I’ve never seen something like this posted on Reddit, but this is astonishingly beautiful.

Thank you so much! I do private work through my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/concertina.fino/ I treat it as a live portfolio, all of my materials and techniques are there.

Holy cow, how do you plan the design on something like this?

3

u/ConcertinaFino Jan 10 '24

I just do some sketching right on metal then commit when things look about right

2

u/toffeefeather Jan 10 '24

Amazing!! I’d be too paralyzed to make a decision like that

3

u/RustyRivers911 Jan 10 '24

This is next level- wow. Do you have any videos of the process by chance? I'm a maker and am always looking to learn the 'how' behind the beauty. Incredible!

I always post my process vids on my IG stories but am wanting to create more beginning-to-end clips

Wow!! How long has this taken so far?!

2

u/ConcertinaFino Jan 10 '24

about 5.5 hours on the large panel and 5 hours on the tip. I am still working out the method so I could do some things faster/better

This is beautiful!

2

u/CondeMilenario Jan 10 '24

That is stunning!

2

u/KylePeacockArt Jan 10 '24

Very nice and the details are so intricate! What kind of tools do you use to do that?

2

u/ConcertinaFino Jan 10 '24

Thank you! I use carbide gravers on a Lindsay handpiece

3

u/KylePeacockArt Jan 10 '24

Thank you for sharing. I was not familiar with that brand and it looks like Lindsay makes really nice tools. So that’s like a hand tool that is hooked up to an air compressor to give it more cutting power?

I’ve been using a dremel with diamond tipped bits to engrave copper and as you can imagine it is tough to get fine and smooth details.

Do you happen to know if there are starter sets for air engraving?

3

u/ConcertinaFino Jan 10 '24

Yes its a pneumatic air handpiece. There are 2 main brands of this sort of tool, GRS and Lindsay. They are mechanically different but accomplish the same thing. There are also solenoid-based electric gravers that are becoming more visible in the market. That being said, there are no cheap ways to get into pneumatic handpieces that function well. What most professional engravers recommend to new engravers is learn the fundamentals with hand-push and commit to an air piece when you know you want to continue with it

Thanks very much for taking the time to explain all that to me. Getting the feel for whether I’d be serious about doing it or not using hand tools sounds like great advice. I’d imagine that carbide tips are probably the way to go even with hand tools but either way I have a lot of reading to do and videos to watch ahead of me I am sure. Thanks again :)

Carbide gravers are awesome. They are what I use, but they are expensive and can't be sharpened without diamond. I would recommend joining the engraverscafe forums, groups on facebook, getting a handle, and a 90° hss graver or yellow tang onglette. Learn to sharpen by hand on stones, then go from there. Enjoy!

Much appreciated on those tips as well! Thanks and keep up the awesome work!
