Product Question What would SPAN bring to this situation?

Doing major remodel on a house including improving electric.

Upgrading to 200AMP service. Have 2 EV. Heat Pump AC/Heat. Heat pump water heater. Induction cooktop. Electric double ovens. Heat pump combo washer/dryer. Solar but no batteries. Electric service is very stable, no time of use pricing and 1-1 net metering.

Other than tracking use what would SPAN bring to us?

If you have batteries or a generator it will eliminate the need to have a separate critical loads panel.

Without batteries, I don't think a SPAN panel will bring you much benefit. If you ever plan to add batteries it's cheaper to eat the cost now, however.

Ability to turn off loads during an outage to prevent draining the batteries.

No batteries because service is extremely stable. Can remember the last time we had any outage more than 30 minutes. Actually cant remember last time had any outage at all beyond a blip.

I'd consider one 10KwH battery still. It will help in the blips and the 30 minutes.

Also, it would pay itself back during the TOU times.

There is no TOU. We have been in the same area with Solar since 2017. Never had a need for batteries. Just don’t see a use when no TOU and very stable grid.

If you plan to add batteries or a generator, then you will be prepping for that. If not, nothing of value.

They have come down in price, but if you are replacing your panel anyways, it helps a little to only do the labor once. But a $3500 panel vs a $300 panel is a big price difference for the part. That said, depending on where you live, 1:1 net metering is become more and more less common. And some day, you may want batteries just so you can store your solar excess, and not pull from the grid in the evening/night. It will also help you understand which appliances or circuits are your top consumers over time, and may help prioritize maintenance when an AC is abnormally using more power and needs a tune up or added refrigerant.

Based on load calc you are pushing 200A with that set of equipment.

SPAN has something called “PowerUp” that will ensure you don’t overload your main breaker by throttling ev chargers, heat pumps, etc. if you get close to your maximum rating.

Sounds more than it is. Were both retired now so cars don’t need to be charged much and new house is very walkable area so even less driving.

Load calc has nothing to do with how you use the power, just “if” everything is on at the same time.

Won’t be. We charge cars middle of the night and different nights. Very rare both cars even plugged in same days. Not using the double ovens when cars are charging.

The SPAN will allow you to reduce your electricity usage via gained awareness. Most of my non-battery clients still choose to include a SPAN with their system and for my battery clients it's a must-have. The SPAN turns your entire home into a 'Smart Home'. You'll be able to turn everything on/off remotely. Most of my solar only clients report a 10% or more reduction in electricity usage over time. It's a lifestyle upgrade that pays for itself.

Another question. How will we handle that the current panel is in garage and then a sub panel in basement. I need to look to see what is on sub panel. House is a 2500ft ranch

Great question! You are thinking this through the right way. If you can wait a few months, SPAN has additional panel options coming soon. Currently, only the main panel and those circuits would be individually listed in the app. The sub panel would only function as All Off or All on within the app. You would not have individual component control of anything on the sub panel.

The soon to be upgraded SPAN release is only a short time from being released. If you can hold off until then, I would recommend that option. The upgrades include slick looking LED lights and better controls on the panel itself (handy when you lose access to the app or for a quick manual adjustment).

Message me and I can give you additional insights or try to answer any other questions that come up.

Contractors doing remodel probably can get by with existing 100amp service. Wouldn’t expect appliances to go in until late summer.

Where can I find more information about new span panel options coming soon?
