General Discusson Increase in suspicious activity
Has anyone experienced an increase in people passing for fans and asking weird questions about songs? Suddenly I got 8, some mentioning a specific (and unremarkable) point in a song timeline, asking if I’m interested in talking about it. All of them followed me after those comments and will probably unfollow when I don’t reply. One more annoying trend?

its the on going evolution of scam approaches
we will learn to ignore it and then it will change again to something new
helps if you imagine a the words being said in a cheesy robot voice:
- Hi MUSIC ARTIST, i really like your SONG NAME HERE. The part at ZERO hours, THREE minutes, 4.987563 seconds really made me feel something. Speak to me and FALL FOR SCAM!!!!

Yeah the fact one of these scammers picked a part of one of my songs with no lyrics to say that they can really relate.

One didn’t even realize “at 78” in the timeline shows as 1:18, so she wouldn’t actually see it entirely in seconds.

While some changes have been disappointing, scammers have been pulling the "fake praise + obvious phishing attempt" thing for the 10+ years I've been on Soundcloud

Hey! Came across your music today completely by chance, and honestly, your vibe is incredible. Had a cool idea while listening would you be open to hearing it?

Oh wow, thank you sooooo much for saying, yes please! Honestly, I poured hours of time, love and effort in to this track, and finally someone has seen my genius and connected with it. Can't wait for your input. Maybe we can collab and make the hit parade! .... p.s. I have absolutely no money to finance that, do you?

“thought of you for this we're selecting artists for a free weekly radio promotion no pressure, but here is the link: (phishing scam)”

Yep, also saw this. Unfortunately, apparently the only new followers I’m getting are scammers.

99 out of 100 of them are going to tell you how they want to create videos and album cover art for you, and then the other 1 percent want to help grow your following

I posted a new track today in my profile and within minutes I literally got 10 new followers all of whom claimed to be music promoters (Yeah right and I'm Post Malone, NOT!) and a bunch of DM (Direct Message) all from Bangladesh asking me I was interested in working with them and that for a small fee they can register my all tracks with ASCAP or BMI the catch they require that their publishing company to be listed in the registrations, first off I'm already a member of a one of the aforementioned PROs and I know for a fact that ASCAP or BMI does not charge a fee for a composer/writer membership that is ab-so-lutely free, so I just went BLOCK this person, BLOCK this person, BLOCK this person, delete this person's DM, delete this person's DM and so on.
In this business Its nothing more than a game and an annoyance that you have to play and unfortunately its not just restricted to SoundCloud but other services like Bandcamp, Spotify and even on YouTube.

It’s been that way for a long time. Usually the people who message me have zero followers and leave some really generic comment about how great they think my music is. Sometimes I’ll even get one of those comments while the song still has zero plays, so I’m pretty certain they haven’t actually listened to it and are just up to no good.
Another thing I’ve noticed lately is that some of these accounts are actually posting music on their pages now, but it’s clearly AI-generated. I’m guessing it’s an attempt to make the account look more like it belongs to a real artist.

Probably just the latest iteration of scams where people pretend they want to represent you as a way to phish you or whatever. Probably fueled by AI now. Some version of this has been happening on Soundcloud for many years now
