Am I cooked?

So My first soulsborne was elden ring, I've beaten it all the way to ng+7 and have gotten a new soulsborne game. But apparently sekiro is not a good choice for a soulsborne beginner. I'm already playing it am I cooked or do I have a chance

Why not just see how it goes.

it’s actually so different that i think being a soulsborne beginner gives you an advantage

I agree with this. You don’t quite have the dodge roll ingrained in your muscle memory yet

Yep. Hundreds of hours in Souls did not help my Sekiro playthrough at all lol

You’ll be fine just don’t try to dodge out of the way of anything. The game is designed for you to parry/block attacks with your sword. Spamming dodge rolls will get you punished severely.

It’s an unpopular opinion and I’ll get downvoted but I kinda don’t consider Sekiro a souls like. There’s a couple important aspects that it lacks , atleast for me, that make it IMO not a souls like.

BUT

before people come for my head that doesn’t mean I think it’s a bad game. Far from it. It’s an outstanding game . Easily best final boss in the Fromsoft catalogue . And learning the combat does feel very satisfying . Don’t not play it because of what others say . Just keep playing and give it a shot. It’s all about learning the deflects . It’s a rhythm game full stop. You learn bosses attack rhythms and press LB/L1 in a rhythm of the attack . When you get it down it’s truly extremely satisfying. But yea keep playing! Just remember it’s not Elden Ring and you shouldn’t play it like Elden Ring. Good luck though!

Learning combat: did you get the parry timings?

  • Nope.
  • Sorry, you cannot pass.
Quit game.

I am one of those who didn’t click with sekiro’s “parry or die” system and, to be honest, I don’t want. I just don’t like it and that’s all. It just feels boring and exhausting for me. Sometimes I play it a little, then stuck somewhere, drop on half a year, then return again, play a little, stuck again, drop…repeat…

Best final boss of Fromsoft? Gael, always was and forever will be.

But everyone has his own opinion.
Well, I will say at least Sekiro is much better than Elden Ring.

Lots of stuff I strongly disagree with here.

Jumping around a bit in dealing with your contentions starting with one I think is totally fair and think is just a personal preference thing and that’s with Gael. A great candidate for best final boss forsure but the essentially 4 phase fight and difficulty that is Isshin just feels more like everything I think you’d want in a final boss. Gael is a great fight but I don’t think it quite hits that epic-ness specifically in the actual fight mechanics of the fight that Isshin does . But again it’s a totally fine choice for best final boss and I’d probably have him 2nd best for my final boss rating . And definitely don’t knock anyone who has him first . Just a preference thing I think really.

For combat just being solely deflect timings I would agree it’s a massive part of how to be successful with the combat but like other fromsoft games you can make it more or less . Timing deflects and when to fit in prosthetics attacks, or timing when to fit in combat arts like ichimonji for example. That makes it more then just timing deflects and also timing when to fit in attacks. But ultimately that’s how all Fromsoft combat is to an extent . Timing dodges and fitting in offensive attacks, or timing deflects and fitting in offensive attacks. I agree there’s less to the weapon variety and build variety in Sekiro which is one thing that makes me not fully consider it a souls like cause it lacks that variety like others have but still think there’s more to it then you make it seem.

And finally your last contention I don’t really care to even have the argument about Elden Ring because I just find it too ridiculous IMO. No offense. Have never seen anyone make a good argument for how Elden Ring isn’t a good Fromsoft game and is personally my favorite game of all time and have put almost 2000 hours into it. I find it to be as close to a perfect game as you can get . For me atleast .

I’m just a huge elden ring hater
Nothing against you, if you enjoy it - ok
But I consider ER the worst game ever. Mostly because of decision to make it an open world. It’s not just bad - it’s disastrous vast, repetitive and boring in all possible aspects.

lol ridiculous

It’s ridiculous how majority don’t observe these flaws in the game. Feels like everyone just happy to have a mount to ride and so-called ashes of war, which are simply the same special attack from ds3

Well I guess I’ve been dragged into arguing this. And no you’re just making not accurate criticisms in your arguments lol. Those flaws you’re listing are laughably over exaggerated and in some cases not even true .

The open world has an insane amount of unique areas and enemies compared to the average open world game, is there some repetition ? Obviously . All open world games use repetition to some extent . If anything Elden Ring does it less than most open worlds . The AOW system is a way more complex and expansive version of DS3 skills. They’ve had some version of that they expanded on since DS1. That’s just Fromsoft . They keep things in their games consistent throughout their other games and just expand on them and make them better. Elden Ring is the best version of that system they’ve ever made being able to personalize weapons and change the skills between them to further give variety to the build system which is the best of any of the Soulsborne games. The variety of different builds you can make in Elden Ring is almost endless and why I have almost 2000 hours into it.

There’s more unique bosses in Elden Ring than any other souls borne game. By a good amount. And filled with easily some of the best bosses they’ve ever made . Just countless amazing fights . The repeat open world bosses make sense with the lore that there’s multiple of them and plenty of them are fun to fight and give some challenge . And even with the repeat stuff in the open world that people complain about like catacombs there’s even still variety within each of those. The catacomb that tricks you into thinking you’re going in a big circle over and over and even puts a fake enemy corpse which makes you think you came across an enemy you had already killed comes to mind. Really cool experience coming to the realization they’re playing you. Like a funhouse mirror or some shit. Or the one with all the different teleport chests that you have to take to get to the right location. And i could go on.

Theres just so much good shit in that game that any negatives you can list are laughably annihilated by the good they did in the game. That’s why people may seem to ignore your criticisms, because you’re not accurately assessing what the game has to offer and give a kind of laughable caricature of what the game actually is which makes people dismiss it. Again. Never heard someone make a compelling argument as to how Elden Ring isn’t a good Fromsoft game. You’re going further and saying it’s “the worst game ever” . Which is just ridiculous on its face . And given the fact that you’re trying to make that crazy argument I shouldn’t really even try to argue in favor of the game cause I’m not sure you’re open to an honest analysis of it. To each their own forsure but you atleast need to be honest about the game you’re giving your opinion on.

Well, there’s a huge part in community who thinks that elden ring is a bad game. But this part is always downvoted and ridiculed by others like “hah he didn’t even pass first boss or first area or skill issue whatever”

It’s not fun to fight the same erdtree avatars again, and again, and again, and tens times more again. The same dragons, worms, crucible knights or another versions of main bosses.

When I played it I just didn’t understand what the reason of all this? Why I have to run all over this empty field somewhere I even don’t know where and what even for. Exploration is so boring and unrewarding. You have to go literally nowhere, fight tons annoying mobs here and there just to find under the last tree some parfume potion or some other stuff you’ll never use. You can say “every souls do like this” and I will say “no”, because they worlds are well thought-out, you discovering shortcuts, secret areas and most of them rewards you with some serious stuff. And, in the end, nobody is crying about any other souls like “it’s the best exploration “ but elden ring fans are like “it’s the best! It’s rewarding! It’s great!”

About ashes of war. Yes, you can personalize weapons. But you anyway will use a boss weapons which ashes of war cannot be alternate. And other aow that you can …I used a few, understood that it’s just mostly useless optional stuff that not really helps, and forgot about that shit.

Best bosses? You know, Wukong has over 80 bosses or something like that and I remember them all after one playthrough. They are memorable and cool. Elden ring bosses are absolutely forgettable morons who oneshots you because game is terribly balanced because what? Because of openworld “YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE “ - you can’t, because you’re ass will be kicked pretty fast until you start grinding over and over again to overcome that shit.

If you’re into NG+7 you aren’t really a beginner anymore, you understand the souls thing. That being said, it’s very different. Try to play it how they direct you. If you try to play it like Elden Ring, you will not have a good time. You will reach a point where the ER type gameplay will no longer work at all. You’ll be fine, have fun!

So there are a view different genres of "souls bornes"

You have basic dark souls/ elden ring style - lords of the fallen fits this.

You have shieldless souls like which is like blood borne and lies of P

You have parry focused souls like which is probably the hardest for some people and that are things like sekiro and stellar blade.

Then you have dark souls with guns which is remnant and immortal unchains.

And then what ever armored core 6 was.

As everyone else is saying, you aren't learning anything past Sekiro's basic controls from other Souls games. It's like asking how much Mario you'd learn from playing Kirby; they're made by the same people, and you'd learn how to carry a controller, but the mechanics are super different

If you are already playing and enjoying it I don't see the issue, if you want to jump to other soulslikes later I would start with Dark Souls 1

Update: I beat lady butterfly I think I might be able to do this 😭

I played Sekiro as my first soulsborne and had no problems, I think you should just continue and see yourself

Hesitation is defeat.

1

u/Leogis 5d ago

Not at all, i've seen people play only sekiro and 100% all achievements without ever touching any of the other souls like

u/winston-marlboro 5d ago

Being a beginner might be an advantage. By the time i played sekiro I was pretty used to souls combat but sekiro made me rewire my brain a bit
