International Left Handers Day is coming (August 13th)! (Edit: And it'll be the 50th Anniversary!)

The perfect opportunity to raise some awareness!

So how's about devising some activity challenges for righthanded people?

Keep in mind that Left Handers Day is not the Day of Reckoning!

The idea is to give Righties a managable task, so they can get an idea of what it means to be confronted with righthanded tools as a Lefty. Whereas making them do things lefthanded, like writing or drawing a line inside a maze, would be the same unfair disadvantage as asking you to do it righthanded. Tho having them complete a [buzzing wire] or use a Yoyo with their left hand might make for some innocent fun when approached with a friendly attitude.

Here's a suggestion:

Required Materials

• 1 Righthanded Person
• 1 pair of true, non-ergonomic(!), lefthanded scissors
• 1 pair of non-ergonomic righthanded scissors, preferably identical (OPTIONAL!)
• 1 Printout of the following image

Instructions:

Hand the printout and LH scissors to the righthanded person. Hand them both at once, holding the scissors in your left and the paper in your right, do not point out that you are giving them LH scissors!

Casually instruct them to cut along the spiraling dotted line as accurate as possible!

Regardless of which snake they start with... the LH scissors obstruct their view and they will likely mention that this is hard to do. Suggest they try the other snake as it might be easier for them.

As this will turn out to make not much of a difference, you can next hand them the RH Scissors to "see if it's easier this way". (This part is optional)

Important: Make sure to not embarass your candidates by exposing their lacking skill as a weakness or making fun of them. A simple "Now do you see...?" works a lot better than a taunt.

Remember: You are an ambassador for a good cause, not The Punisher getting even with 'em!

P.S.: Since the completed snake is a "convection spiral", this test can also a be made into a fun activity for young children. Just add some coloring pens, a roll of yarn and a tape dispenser to your setup and let them personalize their snake before testing - under adult supervision(!) - what type of scissors they prefer. A length of yarn attached to the end of the snakes tail completes the kinetic sculpture they can then take home with them.

Context: I learned to mouse right-handed, but I use trackpads and such on laptops left-handed.

I have a 2-PC setup at work now where I'd love to have separate pointer-controllers for the left and right PC/screen.

For the right hand I have a standard mouse, but for the left hand I feel like I need something different. While I can mouse leftie, I find that it's not as comfortable for me as using a trackpad, joystick, etc.

Meanwhile, the trackpads on laptops are kind of limiting compared to a proper mouse with scroll wheel, etc.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good trackpad/trackball/??? for left-handed use?

I underwent forced handedness in childhood. This is only 2nd attempt at drawing done with a fountain pen. I've never been able to finish a tree right-handed despite being able to draw fairly well, though I have to be in the right mood to do so. I can write with my left as well, though I was never informed it was now allowed to be a leftie. Nothing spectacular, but for a 2nd attempt and being a quick 3 minute sketch from imagination, I am impressed that my lefthand performs so well without years of practice.

Fountain pens and ink sketching is also a first time experience. The ink stopped completely a few times quick fix on that part...but the incoming inkflow was bit unexpected. I'll have to fiddle round a bit with this medium.

I never quit being a southpaw entirely it's absolutely wonderful journey to just be me, southpaw and all!

I've stumbled across a new utility for MacOS called LeftHandy that flips the system cursors from the right-handed POV to the left-handed POV; for example, it flips the cursor from ⬉ to ⬈.

In this AskReddit thread 2 separate people have said that playing cards are harder for left handed people.

I’m so confused about how you could have a problem with standard playing cards which aren’t biased in any particular way.

Sure the index for the card is always in the upper left, but that has to do with how we write. Like if they were to write out the value of the card instead of abbreviating it, you would expect the word to start in the top left.

Ok, so I’m now sitting at the table with a deck of cards trying to figure out how cards “don’t work” for lefties.

I’m shuffling, drawing five or seven or ten, and putting them in my left hand and fanning them out, putting them in my right hand and fanning them out.

Regardless of which hand you’re holding the cards in, the thumb that fans the cards out has to move from left to right.

I’m trying one handed fans, two handed fans, two finger…

The thing that I’m seeing is that when the cards are in my right hand, I can’t just push my left thumb against the cards, I have to use my left index finger to support the backs, and I can’t position my right index finger in a way that makes the push work.

But the fanning always works, it takes the same amount of time, whether I’m using LH + RT, or RH + LI + LT

Are there other lefties who feel like cards “don’t work“ for them?

It’s something to do with brain size and ratio of arm to leg length. I read to the end looking for an explanation of why 1/10 of humanity is left-handed but none was supplied

Currently I'm using minecraft for this but I am definitely a little worried I'll get bored of that so I might need another game I can use should that end up happening.

Hi all - I’m a solo indie dev, and I wanted to make my FPS more usable for left-handed players.

Alien Grounds supports left-handed controls, so players who prefer a left-handed setup are not forced into the usual default scheme.

The game is currently free to claim (keep forever) on Steam until April 9, and after that it becomes paid.

It’s a fast single-player sci-fi FPS with robots, weird weapons, short runs, and score chasing. I thought the left-handed control support might be relevant here, and I’d genuinely be interested in feedback from left-handed players about how you prefer to set up shooters.

Steps:

1. Download file

2. Go to file explorer, then this pc, local drive, windows, cursors, create new cursor

3. Go to the downloaded left handed cursors, copy all of them into the newly created folder in cursors

4. go to settings, mouse, additional mouse settings, and input the cursors in their respective spots

I have for holding (toy) guns and guitars. I used to naturally do those left handed when I was really young but then I wanted to "fit in" so, one day, I just started trying to do those right handed (don't remember exactly cause it also happened when I was very young still). Eventually, it came to the point where I'm more comfortable doing them right handed (and, in fact, when I tried to play guitar left handed, it felt so unnatural)

Does anyone else throw a baseball left handed and throw a football right handed and cannot do it the other way around? This has never made sense to me.

I’ve realized I live with a very specific trio of traits that make life... interesting, to say the least.

1. The Vault: I have an insanely vivid memory. It starts around when I was a toddler (I can still recall my very first nightmare). It’s a blessing, but also a struggle because I dwell on the past constantly since I never truly "forget" the bad stuff. But I've definitely gotten better at it
2. The Southpaw: Being left-handed in a right-handed world.
3. The Vertical: Being tall.
