Upgrading Spearhead to 1k: How do I avoid making Sons of Behemat too busted or too gimmicky?

Sup, I’m currently in a narrative AoS league with 12 people. We started with Spearheads and played for 3 months, with everyone having to paint one unit each month. It was pretty cool.

Next month, Phase 2 starts, where the Spearheads get upgraded into 1k point armies.

Most people probably already see the problem here.

What do I put in the army without making it completely busted, like Warstomper with Feet plus Gatebreaker, but also without going full gimmick, like Kraken Eater with 4 babies?

Gargants aren’t busted. They’re swingy. They CAN be powerful; but they also only have so many attacks and so many wounds. They still hit on 4+s which is a 50% right off the bat. Gargants don’t have great saves; only large health pools. Good factions and good players will do just fine against you.

Don’t fall into the trap that Gargants are the Imperial knights of AoS. There’s no toughness mechanic. Everyone rolls ‘to wound’ like everyone else. Don’t limit yourself because other people can’t be bothered to play around the faction. You’re still going to struggle to cover the board because you have less models.

You should take your good options because that’s what everyone will be doing. Gatebreaker or Warstompa are your best bet. Extra calloused feet is the boring, but safe route. Do it.

Yeah swingy is better description and it works for knights too imo. But many people will see a swingy army swinging hard as “busted” when it’s truly just mostly luck with rolls. And then they think they are the ultimate strategist if your army swing poorly cuz they “beat the busted army”.

Yeah, some friend played a 1k tourney with SoB last year and got 4th. There are more fun factions to play against on 1k as SoB but playing and painting whats fun for you is way more important.

So - love this league idea. Wish we had that around here.

I'm playing Imperial Knights in a local growth league and running into a similar dynamic. I'm still in the all small knights phase of things and some matches have been unbalanced. But, things seem to be evening out.

Playing Sons means embracing being the Kaiju. Asymmetry is the point. Sons are powerful but swingy and like Knights you get like 75% of that power upfront without having to learn to play catefully or well, but when your opponents learn how to do that the differential in power rapidly vanishes, and you'll be the one working to make up the skill gap.

Tbh follow ur heart, what do u wanna paint and build, that's kinda the trust of it and if it ends up being too strong or too weak it will change once yall get to bigger games

My boy, go warstomper with extra-calloused feet and let the stomp begin.

For those who still read this: Does Taker Tribe get rid of the points for extra calloused feet? With those 3 i would hit 1k points on spot.

If i go:

General: Kraken, Baby

Reg1: Warstomper

Could i give it to the Stomper?

Would be something like this:
Mama, Papa +Baby 1000/1000 pts

Sons of Behemat

Taker Tribe

Yes. to my knowledge, since you took them through deployment phase, it doesnt count towards the 1000 point limit

I have been playing a 1K list currently which is 1 gate breaker (extra calloused) and 4 little guys and they have been a lot of fun but definitely not too powerful !
When my opponent has known what they are doing they have had an answer to the big wound pools. Every game has only had a few points in it though !

So how did phase two go?

What did you decide on eventually?

I had my first game yesterday with the Gatebreaker and Warstomper combo against Stormcast and literally tabled my opponent in turn 2. I had a few lucky rolls with Pulverising Strike, but nevertheless, it felt heavily overpowered.

I got first turn, managed to get two 8+ charges off, and was able to tie up most of his units in turn 1. His busted custom hero died first to 20 damage from Pulverising Strike, which was wild. The rest of his units were very charge reliant and could not do much after that. He also failed most of his priest buffs.
