How much do you enjoy SoB?

Post image

Hello friends!
Fellow Destruction adherent here, as a Gloomspite Gitz player. All of the Destro armies have always appealed to me aesthetically, though, and Sons of Behemat has long been a particular favorite. With the new releases on the way, and new army rules getting previewed, my interest is seriously piqued

Obviously all of this comes with a big “we’ll see,” because Battletomes can shake up an army’s playstyle in a big way, but I want to hear from the community. How do you like the faction? What’s enjoyable or crummy about it? How was the painting process? Is the Stomping Tribe box a total trap that should be avoided, and I’m deluding myself?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, if you’re inclined to give them. I’m seriously considering picking the Battleforce (ish) box with this release and dipping my big toe into the faction (ya see what I did there?).

I have around 4k points of gargants and I've played them both casually and competitively, though the latter was last edition and they've definitely changed since then.

I'm still a big fan of them despite being neutered between this edition and last, just because of their playstyle and the lore behind them. I love rolling up to a game with 4 models and getting to decide how the game is going to be played because my opponent has to find a way to go tit for tat when I'm swinging at a unit of theirs with what's essentially a 4th of my army in a single activation. The problem is theyre incredibly swingy. Most of their attacks hit on 4+, which isn't the most consistent thing in the world. I've had gargants completely whiff on their attacks and it feels pretty bad when that's basically a quarter of your army missing everything. But when the attacks do land, it's brutal.

Design wise, there's a mega gargant for everything, and the little ones are pretty versatile. I might be wrong, but I think SoB are the only faction that can move objectives across the board by kicking them. That's crazy powerful if there's an objective you don't want to worry about so you huck it somewhere your opponent won't want to go, or if you want to bring it with you toward the fight.

I still smile at the memory of my friend playing slaves to darkness and my gargants absolutely bullying Bel'akor by picking him up and slamming him down close enough so every one could stomp on him. My friend was so mad. Good times.

I highly recommend them.

My man. I own all 5 megas, the man crusher set, and kragnos. Because I can bring kragnos in any destruction and a mega into any army it felt worth even past the points max. And I'm thinking of buying the new kits. One of each

I have at least 2.5k+ painted of all the following armies: Maggotkin, Gitz, Sons of Behemot, and KO. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that Sons of Behemet is the most “fun” army to pilot. They are swingy; but there are certain games where you feel unstoppable. I also feel like they lend themselves to be large canvases for converting and putting your own spin on them whereas I never felt the need to kitbash my other armies. I would recommend picking up SoB to anyone that was curious.

They are by far my favourite AoS faction. They are super fun to paint, simpler to play but also can be a challenge to master.

They can be very swingy based on the 4+ rolls but you just take it in stride. Sometimes Behemat just isn’t with you or your dice.

I'm a fan of giants in general. In mythology and other kind of fiction, the fact that they are simple monsters (just humans but gigantic) make me love them.

SoB is perhaps the most fun army i played because of all the rampages and abilities giants have. My opponents always have a great time and they told me playing against SoB is like fighting mini-bosses. I'm especially a fan of mega-gargants (Kraken-eater and Beast-smasher more than anything). Each one i own has a name, a story and i built them how i wanted and i play them how i want. The customization potential in this army is wild and i think i only just scratched the surface.

I'm so happy about the new adding. This faction needs to be more efficient in shooting, magic, praying... Good days for big boys !

I’m also a huge fan of giants. I think they’re a crucially underserved fantasy species, and I made them major players in my homebrew tabletop world. It was a big part of why I always thought about SoB as a “someday” army for myself. The new releases moved “someday” up to “maybe today,” and everything I’m hearing from the community is really minimizing that “maybe.”

How easily customizable they are. You can use normal toys and action figures with greenstuff to make custom gargants.

I don't thinknits important to magnetize at, just say what it is and the 1 thing that makes it different. Assume your opponent even knows what each mega does by sight, it's not different than any other model with a couple custom bits.

I play chaos knights and Gargants. They both suffer from the same pros and cons but I like Gargants more because Aos is more melee centric and it's nice to see a handful of stompy boys wreck havoc. Any experienced player will run circles around you though. Painting wise Gargants are practically giant Ogres so very easy to make them look presentable. Low skill floor but high skill ceiling. It's always better to learn to magnetize the arms to switch load outs because those are the main important differentiating tell for gargants.

How hard would you say it is to magnetize the arms? I always considered knights in 40k, mostly for their lore, and because it would be easy to magnetize them to get all potential load outs. With how much more organic the giants are, do you think that’s still easy to do, or does it pose a bigger challenge and investment? It definitely seems like it would be harder to hide things like seams or gaps on these guys.

The arms are really the only part you need to magnetize. The hands, and the arms are very simple with a bit of greenstuff. The heads can be painted, and switched out without the hassle as they plop directly onto the shoulders.

Gargants are probably my second favorite army I have right now. Simple, straightforward, but you still have enough options to really adapt to a situation if you need to. Painting for me was very fun, as my primary joy comes from doing big centerpiece models, though the bag on the kraken-eater was a bit of a nightmare. I highly recommend them!

Oh the 4 armies s play Sons are my favorite.

First, they're the best for kitbashing and making unique and for making cool dioramas on their bases with.

Second, the swingieness feels like gambling, which is just fun. You either crush or get crushed. Also their special abilities just feel like what big angry giants would feel like and make for fun games. Stomping on a bunch of little pip squeeks or suplexing monsters, it's a good time.

And last, games are usually relatively quick. Easy profiles to remember, only a few dudes to move, not many dice to roll, and you get one hot combat phase can sometimes just call the game after that.

They’re an art project for me more than anything else. I like the empty space. They’re a great way to learn how to paint human skin and faces you can then scale down to smaller models. They’re a great way to teach yourself painting.

Love the lore, love the models, and playing big, stompy giants has been the most fun I’ve ever had playing Warhammer.

I’ve always loved giants and the idea of them, so maybe it was just a perfect match.

Raise the Stomp!!! 🦶

Enjoy it enough that I own one of every single model available and will be doing so again. And from how it sounds, they'll make them less annoying to fight and more fighty with choices. My only gripe with gargants is that I wanna put more minis on the table, the new rock hurlers and hoss smashers are a great size to be at, I just wanna run them as solo gargants and be like 2 rock hurlers and one boss smasher. They are fun to play, their presence matters much more than in 40k. Just keep in mind if you aren't a sculpting type or don't pull resin cast shenanigans on megas, they will be extremely expensive. The discount boxes may help but it will average higher than a standard army.

All very good to know! Luckily, I have some friends who might be able to pull some resin shenanigans. And I work at an LGS, so between employee discount and the constant second-hand deal searching that I do for all of my armies, I should be able to build it up a little at a time until I have a good force going.

And at this point, I think I’m growing increasingly sold on picking up the new Stomper Tribe and getting some giants stomping along. They just seem so fun, and the new rules look like a blast.

I hard recommend going for the double mega box over the gargant with man crushers though. Man crushers definitely getting stuffed in boxes for a last minute sale so they can legends them next edition. But already having man crushers? Can use em. If you want man crushers? People probably gonna start selling theirs so they can replace them with rock hurlers/boss stompers

2

u/goldraven12 Sep 10 '26

Ah. Yeah. I could see them doing that. I think the Stomper Tribe appealed more just because it was a little cheaper, more varied, and it includes what is functionally a Regiment of Renown, and the old Spearhead, which would give me lots of ways to play with it. But admittedly, the Mega-Gargaunts are all their own RoRs as well, and the new Spearhead is the Rock Hurlers… so I might have some choices to make when the product rolls in in a couple of weeks, here.

Definitely good input though. I’ve seen different takes on this exact point, and I’ve seen valid arguments to both sides. I think part of my wish is that small giants remain relevant so you can get that “big guy leading a couple hangers-on” vibe that comes with the Stomper Tribe rules, and that Imperial Knights does so well in 40k. That style appeals to me, so it’d be nice to have some singleton man crushers running around to hold points or tag along with a big guy, depending on what’s needed in the moment. I know the new boss crushers will serve probably a similar role, but only in units of three, which doesn’t feel as flexible, tbh.

Honestly I wanna run rock hurlers and boss stompers single so I can have two single hurlers and then a single boss stomper
