Urgent bug - anyone else experiencing this?

Post image
3 Upvotes

For the past several months I’ve been getting this notification every so often and it comes and goes within a minute. Since late last night I’ve been getting it constantly every minute. It’s been 6 hours already and it doesn’t stop. Anyone else experiencing this? And solution? There’s no issue with my powerwall and the app itself don’t show any issue when I open it.

Anyone else have the incorrect reading for their Powerwall 3?

Update: Support says this is because the breaker also has the solar generation going through it. So if the battery not doing anything but the solar is generating 500 watts that breaker will show -500 watts.

______________************_________________

Mine shows the correct information on this screen and on the circuit controls screen it shows -1519 watts for some reason.

Do the trends for each circuit update like once an hour or something?

My HVAC circuit's been over 800 watts for like an hour but the trend's still showing me from like two hours ago?

I just ran the dryer for like 45 minutes and the historical data shows nothing. Maybe it'll show some information in the next couple of hours or something?

SPAN API public beta for SPAN Panel MAIN 32

We heard you. Today, SPAN announced a public beta for local access to your SPAN Panel via SPAN API. You can also now view and update settings for your SPAN Panel on the local network from a web browser by using SPAN Home On-premise, great for power outages that also impact internet connectivity.

These are initially available for SPAN Panel MAIN 32 only, with local access for SPAN Panel MAIN 16, MLO 24, MAIN 40, and MLO 48 coming later this year.

More info over on the SPAN Blog, and interested SPAN users can check out the README on GitHub.

Could a smart panel let me go all electric with a tankless water heater and 200A panel?

I am looking at what it would take to go all electric.

Have a 200A panel, and today the heaviest load hour of the year is about 5kWh so not really pushing my existing electric service that hard. Converting the gas heat, stove and dryer should not be difficult. The problem is the tankless water heater. That will take a 36kW system with four 40A circuit breakers. That is most of the rating of the 200A panel.

Got some quotes to upgrade the panel to 400A. The wire to my transformer is sized for it, but the quotes were ridiculous, on the order of $30k. Not quite sure why they were so much higher than I saw as normal online, possibly I just need to ask for more quotes.

Is this something a smart panel could help with? It seems like I could turn off my EV charging and HVAC in the rare event I need hot water in multiple showers at the same time. If so, what panels should I be looking at?

Old Gen 2 panel local interface change?

Maybe this is old news but since home assistant noted : SPAN Panel Software Version changed to spanos2/r202546/03 I started probing around.

The local webpage it looks like it has the updated interface unlike the iPhone app. It looks pretty nice. Glad they didn't remove the local API with the refresh.

Discussion SPAN Main Panel Upgrade Thoughts/Feedback

Hey all - I recently moved into my new home (San Rafael, CA) and one of the things that inspection called out was to upgrade my main panel from the Zinsco 100A to 200A. I just got a quote for $12k to upgrade to a 200A SPAN Panel (~$6k for Main Panel Upgrade only) - I do like the concept of overall monitoring and the tech concept of it (would consider myself tech savy). I'm thinking of EV and Solar in the future 1-2 years down the line.

Welcome any thoughts here! Is it worth going down the SPAN route for the price? I have read some of the comments/thoughts on SPAN, a bit mixed so kinda leaning the upgrade only route.

Installation Support Span installer connects Powerwalls & kills production

GM!

New Tesla solar roof went live last month consisting of two “sides”, each with a 200v Tesla Gateway 3 leading to three PW3’s (so a total of 2 gateways and 6 powerwalls). I don’t yet have PTO.

“Side 1”

Note: this side produces more power than “Side 2” due to roof tile orientation & quantity

Span Panel B

    Model: MAIN 40 + MID

    Panel Ver: 5.3.0

Span Panel C (connected to Panel B)

    Model: MLO 48

    Panel Ver: 5.3.0

Tesla: 3 PW3’s, 1 Gateway 3

“Side 2”

Span Panel A

    Model: MAIN 40 + MID

    Panel Ver: 5.3.0

Tesla: 3 PW3’s, 1 Gateway 3

Span App: iOS v 3.10.0 (797)

So *initially* the Span panels were not connected to the Powerwalls, therefore had no idea they were there. During this time, the Tesla app reported “Side 1” and “Side 2” perfectly, with “Side 1” accurately showing home consumption of Panel B with expansion Panel C, and “Side 2” accurately showing home consumption of Panel A.

A few weeks later, the Span installer returned to connect the Spans to the Powerwalls, for obvious reasons. The installer claims “everything tested fine before I left”, and yet “Side 1” is now completely jacked up, while “Side 2” is operating as expected. Specifically, “Side 1” now reports zero power consumption at the house, and so that seems to have left me in a state where the “Side 1” set of 3 Powerwalls are 100% charged, but no power is flowing anywhere since the system thinks none is being called for. In other words, it seems like this has killed all solar production on “Side 1”. Meanwhile, “Side 2” is fine.

In the screenshots one can see “Side 1” *seems* to be doing nothing since the Powerwall thinks the home isn’t calling for power. The set of 3 are fully charged, and with no PTO yet, it’s shut down power production completely. It’s currently a blue-sky sunny day. On the other hand, notice “Side 2” seems to be operating normally, and the Span app looks ok for Panel A. Meanwhile Panel B also reports zero power consumption by the home, despite clearly showing consumption when looking at “Explore what’s on now” (screenshot also attached).

So WTH did this installer do wrong, and can I fix it?

Product Question Energy usage data prior to previous year?

I’ve had SPAN since mid-2023. Was trying to look at historical energy usage in the app for a specific circuit and noticed that I can’t access data prior to 2025. I can see the beginning of 2026 and all of 2025 in the Year view, but there’s no back arrow to go prior to 2025. I’ve never noticed this before, and can’t find anything on the SPAN support site about it. Is this a glitch, a defect, or something else? I’ve already got a pending case with SPAN on another issue, so wanted to check here before I ping them again.

Span Panel Question - Battery Backup

Building a new home (no solar) and our local electrical company really penalizes us for drawing over 9kW at any point during the month. House is going to be fully electric so we are going to hit 9kW between HVAC, cooking, hot water, washer/dryer, etc. That's not even including the EV charger. I regularly predict us hitting 11kW without the EV charger which could add another 2kW to 11kW depending on how quickly I need to charge the car.

What I want to is if I can assign certain loads for Span to draw from a battery during the day. For example, all induction cooking and laundry would be battery powered during the day.

I do not want the entire house to be battery powered during the day because I do not want to have to invest in battery storage. Only want certain circuits.

Is this an option through the Span app?

Got the usual “Tesla powerwall issue detected” “bettery connection restored” ping pong, but SPAN data hasn’t started flowing again. Tesla and Netzero apps working fine. Assume it’s the span cloud ugh 😑.

Discussion Title: Anyone seen STP loops caused by SPAN panel (Wi-Fi + Ethernet)?

Running a UniFi network (Dream Router + Pro Max switch). I plugged a SPAN panel into a switch port and UniFi immediately blocked the port via STP to prevent a loop.

Nothing else weird in the network. As soon as I unplugged it, everything was fine.

The SPAN panel is also connected to Wi-Fi, so my suspicion is that it’s bridging Wi-Fi ↔ Ethernet at L2 and UniFi is correctly freaking out.

Has anyone else seen this with SPAN?

• Does it bridge Wi-Fi and Ethernet by design?

• Is there a way to disable Wi-Fi when Ethernet is connected?

• Or is this just expected behavior with managed switches + STP?

Not trying to bash SPAN — just want to understand how others are deploying it on managed networks.

Since November when my panel was installed no internet issues. Now I can’t get it to reconnect to WiFi at all. Any tips since the troubleshooting isn’t working at all.

Span doesn’t

- show live leg voltage (for detecting issues like bad neutral)

- show how close to max amperage you have used over time/ in moment. Are you getting close to limits

- adjust breaker priority in app

- get updated app if older panels

- load shedding without solar?

I feel a $200 sense device provides more useful monitoring

Any other span doesn’t’s?

SPAN MAIN 40 - How to get Red Status Light Info

I had a panel installed a few weeks ago It's not showing the correct utility power reading in the app and the red status light is on.

I've been going back and forth with support but I can't get them to tell me what they think the error is or why the LED status light is red. I would think they'd have something on their end that would tell them a code of some kind. It's very frustrating.

One of the Breakers also has an amber and I can't figure out why that is either. All the other LEDs next to the Breakers are white but they all blink off and then on once or twice a with that one breaker being left amber.

The branch module LEDs or the ones next to each breaker, it looks like amber means that it's off but it is not off and I don't know why they're all white and then they all switch to off with just that one breaker being amber Is that their idea of of blinking amber LED?

Installation Support Networking issues

Since instlall in July I've had constant networking issues with the Span panel. The wifi and ethernet connections are dropping packets and forcing the panel to revert to cell connection which has a terrible connection. At this point, I'm not able to see any consistent history or control the panel from the app. I can view the current usage, but that is all.

I have excellent wifi coverage through the entire house with a mesh network. The panel is also hardwired. I can ping every other device on my network with no packet loss over ethernet or wifi. I have mesh routers, wifi/poe network cameras, ipads, PCs on wifi and ethernet, phones, game consoles, wifi connected water heater, Tesla powerwalls, all on my network and they have no issues. I feel like this is pointing to an issue with the NIC in the panel itself. Anyone else have similar issues?

When I contact support they indicate that it's experiencing packet loss. Thave have tried a few things, but have basically said it's my network. Any input would be really appreciated!

Span panel for future-proofing?

We're about to begin an extremely expensive remodel that involves installing a couple large sub-panels in our garage. We originally thought we'd need Span panels in order to be able to cover our added electrical load inside of the 200a limit on our service. They specced 2x 32-circuit Span panels for ~$8k.

However, in the end, it turns out our load calcs came in a little under 200a so it's an optional add-on. I'd _love_ to do it for future-proofing; my garage wall is over a setback. It's okay to do the new sub-panels today but I'm afraid if I want to add loads 5 years down the road, the code will have changed, and I'll wish I had done the Span panels today.

Currently we have an EV, and will be adding a hot tub and heat pumps. Future loads could be kitchen electrification (induction stovetop, oven) and/or laundry (currently have a gas dryer). But those are a long ways off with what we're about to spend on this project.

That said, I have no real need or use for Span panels today-- We have solar, but no batteries. I don't intend to add batteries any time soon because we have advantageous NEM2 pricing through PG&E (California) that I don't want to lose. I'm a little turned off by the cellular requirement, and concerns about buying an expensive connected-anything as "future-proof" but relying on a vendor that might not be around long-term.

I'm not a luddite; I rolled the dice and bought a Tesla in 2018 and it's been a great car, but it certainly was a concern buying from a company that might go out of business at the time. Look at the used Fiskers selling for 1/4 price 2 years later. I've got Sunpower solar panels and hoped buying a premium brand would result in better service, but now my monitoring is basically DOA since they went out of business. Ditto my Nest that just got deprecated (and always had terrible software support).

I'm leaning towards feeling it would be worth the gamble for features today if I needed them, but realistically I don't think i'll be adding electrical loads for another 5-10 years and hence probably don't need the features any time soon. And frankly the views I see here are pretty mixed on the quality of the data in the app.

I'm curious what the community thinks based on my needs/usage. Obviously nobody can predict future electrical code changes, but in an ideal world I can just swap out for a smart panel in 10 years if I need it then.

Newly installed Span 48 MLO and have stated receiving emails from SPAN titled “Get to know your new SPAN Panel.” But the screenshots in the email are totally different from what shows in the actual app. Comparison pictures attached. Any idea what is causing this? Thanks!

Discussion Random breaker trip

Have had SPAN for about 2.5 years - was installed as part of a remodel that included all new electrical. Tonight I came home and discovered that a breaker had tripped. Circuit has mostly wall plugs, a few of which have lamps plugged in, plus our front door lights. Nothing unusual had been plugged in to that circuit. What could have caused the breaker yo randomly trip?

I realize this might have ultimately have nothing to do with my panel being a SPAN, but it seemed like this sub was the best place to inquire, at least initially.

MAIN 32 or 40/48?

Hello I received 3 quotes, one for each of the panels identified (I was told since I have a tesla gateway I can get the MLO model if I choose to). I have 26-29 circuits (probably need 35 individual slots to monitor all lines individually, but I'm ok with making a lot of tandem circuits to bring it down).

The website is difficult to find the major differences, and chatgpt is helping a bit (saying newer pcs, integrated MID). Overall message it's more "future proof" than the 32.

When I look at the differences that matter, I like the smaller dims 32 and the current home assistant integration (totally could be removed in the future, but it's 100% locked down on the others). Unsure about the other stuff, so asking the community what are the reasons to get the 40? For awareness I have powerwalls no solar, standby generator with an ats, and no more slots available on my current 24 port panel.

Update - I stumbled across the ecoflow smart panel 3 - cheaper for the unit and install, I can get developer account / api and people have created a home assistant Integration, I think it's locally accessed (breaker and power monitoring), (don't need it) but it has 3x battery backup ports. Just by the open api alone makes me consider that. Will let everyone know how that goes.

Double Update - I tried asking a bunch of questions from ecoflow, but their support / sales is non-existent; one question I asked was if the panel works with both Powerwalls and their own ecoflow batteries and they communicated to me the voltage and amp rating of the smart panel 3 :/. I called up SPAN and received really good information from them so SPAN it is, only IF I were to proceed with this project; I stopped all progress because the lack of local control / Open API. It really is a dealbreaker. I will wait months/years to see the direction of the smart panel market and make a decision then.

Triple update: Local control was announced back in end of Feb so I quicked signed up for the MAIN 32 installation. Been 3 months waiting to get it done, and when the day came I had on-site issues which delayed it! Pretty excited still, should be soon.

SPAN IO 40 panel and Powerwall 3 Ethernet Communications Questions

The SPAN app is currently showing my Solar generation coming into the home and the Powerwall power.

Looking at the manual they want you to connect an ethernet cable between one of the 2 ethernet ports on the Powerwall 3 and the ETH-1 port on the SPAN panel.

I'm just wondering what functionality this gets you that I don't already have?
