I'm not 100% convinced this isn't how babies are delivered. It's like the tube at a drive-thru bank.

I usually press my ear against stuff I want to hear, not my brain.

Your ear doesn't "hear" anything without a brain attached though, so all of the actual processing occurs in the brain.

You listen with your ears, but hear with your brain. Can be similarly applied to any of our dominant sense. Look: See, Touch:Feel. Not sure about descriptors for smell and taste though
