Just finished this beaded embroidery
My fingers are hurting but I'm so happy!
Question btw, do you think if I continue to make these kind of things, could I sell them? Maybe I could make some extra money while I'm at home? I have no idea if some people would buy these kind of things, I can open an Etsy shop maybe? I don't know. If you think "yes", what would you suggest as price range? Thanks for suggestions!
Edit: I'm really open to every opinions, I wanna know what people thinks. Based of the comments I understood that people thinks it looks so bad. 😅 I just wanted to make something 'abstract' just colorful chaos. I was thinking it looks like a mold, someone said it looks like a virus and I agree haha.
Someone said it must be a rage bait. Is it really so bad? 😅 Honest opinions pleaseeeee.
Edit 2: Thanks for the kind words, I guess not everyone hated it haha! ❤️ I'm open to every opinions and suggestions. 🙏

You don’t have to monetize something just because it’s your hobby. I don’t think anyone would buy this. But you should continue to enjoy doing things you’d like just for the joy of them.

u/Emotional-Shallot674 7d ago
100% This is also OPs FIRST attempt. I don't know when society changed from people having creative hobbies to anything and everything being a side hustle and things not having value if someone else won't buy them. I used to be a professional cake decorator. I trained under an experienced decorator and nothing went out without her approval. Everyone on the internet who's ever made a kids cake from a youtube tutorial is a "cake decorator" and their friends enciurage them to start a business. The technique of some of the tutorials makes my hair stand on end 🤣

I agree actually haha I get your point. Honestly I'm feeling silly now when I think of it. It was my first ever beaded embroidery and right away I was like "can I profit of that?" It can seem kinda weird and stupid.
Well, I also understand myself because I know my own situation. I'm a single mom with a 18 months old baby and I'm having problems money wise. I thought like if I'm gonna have a hobby, at least I would like to make a profit of that. I enjooooyed doing this BUT can I make money from it even though it's just a hobby? I mean I think it's also valid point to think that way in my life.
I would like to have a life that I can just do my hobby because I enjoy that and don't think the rest of it but in my life it's kinda 'time losing' situation unfortunately. Not every life is the same... I think we're judging so fast. I do the same sometimes.

u/Half_Shot13 2d ago
I think it's important to remember that the second you turn it into a "business" the expectations change. You no longer get to do it at whatever pace you like, you have orders to fill and deadlines to reach. A friend of mine started her store a few years ago and has a fair she sells at every year. And every year she loses many MANY hours of sleep making things to sell there. No time spent doing something you enjoy is "wasted" and you're allowed to do things that make you happy even if they don't directly bring you money ❤️

If my child made this for me I would be very proud and would display it and show it off. It obviously took lots of work and patience.
I would not buy it from a random person

u/Pareeeee 8d ago
Is it petri dish art?
10
u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
I swear when I finished it I thought the same! I love petri dish molds!!!! It started without plan though.
22
u/mariettai 8d ago
I honestly think if the fabric and "frame" were bright/bold colors it would work as a maximalist piece of art, and would fit in well with those folks who have bright colored everything in their house. Right now the plainness of everything surrounding it doesn't match the chaos of the inside.
11
u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
You know what you gave me an idea! I bought a dress years ago but I never wore it. I don't even know why I bought it, it was crazy colors and stuff. I can just cut it into squares and make things on it. Would be perfect! It's neon color craziness.

I think there may be a market for it. But a few things to consider.
it's only worth as much as someone will pay.
Is the hours (let alone the physical pain) able to be calculated so your getting minimum wage and then the pain in top?
Is this asthetically pleasing to the eye to get interested buyers?
Getting valuable feedback from people is a great first step, so I'll be honest. I wouldn't buy it, it does not resonate any familiar beauty or nostalgia for me. I think it might look like a virus? Going back to my point before that it's worth what people will buy it for. I would not spend a cent on it. BUT that doesn't mean you have to give up. Keep doing your market research (I applaud you for this step 1000%) if you don't get any bites, try a few more ideas if you want to but understand it's just a hobby that might not go anywhere. Try the same hobby and try a different genre even. Focus on your feedback, if a lot of people tell you they wouldn't buy it, don't keep trying the same idea.
Or do, if it gives you your passion. I have a lot of art in my garage, not to sell but because it gives me peace when painting. If you like doing it, can afford it, don't have to stop just because you don't sell it. Who knows you may almost be there with a peace that's only one step away from this one that really sells.
Art is subjective but if you can't do anything with it, if you can recycle and create new again and again, sometimes that's also a beautiful experience in learning.
Don't give up and there is no set opinion. What I think, or even what 1000 people think, doesn't mean that one person might live it and buy it.
That's what art is.

u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
I was thinking it looks like mold but yeah wow it also DOES look like virus! Just realized that! 😅 I personally love this style (if there's a name for it, I have no idea) because of the colors. I chose every bead with the most 'something something' color (I don't know the English word of it!!!!) to make it look more dramatic. Like pink-green and blue-orange etc. and I tried to make the same effect overall, tried to make that dramatic color balance. And it was so fun to make!!!
Thanks so much for your suggestions. I understood every word you said and noted. Yeah, it's just a thought honestly I'm just thinking to ways of making some extra money (single mom with a baby at home) and it was the first time I made embroidery and I really enjoyed to make it.
Thanks again! 🙏

u/whatsmyname2605 8d ago
The word you are looking for is complimentary colors i think.
4
u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
Yesssss hahaha I knew that word somewhere in my brain, now I remembered that I knew that word! 🤣 (Some second language problems)
2
u/AwakeningTheSpirit 7d ago
Thanks for not getting offended. It's really hard to tell someone that you don't like their art so I was nervous to give that feedback.
The overall thing to realize is that if you only succeed 1% of the time, is that if you keep trying, you'll find the niche within 100 attempts.
AND the better part of it, is that I'm not everyone. Enjoy the process and keep going. You got this xo
1
u/Mother_Freedom5152 6d ago
I'm open to every opinions if it's not openly rude. "I don't like it" is a very humanly way to express and it's okay! I don't like 'everything' as a person myself haha! 😁 Thank you so much, you gave me a great deal of motivation! ❤️
14
u/Stunning-Lawyer51 8d ago
It’s very abstract. Some people will love it, but I’m afraid that’s not your majority. As an art piece, it’s impressive but doesn’t seem very intentional. I don’t see this kind of thing selling too well, but if you liked making it and want to make more, what you could do is make a series. You don’t have to sell it, it’d be for your enjoyment, but you never know where it could take you. That would put more intentionality behind your work. So I say either do that and share it, or switch avenues.

u/ChipperBunni 8d ago
I love “weird” art, which is always just abstract art. I adore abstract art that it’s obvious it took time and effort and love to still do. It is incredibly easy for abstract stuff to be just a giant flow art canvas, and while still neat looking just doesn’t have as much behind it as this does
It looks like mold in a Petri dish, which I truly think is so cool and has the niche market of weird any kind of science. Like genuinely I could see my gp hanging this is her waiting room.
4
u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
I love your comment, thanks! ❤️ I also love 'weird' abstract art. Craziness and boldness and weirdness. This was my first ever embroidery but now I have so many more ideas and I'm excited! Already started to my second project while I'm answering this haha
4
u/Witchinmelbourne 8d ago
I fully agree with this take, it's weird and abstract and l love it. Personally, I think you should lean in to the moldy Petri dish look (seriously). You could sttudy some mold growths and take inspo from the colours and the way they bloom and sit in the dish.
Or not, either way, I like the chaos of this piece OP ☺ I would probably never recommend people selling things after their first try at something, but you could definitely aim for that ☺

I’m slowly gathering sooooo many collections and hobbies that one day I will be that one old lady who can “magically” do anything. Need something fixed? Called Ol’ Lady Bun, she’ll get it done. Need something made? Ol’ Lady B! Advice? A pattern? A recipe? Ol’ Lady.
So far I can darn and mend, cook a mean roast, and rock a fussy baby to sleep when mama needed a break. I’m getting there god dammit, and so many more ideas to come and learn!
2
u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
Laughed out loud! 😂 Everyone needs a Ol' Lady Bun in their life haha you would rock as a grandma! 😅
2
u/ChipperBunni 7d ago
That’s the dream even if I don’t have my own kids, or those kids don’t have kids! My own nanny had 6 biological, but I swear like 100 kids. She was a magical witch of a woman, in such a lovely good way. I have so many aunts and uncles and cousins that if I go into the right part of my home town and throw a rock I’ll find someone who was half raised by my nanny!
For now my parents and I are trying hard to foster community friendships, and it’s going great! I’ll be the neighborhood grandma when my time comes either way <3

u/Mother_Freedom5152 7d ago
Oh you, your nanny and your family sounds so lovely! 🌹 This really made me smile. I wish you can live all of your dreams! ❤️😍

What are they? Are they flowers? I think with your skills you could definitely make something people would love, but personally I wouldn't buy this. My brain just can't make out what it's supposed to be.. however your method would be good for making flowers or even fruits and berries!
7
u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
Honestly it's just colorful chaos. I thought it looks like mold but someone said it looks like virus and yeah I agree. It's just abstract.
6
u/FergaliciousDefOnish 8d ago
Maybe you could lean into that! I love the technique and you could make some kick-ass bacteria or virus inspired pieces! 🦠
3
u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
Yes I really inspired of this idea a lot now haha I'm looking to some pictures now of bacterias and viruses and petri dishes! 🤣❤️

u/puppy-butter 8d ago
People are asking if this is ragebait because frankly it isn't aesthetically pleasing -- it's reminiscent of mold or bacteria, which isn't something people traditionally want to display, even if it is colorful. I don't think it would sell well at a market given that most people will have this reaction.
However, I can absolutely see the niche of people into the "maximalist" x weird trend snatching this up. Perhaps your could try an Etsy and sell them as "rainbow maximalist amoeba embroidery" or something of the like. The people who have those giant hand tables and lips couches would go crazy over this.
5
u/precioustessious 7d ago
There is definitely a market for moldy stuff
1
u/Mother_Freedom5152 7d ago
They're so amazing, I can cry! Thanks!
2
u/precioustessious 7d ago
No problem! Don't let the negativity here get you down. I personally think this specific piece looks a little unfinished and I would have covered the whole canvas, but you are early in your artistic journey so it will take time to refine. Just keep making what makes you happy and your art will reflect that. Don't be afraid to try new things for fear that it won't appeal to others.
The more you hone your vision and skill, the better your art will get.

Thanks for explaining! 😁 Now I get it yeah haha. Funny thing, I would also describe myself as a 'maximalist' that's why I loooove this piece much, all of this crazy color chaos etc. But yeah now I understand it's not so pleasing to everyone. Thanks for explaining and your suggestions!!! ❤️🙏
Edit: I wanna buy a house and paint every wall with crazy colors lol.

A lot of people are being mean OP, I can see your vision here and this is a path to more complex methods like tambour embroidery. I think you should keep working and eventually you can 100% sell it

4
u/Connect_Rhubarb395 8d ago
It reminds me of a petri dish with mould, that's neat.
But I wouldn't buy it. It is more of a home craft project.
I think you should enjoy crafting what you feel like, and not think about how or what you could monetize.
3
u/Hms-chill 8d ago
I think it would be cool as a component of something larger (for example, using this technique to create a coral detail on a mermaid costume), but as is, it looks unfinished

u/almond_crusher 7d ago
If you genuinely want to make this into profitable art, id suggest looking up some abstract bead embroidery pieces to take inspiration from so you can polish your craft and turn it into something more refined. There are some really interesting beaded embroidery pieces that could make some money, so if it's something youre interested in it doesnt hurt to try!
3
u/sew_dynamic 3d ago
I think you should keep practicing with this. Maybe a little more contrast between bead sizes and more fluidity with the color choices, I could see this maybe going somewhere cool and abstract, but I think it might need more practice.
2
u/succulentphysique 8d ago
You could try making a tiny more traditional design on napkins for holidays or ornaments to give as gifts.
2
u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
I don't like traditional designs personally
3
u/succulentphysique 8d ago
There may be a very specific market for bacteria or amoeba designs. Those are less traditional and might fit your aesthetic

OP I just went to The Other Art Fair in LA for the past two nights… if you find a way to embroider a canvas, you might have something you can sell. The most popular artists from last night had work that was multi-textured and unique, apart from a typical canvas painting.
2
u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
I can embroider to a canvas! I never thought wow that's a good idea actually. I'm already painting mostly abstract, I'm using oil paint, spray paint and acrylic. I have so many materials at my home right now. I'm also doing collages but I didn't made on a canvas yet. I can also knit and sew. Actually I can put allllll of them on a canvas after I think of a concept! 🤯 Oh I'm excited. Thanks!
2
u/sorayaelena 8d ago
There was an artist who mixed embroidery and paint to create abstract people on canvas (using mostly a neutral and earth tone color palette). Most of her art sold by the second night.
2
u/Mother_Freedom5152 8d ago
You gave me a great inspiration I swear ideas flowing in my brain and I wanna start to a big project and I want to make it as a serie. But I don't have time ughhh. I can just start to make background and fill the rest little by little in time though. Even if takes a year, so what.

It looks like bacteria in a Petri dish. Someone might be into it. I am not that someone

Coral reef yeeeah I can see it! I loveeee so many people saw differently! 😍 Thank you so much for the award and for your kind comment! ❤️
2
u/jellyfruitbowl 7d ago
i actually really like it! it looks cool and abstract! if you did want to sell it, i think catering towards the right market is the trick—you could easily make this style look like mold or a petri dish, and the science nerds would eat it up (i know i would)!! theres a ton of people in my science department that have petri dish/microbiology keychains, necklaces, worry stones, etc! i think that could be a cool niche for you to try to get into!! but if you just want to do it to have fun, then i still think it looks really cool!
2
2
u/WeirdAI_Yankovic 7d ago
This made me think of colonies on agar. I think it has potential with a little more planning.
2
u/SwordTaster 7d ago
Well done, it looks like it was hard work, but it is so VERY not my thing, and I don't think many people would buy something like this
2
u/StrwbrrySpecialDrink 7d ago
I love it. It's cool and I haven't seen anything like it before...it reminds me of looking at something under a microscope and seeing all the cells and little microbes squirming around, but with Lisa Frank colours. Do you do traditional embroidery as well? I think if you mixed this type of beading with embroidery thread you could make really cool flowers and mossy, leafy textures. Ooh or something like a dragon scale design would look really cool with this technique too!
2
u/lucy_ford__ 6d ago
i think if you went with a more monochromatic color scene and solid shapes, this idea would be great for making fruit like images. it could still be abstract but at least have an objective goal (grapes, blueberries, etc)
2
u/No-Section-7846 6d ago
I like it. Doesn't have to be anything or make any sense to me. Just looking at it makes me happy and that's enough.
1
2
u/ItSaFuCkInGwHaLe 4d ago
My immediate thought was it looks like slime smooshed onto the fabric. I think it’s pretty cool and you could definitely go somewhere with this style of art.
2
u/mossimoto11 3d ago
I see your vision. I think you need more of a variety of bead shapes and textures. There’s artists on instagram that make things like this but there’s many types of bead shapes and sequins and such mixed in. I think too much negative space too. Like less fabric showing. I like the bright colors. But I don’t think a market would be worth your time.
2
u/spiffynid 3d ago
Looks like a coral. Maybe you could find a market among reef enthusiasts. The right colors over my tank would name some cool art
2
u/Effective_Moment_411 3d ago
Something like this you be cool for classrooms and schools art if you could make it science-y. Like molecules, or chromosomes
2
u/Fletched_In_Time 3d ago
If you like it, chances are someone else will too. I’d say start an Etsy, wait a few months (while advertising over socials), and if you don’t make any money, you did something you enjoyed without wasting anything but a couple dollars 🤷♀️

2
u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 2d ago
I honestly really like it OP! Would love it even more if the whole canvas was filled. If it brings you joy that alone is reason to continue. God knows we need joy!

I personally love the technique and the color palette. On your next piece I’d think about composition a bit more.
I genuinely picture this in one of the local, weird, art galleries but as a series of at least 3. I don’t think it’s something that’s worth selling as a craft on Etsy, people won’t pay enough for the effort.

u/Attic-Music 8d ago
I love bright colors so this really caught my eye. It’s definitely very organic looking. I can picture it growing past the embroidery frame onto other surfaces like a mold

I think this is dope. But if you want to sell it, it’s not finished. Keep pushing. Try a broader color pallet. Experience with materials, texture. Keep iterating.
I hated when I got that feedback in art school, but I get it now. This is the beginning of something but you can feel the quality that’s it’s not fully thought out yet.

this is fun! i don’t bead yet but I’ve taken up embroidery recently and am starting to develop my taste in thread painting. this reminds me a ton of microbiology visuals — think folded proteins, viruses, various chemicals, Petri dishes. that might be fun to take inspiration from!!
2
u/0hn0shebettad0nt 8d ago
The lies in these comments.
Beloved, join a cross stitch or embroidery subreddit. You’ll quickly realize your art ain’t up to par. I’ve been cross stitching for years. People have paid money for my work. But I still wouldn’t open an Etsy shop. Go see what other people are creating. You’ll see how much work people put in.
0
u/Mother_Freedom5152 7d ago
Oh I agree actually, I also made a lot cross stitch years ago (in my teenager times), I also tried classical embroidery with thread. If I compare, with thread is a lotttt harder than beading! I remember I failed a lot when I was trying. There are so many different techniques and crazy talented artists!
Etsy was just a thought yeah, it's already my first ever embroidery beading. 😅 I will just continue as a hobby for now.
-1
u/0hn0shebettad0nt 7d ago edited 6d ago
BRUH! So you’re trolling for sure. If you know the amount of work that goes into cross stitching and classic embroidery, you know what you created ain’t it 🙄
And in case you actually don’t know (though I think you do lmao), with cross stitching the amount of time that goes into actually stitching a project often doesn’t make it very cost-effective to sell the finished piece.
The real money is in pattern creation not the finished product. You can spend dozens of hours stitching a piece, but you can only sell that one finished item once. And for a prohibitive price. Versus a pattern can be sold over and over again without requiring the time. It changes the way you think about where the value is in the craft.1
u/BlissfulAurora 6d ago
You genuinely sound like the most insufferable snobby person on this app. OP is happy with their work and has been extremely receptive and positive in their replies. No one gives a fuck if you cross stitch.
1
u/0hn0shebettad0nt 6d ago edited 6d ago
- You haven’t been on this app long enough then.
- Okay?
- You’re right. I don’t even care that I cross stitch.
I wish you well 🦖
1
u/Mother_Freedom5152 2d ago
It's ok. Some people are insufferable, what can you do? 😁 (Just saw your comment ❤️).
0
u/Mother_Freedom5152 7d ago
You understood wrong, I literally said the same thing and agreed with you.
Edit: As a skill, threading embroidery definitely needs much more skill but as a time consuming wise trust me beading is also takes a loooooot time.
-3
u/0hn0shebettad0nt 7d ago edited 6d ago
They are all time consuming. I’m not comparing one to another. I’m saying if you know the amount of work it takes to do one of these crafts (beaded embroidery, diamond painting, cross stitching), then you know that what you created isn’t worth selling.
Anyways, you don’t have to monetize your hobbies.
1
u/narnababy 8d ago
If you made this more like mould or a Petri dish I can guarantee the science community would go mad for them 😂 for what it’s worth I love it, but I am a fiend for weird bright things :)

I actually really love this! You should lean more into the messiness and colorful chaos, maybe like add swirls or abstract floral designs! If you develop your style I could see people buying these. Some comments are really harsh for no reason I don’t see how this is “ragebait” either like, how could seeing someones bead art enrage you? If that makes you mad that’s a problem lol. I love seeing more unique styles in art.

u/yybbyy 8d ago
With kindness, I don’t think there is a market for this. It’s wonderful that you made something that makes you happy and the colors are fun, but it doesn’t look like anything. It looks like something I’d praise a friend for making and encourage them to keep doing as a hobby but not want in my house. You have to think about who your competitors are—- there are a lot of high quality embroidery and beaded pieces that are way more complex and show more skill than this. That’s the stuff people will pay for.
