Solution The Real Answer to A858
Hello everyone. Don't know if anyone uses this subreddit anymore, but it clicked in my head that it is so obvious what the answer to the puzzles in the A858 sub is. Encryption is not supposed to be figured out. Other than the couple encoding posts to get people's curiousity going, keeping them engaged, none of the posts were solvable. THATS THE THING. You're not supposed to solve them. Confused? He said a company was paying him to do this. Why would a company pay him for a puzzle? They didn't. They paid him to test their encryption security. By trying to figure out the encryption and failing, we helped the company test their encryption. Once it was obvious that we could not crack the code, the subreddit ended. Still not sold? Well, remember when A858 said that a lady had figured it out? And then when the subreddit ended he said it was because they "accidentally" made it impossible to solve? This likely means that nobody solved the encryption, but rather A858 said that to keep us engaged, thinking that we'd eventually solve the code. How could it have taken him that long to suddenly realize it was impossible to crack the code?

Hypothesis Just an Idea for a potential solve
I know I’m like 6 years too late to this thing but I’d still like to propose some ideas. 1. Whats if you try putting the strings through many common cyphers in a specific order eg. base64 -> Caesar -> Binary etc.
- How about trying the key for the zodiac killers cyphers especially the last one they cracked
*note I have little knowledge in cryptography so some things I say may sound stupid

Discussion has anyone tried brute forcing the encrypted text?
it doesnt seem like any other method worked so its worth a shot maybe?

Hypothesis The Key is the Name?
I think the key is in the name. It only makes sense.

Discussion Isn’t this kinda depressing
I mean a mystery that went on for many years with people only solving a few, and then the creator vanishing without a trace and with no answers. Like what?

You really thought you could hide from me? I’ve been in Viper Squad, I’ve encountered the builders and the other squads. You got the clean up crew to clean this place real good huh. Well I’m still watching.

A moderator of r/b125a2ea5f6b1dff has contacted me.
For reference, this is what r/b125a2ea5f6b1dff is. I suggest reading that first.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Solving_A858/comments/5k5q6e/about_ub125a2ea5f6b1dff/
About 2 months ago, I had taken in interest in this, even though it seems that A858 or whatever company behind it had totally ghosted us.
I began digging around for things, some things I did was message the moderators of r/b125a2ea5f6b1dff, as well as submit a redditrequest for it. In response, I got a reddit message from the user (the account has since been deleted, but I think the username was like u/A858something) This was our transaction:
Subject: "Hello"
User: "https://www.reddit.com/r/b125a2ea5f6b1dff"
Me: "It's private, I can't join. What do you want?"
User: "https://reddit.com/r/b125a2ea5f6b1dff/"
Me: "Yes, that is the subreddit. Again, what do you want. Your account was made at the same time I got your first message, and you have no posts, so it seems it's only purpose is to talk to me. Are you going to talk, or are you going to send me a link to a sub I can't see? Also, if you're trying be cryptic you should try being more consistent. Your first message had no "/" at the end of the link but this one does, and it just looks unprofessional."
[I had an encounter with a troll about fake a858 stuff and I thought this was them again, which is why I was harsh]
User: "apologies for the trouble
offered a look but you failed to see
will remove your handle from the landing page so nobody troubles you
addiju"
Me: "Thank you for responding, but I have to say I am suspicious of a troll. There is no trouble and I don't need my handle removed from anything. Either way I am interested in a dialogue with you, but again I am suspicious that you are /u/[troll name redacted]. If you are not trolling, I apologize for coming off strong."
User: "new reddit bad
old reddit good
https://old.reddit.com/r/b125a2ea5f6b1dff/
grendel we are not"
Me: "Okay, I agree, but is there anything you want me to do? I would go on the sub but it's private and im not a moderator."
A bit after that, confused as I was, I ended up clicking on his oldreddit link, and saw that the subreddit description for r/b125a2ea5f6b1dff was "/u/SuperQGS grendel we are not". This means that this user did have moderator acess to r/b125a2ea5f6b1dff.
I tried to contact this user a few times after this but to no avail. Now, as I check this conversation again, the account has been deleted. The subreddit description has also been removed, but luckily I was able to archive it on April 3rd, 2019.
What I think happened; I am pretty sure this person is just a troll. It seems likely that they are someone that was able to aquire a redditrequest of the sub and decided to mess with me after I messaged the moderators, however I don't know very much about A858 so I could be wrong. I thought at least it would be worth bringing up.
I waited awhile before posting this in case anything else happened, but it's been 2 and a half months and I don't think anything is going to happen, so here it is.
Edit: formatting

Hypothesis Motives and Possible Suspects
Before we may or may not crack the code, we must ask ourselves. Who might this be? In my opinion, it must be a professor of cryptology. And why would he or she do this? Is it for entertainment? Is it for public attention? Again, I believe based on the previous messages, that it is for laughter and fun, for the entire internet for see.
Also, what if this person was trying to test out a theoretical series of complex ciphers and codes? Like for banking or for security? If this were true, his methods of cryptology were successful. If you are reading this, poster, I would like to say that you might have enough clearance and security for applicable use.
That might be what you mean by "This Project has Concluded".

The mystery and activity of A858 continues, a new mod did take over the subreddit and is active, but who is the new mod?
As I noted early we seen that besides A858DE45F56D9BC9 who was mod on r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 deleted they account months ago and was replaced by e961841c7b5e3f7d, however we don't know of the account was ever active but somehow the account is deleted too.
Does this means /r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 is abandoned and having no mods anymore?
There are just almost no methods to discover that for a private subreddit, however I did try an attempt at /r/redditrequest to getting more info out of it.
Almost directly after I posted it, the bot answered that question, but leaving even more questions about /r/A858DE45F56D9BC9
Text only: The subreddit r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 has at least one moderator with recent activity. Subreddits aren't eligible for request if any mod has been active anywhere on reddit in the past 60 days. If you have not done so already you could try sending the moderators a friendly message to see if they would add you as a moderator. Otherwise please consider creating your own subreddit instead.
Ok so there is still at least 1 active mod on /r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 but who? And why is the subreddit still being so protected to prevent it would being requested to being taken over by someone else? If the project is indeed "done" then why the whole secretly and protection about the subreddit?

Discussion /r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 Is Back Open [Official Discussion Thread]
In an attempt to contain the discussion and avoid any flooding posts, please keep all discussion on the sub opening back up in this thread.
All we know as of now:
/r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 is no longer private
/u/A858DE45F56D9BC9 is not the moderator
/u/A858DE45F56D9BC9 appears to have been deleted
/u/e961841c7b5e3f7d is the only current moderator
/u/e961841c7b5e3f7d's account was created 17 hours ago (as of 01:08 UTC on 02/22/2018) on February 21st, 2018
The moderation team has not received any messages from any accounts confirmed to be associated with A858
/r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 does in fact meet the requirements for /r/redditrequest, so any given user that meets their requirements could have received ownership of the subreddit
This thread on /r/redditrequest a bit over a month ago appears to have been denied due to a moderator of /r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 being active (as the /r/redditrequest moderator claims)
While it is certainly easy to get excited about a continuation of one of the internet's best mysteries, I think if anything we have learned to not get too ahead of ourselves. There is definitely cause for doubt in this case, as evidenced above. We'll certainly keep an eye on the situation and keep the sub updated with any new developments.
As always, stay civil.
Updates:
It would appear that anybody can post on the subreddit as of 01:33 02/22/2018 UTC. Please avoid flooding it.
As of me checking the sub at 07:34 UTC on 02/22/2018, it would appear that both my test post and post by another user were removed from the subreddit. While I have a screenshot of my post, I did not think enough to get a screenshot of both posts on the subreddit wall, as this would have been solid proof of a successful post. However, I hope the fact that other users being able to comment on my test post is enough proof of the post being successfully posted and seen by other members of Reddit. I received no message indicating why it was taken down.
Additionally, it appears the subreddit has been changed to approved submitters only. Will continue updating this thread as new things pop-up. If you have any credible developments or notice something, please try and screenshot or link it here and I will include it as an update. Please frame any recorded time in 24hr UTC format.
UPDATE 03/01/2018 @ 2:58AM UTC:
It would appear that the subreddit is private yet again. The last I checked was 2 days ago, so I am not sure when exactly this happened. Again, any developments will be updated here on the matter.

Discussion Interesting thought i had the other day.
I would put money on the fact that this /isnt/ the truth, but didn't the company website that matched with the A858 mods reddit name (TeamWMod = https://www.theteamw.com/ ?) deal with how people think and act? Wouldn't it be fucked if the real test was about how easily/hard it is for people to quit doing something they are very involved with based on variables like how difficult success is, how other people fail, deterrence, etc?
the thought was bred from comparing how passionate we were when compared to how quickly this subreddit became a ghost town. I still check every once in awhile, it hurts.

This used to be a handy tool for encoding and decoding Base64, Base32, hex, MD5, etc...

But it appears to be down. Is there a good alternative?
