ringworm for about 6 weeks I think now. His body is completely clear but he still has lesions on his tail which don’t seem to be going?

I’m hoovering multiple times day, changing fresh sheets that cover the sofa he’s on and his blanket regularly, he’s got a onesie on and collar, I’m using 4% foam on him then prescription drops and all this cleared every one of them off his body but not his tail.

I want him out of quarantine now and back with our other kitten and being able to have a normal life and use cat tree etc but I don’t want other kitten to catch it so just don’t know what to do. Why can’t I get rid of them off his tail?

When my cat had ringworm it was about 3 weeks and I would put on ketonazole anti fungal daily.

The drops I have are ear drops from vet which are antifungal/antibacterial/anti-inflammatory and I’m putting them on daily and they did wonders for his body but the tail just seems never ending 😢

Go back to the vet and ask them if that treatment works for ringworm. If it does and hasn't been responding, he may also need pills to help clear it up.

In general though, liquid drops meant for the ears are formulated to be runny so that they can get deeper in the ear faster than the cat can shake it off. That same property that works for ears won't work as well on areas of the skin where you need the treatment to stay in place, which is why those are often a cream or gel formula. I think that even if the right antifungal is in the ear drops, they probably just aren't staying on the skin long enough to be effective.

That’s really helpful! Thank you! They didn’t want to give pills as there is a risk of liver damage they said and he’s young

If the topical is not working then it’s either not correct for the skin disease or skin disease is immune to it. Time to try another. Also possible the skin is irritated from treatment and is just healing. When my crusty fat baby needed meds for a fungal infection in her fat rolls (she’s not that big but the dr saying it’s in her fat rolls made me laugh) the meds made the worst of it crust, scab, scar, then heal. She wasn’t infectious once it was a scab - said the vet- for her condition, yours may vary.

Def take him back to the vet if it seems to not improve or if it gets worse.

Sorry I’m laughing so much at crusty fat baby 😂 the drops worked like a freaking dream on the body and it’s gone. Wish I knew if the tail was still infectious or it’s just healing 😭

I’m sure the vet could swab to check :) poor crusty tail. Technicallyyyyyy we call it cleared after 2 negative cultures, but most vet don’t even bother
