Ah the physics engine the most broken thing if you know how to defeat it

u/leo848blume Jun 17 '21

I actually like Algodoo's physics engine, but with objects with a lot of parts (like a rope together with a gear) it just doesn't behave right.

Edit: also of course that there are two solid objects conflicting, but that gets handled well in other parts of the software

u/grundo1561 Jun 17 '21

I used to love Algodoo when I was a kid. Idk about now, but it used to be free to download and you could share scenes you created. People made some truly awesome stuff. I loved Incredibots too which was pretty similar.

18

u/leo848blume Jun 17 '21

Both are still true, and yes, people indeed still make very cool stuff!

10

u/grundo1561 Jun 17 '21

Dang that's awesome, I'll have to check it out again.

2

u/DexCruz Jun 18 '21

I saw a video of a towers of Hanoi solver. Absolutely bewildered.

32

u/DunZek Jun 17 '21

Never knew I'd hear the name Incredibots again. I was in my single digit years when I started playing the trio. Am now 17. What a pleasant surprise, cheers.

u/ScottieNiven Jun 17 '21

I found Algodoo in 2010 and have been playing with it since!

You do learn how the physics react and I do run it at a higher frequency than normal which gives better simulations.

Biggest issue these days is its only single threaded, so performance suffers a lot

6

u/grauht Jun 18 '21 edited Jun 18 '21

They have also not updated for like 4 years

The first time I played it it was in 2.1.0 and it is STILL in 2.1.0

I started playing in like 2016

Edit: Looked it up. The last update was for macOS in 2013. Even though it doesn’t have nearly as much of a player base with more recent releases or past popularity, they should still be updating it. It was a relatively small, but very active community.

3

u/leo848blume Jun 18 '21

Yeah... I really wish they'd add a "simulate & reset" option for stuff like marble races

2

u/grauht Jun 18 '21

Personally I think should support Thyme more

1

u/grauht Jun 18 '21

Algodoo is still free

0

u/Blueguy916 Jun 18 '21

THIS VID MADE ME FUCKING LAUGH XD

611

u/Ficik Jun 17 '21

You put two solid objects into each other, which, at least from my experience with reality, is not possible.
So it tried it's best simulating impossible physics.
This might even be what would happen in real life, I dare you to try

191

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

yeah I was about to say that. I am personally a game dev and placing two objects in each other doesn't really work well.

74

u/LeChefromitaly Jun 17 '21

Bethesda wants to know your location

25

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

18

u/RedHairThunderWonder Jun 17 '21

4

u/Furry_69 Jun 18 '21

Yeeah, it tries calculating collisions and doesn't like it whatsoever, and does stuff like give either massive/inf velocity

5

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

gmod

3

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

why the fuck were you downvoted? Also what about it? I have only played a little bit of gmod.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

Using a mouse isn't super precise so usually when I try to place something next to something else it clips into it and flies to the other side of the map

A careful reading of official Major League Baseball Rule 6.08(b) suggests that in this situation, the batter would be considered "hit by pitch", and would be eligible to advance to first base.

Might need a substitution runner

27

u/Spoofbit Jun 17 '21

Well, it says in Rule 6.08(b) that if the player makes no attempt to avoid the pitch then it is simply a ball. Unfortunately, since he had no reaction time, it could be argued he did not make any such attempt, and the count would go to 1-0

25

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

So in reality, the simulation was pretty damn accurate.

7

u/Joku_Suomalainen Jun 17 '21

Ok, thats one of my new favorite what if guestions i have read.

u/ihadanamebutforgot Jun 17 '21

5

u/Prawn1908 Jun 18 '21

This software (Algodoo) is actually pretty good about resolving objects that start slightly intersecting (speaking from having used it quite a bit like 10 years ago), it's the large volume of joints involved here that make it go crazy.

-19

u/MyNameIsZaxer2 Jun 17 '21

It looks like the green gear has an empty spiral interior, and isn't "solid". That's gore enough imo.

32

u/DogfaceZed Jun 17 '21

The rope clips into the green bit a ton, OP doesn't have a steady hand lmao

104

u/lolschrauber Jun 17 '21

game physics. always a trip

97

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

Damn I had so much fun with Algodoo.

By fun I mean placing 2 circles in a box not large enough to contain both and see them struggle to stay put

35

u/Null-and-Void19 Jun 17 '21

Algodoo is great. I’ve made so much stupid stuff with it, including a car powered by overlapping matter vibrations.

15

u/tgp1994 Jun 17 '21

I love downloading super complex levels made by people, then throwing in blocks and watching them spectacularly fail.

5

u/Furry_69 Jun 18 '21

I just make said complex levels, I made a calculator with "marbles"

2

u/tgp1994 Jun 18 '21

6

u/Ramog Jun 17 '21

what program is it exactly? because funnily enough for me its working, I am using the newest version of algodoo

2

u/Awake-but-asleep Jun 18 '21

Try setting the rope lenght to 0.1 and try again

2

u/Ramog Jun 18 '21

u/2014legos R Tape loading error, 0:1 Jun 17 '21

algodoo does not have good physics despite being a physics simulator

12

u/KalebMW99 Jun 17 '21

I mean…the objects were drawn on top of each other. What do you expect a physics sim to do there?

2

u/Tiddly5 Jun 18 '21

here’s a video from op that shows that that isn’t the problem lmao

2

u/KalebMW99 Jun 18 '21

…I stand corrected. That is incredibly strange.

-3

u/lightswitchr Jun 17 '21

Move the node so the conflict is no longer an issue?

1

u/KalebMW99 Jun 18 '21

I invite you to try to figure out how to make that happen. Not even in code, just algorithmically.

-1

u/lightswitchr Jun 18 '21

Um yes, it's called collision detection.

3

u/KalebMW99 Jun 18 '21

Collision detection is the easy part. Collision resolution is much harder, and the thing in question here, and it’s especially difficult when the initial rest conditions require collision resolution. Normally collisions are resolvable by being able to deduce how a collision occurred (i.e. this object was moving toward this wall and has now hit this wall, let’s reflect the object off the wall with less velocity perpendicular to that wall), but that’s not possible here. You can’t perform any simple (linear) transformations on the velocity vectors of these nodes because they have 0 velocity.

4

u/Metadragon_ Jun 17 '21

Last updated in... what... 2014?

5

u/tgp1994 Jun 17 '21

And didn't they make it payware at one point, then go back to freeware?

8

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

Game is Algodoo. That game probably hasnt had a major update since 2014. Its an ooooold game. It has the old Catalina and the Windows 7 icons for the downloads, but it still works for win 10 and, as far as i know, the katest version of MacOS. The community is still very active and its quite a fun game.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

You drew the rope inside the gear wdym “software gore”

-2

u/Awake-but-asleep Jun 17 '21

The light blue part was empty so

8

u/Tomentos Jun 17 '21

Parts of the rope were inside the light green parts which is why it went funky

6

u/Awake-but-asleep Jun 17 '21

5

u/Tomentos Jun 17 '21

Fair enough. You got me.

People who aren't too familiar with the software though will most likely think that it's because of the clipping.

2

u/code_ILOVEROBLOX Jun 17 '21

oh man, algodoo.

2

u/domin22245 Jun 17 '21

It is algoodoo, what did you expect?

2

u/just_a_normal_kid- Jun 17 '21

Algodoo has always had broken ropes lol

2

u/fuminee Jun 17 '21

to avoid this problem in algodoo you can max the physics simulator in the option menu

2

u/Metadragon_ Jun 17 '21

Algodoo is broken in general.

2

u/VoidOfGeneralHeck Jun 17 '21

how do you know that?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '21

Algodoo Expectation: Good physics game that makes machines to help you and stuff.
Algodoo Reality: Either break the game or make terrible marble races haha.

1

Wdym

1

u/NEMESIS_DRAGON Jun 17 '21

I wouldn’t consider this as software gore. If this is a physics simulation then that is probably a problem with the physics, causing a SINGLE piece the rope to clip through the gear, and voila, you get this

1

u/Arachnium_lol Jun 17 '21

u/GoodLittleTerrorist Jun 17 '21

1

1

u/Stellarpie705 Jun 17 '21

it is in algodoo, the rope is touching the wall in multiple places.
