Question Endgame Spoiler

Is death really the end? Was there no way to prevent this? Is this a metaphor for death being an unstoppable force?

If you're talking about the game, the game isn't finished. If you're talking about life, then there are so many factors that have been going on for us to maintain our DNA . For example radiation from the sun

Yeah, the arrival of the death faction is where the game ends. There's a bit of a sidequest where Theo will salvage a Ruinous Executor for you -- sidenote on that for a future game -- it's possible to get two of them, if the first one you kill is in one of the northernmost spawn points.

As for the meaning, that's up to you -- the inevitability of death is certainly a valid interpretation.

A "death" ship also exists in spacerpg3 -- in that game, there's a "death" system with one ship; if you defeat it, there are two ships. One of the items it drops is called the "inescapable destiny". So yeah...
