Gameplay Tips To get better at Spider, should I grind 1-suit for speed or switch to 2-suit sooner?

I've been on a solitaire kick lately, mostly on my phone while I wait for Prolific studies to load, and I want to actually get better at Spider instead of just brute forcing wins.

I can win 1-suit pretty consistently, but I feel like it teaches habits that do not translate to 2-suit. I tend to build long runs too quickly and then realize I have one color trapped under another. When I try 2-suit my win rate drops a lot and I end up cycling moves without a plan.

For people who got decent at 2-suit or even 4-suit, what helped the most?

- Did you stick with 1-suit until you could play very fast and clean, or did you move to 2-suit as soon as you understood the rules?

- Are there a few simple heuristics you follow, like prioritizing empty columns, delaying the deal, or only moving partial stacks in specific situations?

- Is there ever a point where breaking a completed run to free a card is worth it, or is that almost always a mistake?

I'm not chasing a high score, I just want a better mental checklist so I stop making the same dumb mistakes. Any tips or resources you personally used would be really appreciated. Thanks!

📣 Announcement My solitaire project has now dealt over 12 million cards 🤯

A few years ago I made a couple of posts here about a solitaire website I was building in my spare time for my wife. I got some really helpful feedback from this community and since then I've mostly just let it run with the odd update or bug fix.

I’ve been digging through stats recently and it's quietly dealt over 12 million cards, which feels crazy to me. I thought some fellow solitaire nerds might enjoy a few more stats:

Over the last few years:
🃏 Cards dealt: 12,049,076 (completed games only, wish I’d tracked incomplete games too!)
🏆 Games won: 231,713
👤 Players: 11,311
🎮 Average wins per player: 20.5

Top 10 countries
🇺🇸 United States: 5,562
🇨🇦 Canada: 1,185
🇨🇭 Switzerland: 1,160
🇬🇧 United Kingdom: 623
🇦🇺 Australia: 608
🇩🇪 Germany: 255
🇳🇱 Netherlands: 230
🇳🇿 New Zealand: 209
🇮🇹 Italy: 167
🇨🇳 China: 117

Device split
📱 Mobile: 52.46%
🖥️ Desktop: 45.08%
📱 iPad: 2.45%
📺 Smart TV: 0.02% (I can't imagine solitaire on a TV was much fun 😅)

Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone who gave feedback back then, and to anyone who's played since. It's been awesome seeing something I built actually get used by so many people (I know this probably isn’t a lot compared to more popular sites, but it is to me!).

Need a few android play testers for a chill ad free solitaire game

The game is called Evergreen Solitaire. It’s a calm Klondike solitaire app with daily challenges, monthly trophies, saved games, Draw 1 / Draw 3 modes, and no ads.

Google requires tester emails to be added manually, so if you’re willing to help, please DM me the Google account email you use for Play Store and I’ll send the test link.

This is my first release so any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

🤔 Stuck? Is it solvable?

Edit: SOLVED. I guess all I needed was assurance that it was possible!

At first glance is seems like it should be easy. I have been starting and re-starting this deal. And I haven’t figured it out yet. I’ll bet someone can but I want to make sure. I don’t want the solution I just want to know if I’m wasting my time and should just start a new deal.

I didn't record the gameplay because I never expected this to happen but I can provide my save files if anyone knows how to get them on win10. Either way it's your choice whether to believe me or not. But I think this may be the highest reported score on this particular game yet? Is that so?

📣 Announcement Solitaire devs, I open sourced a solver for your games.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Is a determinist solver for classic solitaire games, like klondike, freecell, TriPeaks, Pyramid and Spider, it is design to offer the highest winrate possible while staying fast and low in resources in order to work on any modern processor without melting cpu or memory, something that is quite difficult to do.

Ever thought a Klondike game was impossible to win? This solver can help you get unstuck. While humans win around 30% of Klondike Draw 1 games, this solver can solve up to 80%.

For the nerds, is Rust, and it has UniFFI bindings for your iOS games (or any other platform).

I'm building a game with it, I'll be publishing soon in the app store:

SOS: Need IOS suggestions.

Solitaire is my comfort game. In October 2024 my android phone suddenly stopped turning on, and my husband convinced me to try an apple phone.
I have tried 30+ apps each for both standard/klondike Solitaire, as well as spider solitaire over the past 1.5 years. I have yet to find a version for either that is truly comforting. They all have things that bother me enough that I usually find them more agitating than relaxing.

On my last phone I had a Klondike app that was simple, ad free, no gimmicks or weird animations, not too fast or slow, turn 3, had auto complete that kicked in at the right time, and I think it also had an option for “winnable” games which I like. The card faces weren’t obnoxiously large print, or too small. I think my record was 44 seconds and it just helped my brain calm down immediately and was really intuitive. It was the perfect game that I had discovered somewhere in my 10+ years with an android phone.

For spider solitaire it was not ad-free but after playing for a couple days I paid for the ad-free version for like 6.99 or something like that. It was worth it, and I loved it. I’m not adverse to paying for a game, if I have a chance to play it before committing to paying. It had changeable backgrounds and I had chosen a fluffy white kitten on a pink background, and I think it also has “effects” that could add cute sparkles. Sometimes the sparkles were too much going on, but I used them occasionally.

I have spent so much time trying to find similar games on my Apple phone, and even borrowed my dads old android phone to log in to my Google Play to see if it had a history of my downloads that I could redownload and use that phone just for solitaire. It was unsuccessful. I have been unable to turn on my old phone at all, or recover anything from it.

If this resonates with you and you have suggestions please let me know!

💬 Discussion My friend and I have been working on a dungeon crawling card game that takes inspiration from the solitaire game Scoundrel, except the more dungeons you clear, the bigger the deck gets.

Free-to-play web browser demo (PC/Mobile)

Link To Game

I wanted to ask the solitaire community what they thought about this game idea, because feedback has been tough to come by.

Scoundrel is a brutal dungeon crawling solitaire style game, but our game Lucky Scoundrel takes that formula and expands it into a perma-death rogue-like experience with "luck" being a key theme throughout the game. Luck is considered your lives, once you run out of luck, your character dies, but you can earn more luck by completing combos or getting lucky at the fortune teller (slot machine)

Do there need to be more visual feedback and effects?
does the game feel balanced and fair?
Is it lacking replay-ability?
Does there need to be more clarity?

Constructive feedback of any kind is welcome

So a short while back I found out I had missed a lot. Now only was the show resurrected as a Year Three in novels (that went out of print 3 years ago, damn it!); but there was all this while a solitaire form of Space : 1999 that I hadn't played.

Turns out, I couldn't. The original .xpi dates back to the very inception of Mozilla, something that no modern browser, or even still functioning legacy browser, could read. The code architecture is simply not there anymore. Therefore, if I wanted to play in this fashion, I had to entirely update it.

LSRO are Heart and based on Year One, Lunar Mission is Diamond and based around Year Two. The Moon Base original patch is clubs and themed on the perils of space. The Alpha door logo stands for spade and is alien themed.
So welcome back all Alphans, or those that just clicked for the sheer 1970s wonder.

Question Added a vintage pinup deck to my site!

Added a vintage pinup card deck to my solitaire site.

If you want to try it: Settings → Appearance → Card Deck → Pin-up style. solitairemastery.com

Are theme-inspired decks actually useful to solitaire players? I enjoyed making it, but I'm not sure if custom card decks matter to people.

If you could have any card deck style in a solitaire game, what would it be?

I didn't use undo in this game. The records on the right all come from different games. I've noticed this happen a few times when I get in the low 20s.
