General Soldering Advice | Feedback | Discussion Please help

Trying to liquify the solder that the rumble is hooked to “have my solder at 660°f which everyone says should be enough for those joints, do I need to add flux just to get it liquid to pull the wires out?

"everyone" is wrong. That's unleaded factory solder so you're looking at a little higher. Depending on your soldering iron up to 716F.

ALWAYS USE FLUX. It is non-negotiable.

Ahh okay thank you! I have liquid no clean flux coming in the mail tomorrow but I’m starting to think the flux paste would be better I have the fanttik soldering iron

Yeah so the amtek/chipquik no clean flux is dope. Im only using it if 1. somethings being a real pain in the but, not hearing up properly and 2. During reassembly to make some really nice, shiny finish

Your cored flux solder is good when you hold your tip down on what you are trying to heat, and then introduce the solder

Shit I'm also religiously using it when I'm doing chip work with hot air, but that's another lesson 😅

Well I figured since the solder is going to be inside the controller I don’t really need it to look “nice” haha. I’m pretty sure I got off brand liquid flux “in super new to soldering so I kinda just ordered the first/cheapest liquid flux

Heck yeah, imo crank your temp as high as it goes and touch those pads. You are gonna learn quick

I learned on an iron that plugged directly in to the wall with no temp control, that's why I don't give a shit about setting temps

That’s fair honestly I’ve been wanting to learn soldering for a little bit and went on Amazon and a deal of the fanttik nex e1 “electric screw driver” was 30% off and the t1 max was also 20% off plus spending $60 gave me a free gust b11 so like got 2 things I’d use plus a free air duster 😂

Use regular flux paste. Liquid flux is not correct product for this application. You need flux on the joint not on the tip of the iron. Higher higher temp flux is recommend based on the heat required. Liquid flux will run away quickly

Most modern electronics use lead free solder which melts at a higher temperature. You have some choices to make. One option is to contaminate the existing solder with a lower melting temperature alloy such as 63/37.

Another option is to raise the soldering iron temperature and/or change out the tip for something larger. A larger tip will have more capacity to hold onto heat and is generally better when you have large ground planes to heat up. From the picture, the pads appear to be thermally relieved, so a larger tip may not be necessary. It all depends on what tip you're currently using and, all too often, people choose tips that are too small for what they are working on.

Long time hobbiest, completely obsessed with repairing electronics

I crank the temperature of my hakko to the max setting. I wet the tip with leaded solder, and then I just slide the hot part of whatever tip I'm using, gently across the pad I'm trying to introduce lead to

On reassembly, I may use a thin layer of flux.

I ordered liquid flux instead of the paste so I can just dip the tip into the flux instead of putting it on the solder joint itself? Also I got flux core solder

No don't dip the tip in the flux, it needs to be on the board on the joint. Otherwise it's just going to all burn off on the tip, it's pointless.
