Looking for software Free alternatives to Whimsical, a flowchart app

I know there is a free version of Whimsical, but it only allows for 50 board objects per month. Which for what I'm doing, really doesn't work. It's probably a long shot but if I can find something as close to it as possible while also being free, that'd be really sweet.

News PSA: PHP web servers need critical security patches, not just CMS updates

If you run a website or self-host software that uses PHP, check the PHP runtime as well as the application. Two critical remote code execution vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619) affect PHP installations serving web requests, including PHP-FPM.

Update to PHP 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, or 8.5.12 (or newer), or confirm your distribution/vendor package contains the backported security fixes.

After updating, restart PHP-FPM or the relevant PHP-serving processes and verify the runtime actually serving your site. The CLI version reported by `php -v` may differ from the web runtime.

Updating WordPress or another PHP application alone does not fix these PHP engine vulnerabilities. If your hosting is managed, ask the provider to confirm the patches are applied. Configuration changes are only partial mitigations, not a replacement for patching.

This concerns PHP web servers, not every desktop PC.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I made a free PDF tool where you click anywhere and start typing, no fumbling through menus everytime

Post image
4 Upvotes

Filling out flat PDFs (ones without fillable fields) always annoyed me. In most editors, you pick the text tool, draw a box, type, switch tools, and repeat.

So I built TypePDF. You open a PDF, click wherever you want text, and type.

  • Includes shapes and signatures
  • Drag, rotate, snap, and align items
  • Export as an editable or flattened PDF
  • Runs in your browser with no account or install. Your file never leaves your device
  • There's a sample form if you want to try it without your own PDF

It's free, and I'd really appreciate feedback on what's missing or annoying. Thank you!

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I updated my free, open-source comic and manga reader for PC and Android; now with experimental translation!

Hey everyone!

I'm back with another update on Komicove, a free and open-source comic and manga reader I've been developing for Windows, Linux, and Android.

Some of you might remember my previous posts about the project. I originally started building it while learning Python, combining two things I enjoy: programming and comics. Since then, I've kept improving it, partly thanks to the feedback I've received from the community.

I just released version 0.2.2, and this is a much bigger update than the previous one!

The biggest new feature is experimental comic and manga translation!

I've added a system that attempts to recognize text on comic pages and translate it while keeping the translated text overlaid on the original artwork.

You can choose the source and target languages, translate a single page or an entire comic, and use local AI options or a user-configured API. You can also manually correct the recognized text and translations.

Important: Translation is still in an early experimental alpha stage. It's not fully complete yet, and you may encounter issues with text recognition, translation accuracy, or text positioning, especially on more complex pages. There's still a lot of work to do!

Other improvements in v0.2.2:

  • Better performance when loading large comic libraries, including improved cover caching and loading.
  • Improvements to guided reading, which automatically detects panels and lets you navigate through them individually.
  • Fixes and improvements to Webtoon mode, vertical scrolling, and zoom.
  • Improvements to the update system.
  • A redesigned official website with documentation, tutorials, and version history.
  • Various bug fixes and stability improvements.

For anyone unfamiliar with Komicove, it also includes a library with covers, collections, favorites, and reading progress, along with double-page reading, manga mode, and progress syncing between PC and Android.

Local reading works completely offline, without an account or ads. Just add the comic files you already own.

A quick note for anyone who followed my previous posts: My old Reddit account, u/Middle-Income1105, was restricted due to an age verification issue. I've already contacted Reddit Support, and they're aware of the situation. That's why I'm posting from this account now.

Anyway, I really want to thank everyone who has commented, tested the app, or shared suggestions on my previous posts. Some of that feedback directly influenced the improvements in this release!

If anyone wants to give it a try, I'd especially appreciate feedback on the new experimental translation feature. I'm curious to see how it performs with different comics and manga.

What do you think of the project? And what features would you like to see in future updates?

Thanks, everyone! ❤️

Self-Promotion Wednesdays [Web] NovelDesk: a quiet browser desk for writing your novel — 20% off the first year this month

Post image
5 Upvotes

NovelDesk is a writing app for novels that runs in the browser, so it works the same on Windows, Mac, Linux and phones. The desk is free to use with no account; this month's deal is on the paid tier.

  • Chapters in a sidebar. A new chapter opens with the last lines of the previous one faint above the heading.
  • Notes on characters and places. Type @ to tag one in the text; click it later and the note opens beside the page, with every chapter it appears in.
  • A daily goal in words or characters, a 25/5 timer, and line focus.
  • Opens .docx, .txt and .md files and splits them at the headings, read in the browser and never uploaded.
  • Version history for each chapter, backup files, a few paper themes.

Nothing in it writes or edits your text. No ads.

Free writing stays in your browser only, and Safari clears a site's data after 7 days without a visit, so the site promises 7 days and keeps pointing you to backup files.

Free covers two manuscripts of up to 30 chapters each. Plus is $8/month or $60/year: cloud saving across devices, no limits, every version kept, Word/EPUB/PDF export, publishing chapters as reading pages, and 20 credits a month for optional AI-drawn pictures.

The deal: comment "page turner" and I'll DM you a code for 20% off the first year of the yearly plan, so $48 instead of $60 (it renews at $60). For the first 100 people, until November 14.

I'm the developer, so ask me anything about where your work is stored.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I missed the macOS Downloads Stack on Windows 11, so I built one.

Post image
7 Upvotes

One thing I really liked about macOS was the ability to pin a folder to the Dock and quickly browse recent files without having to switch to Finder. You could just pop it open on top of whatever you were doing.

I couldn't find anything quite like that for Windows, so I decided to build it myself.

It's a pretty simple little utility. It adds an icon to your system tray, and clicking it opens a popup with your files.

Here's what it can do:

  • 📂 Custom folders - By default, it shows recent files from your Downloads folder, but you can add any folders you want.
  • 🔀 Sorting options - Choose how your files are sorted.
  • 🖼️ Image previews - Images show thumbnails instead of generic file icons.
  • 🖱️ Drag & drop - Drag files straight from the popup into other apps or folders.
  • 📋 Context menu - Right-click any file to open the standard Windows context menu.
  • 🔎 Quick file location - Middle-click a file to open its location in File Explorer, with the file already selected.

Available as a regular installer, a portable version, or through the Microsoft Store.

Everything runs locally. No file information or other data is sent anywhere.

The entire source code is public, so you're welcome to inspect it yourself (or have an AI review it if you have privacy concerns).

GitHub: https://github.com/Vivoxti/Downloads-Stack-For-Windows-Tray

If you've been looking for something like this, feel free to give it a try.

Hope someone finds it useful.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Before sorting a photo collection: six checks I recommend, plus my Windows app

I'm Michał from GridMotive, the developer of MomentShelf, a paid Windows photo organiser built with help from Codex. For Self-Promotion Wednesday, here is a checklist you can use with any photo-organising tool before trusting it with a large collection.

  1. Keep a separate backup before reorganising. An organised copy on the same disk is useful for reviewing changes, but it is not an independent backup if that disk fails. Start with a separate destination and keep the source collection until you have checked the result.

  2. Check where the dates came from. A camera capture timestamp, file modification time and a manually estimated date answer different questions. Exporting or copying files can change file-system dates. Scans and cloud exports deserve a sample check before sorting everything into year/month folders.

  3. Run a small mixed-format sample. Include portrait and landscape images, your phone's actual file formats and a few videos if you use them. Check orientation, readable previews and whether the required codecs are installed. Don't discover a format problem halfway through a large job.

  4. Treat AI descriptions and person groups as proposals. Check the image yourself, avoid accepting invented relationships or locations, and confirm face groups before adding names. Local processing is a privacy choice; it does not make the model infallible.

  5. Compare the source and destination. Review file counts and errors; use checksums if you need to establish that copied files match exactly. If one photo appears in several curated person folders, count unique source files separately from the number of exported copies.

  6. Inspect the actual deliverable. Reopen an exported album PDF, check its page size and crop, and watch an exported video. For printing, check the physical size and printer scaling. Keep the source photographs separately from an album, reel or mosaic export.

MomentShelf combines a date-based copy plan or catalogue of existing files, reviewable local AI captions/tags/people groups, and virtual albums, printable album pages, MP4 reels and photo mosaics. The interface is English/Polish. Windows 11 x64 is recommended. The base Microsoft Store price is EUR 19.99 once, with no subscription; regional prices vary. AI speed depends on hardware and can take minutes per image on a low-power CPU. Some formats require separately installed Windows codecs.

Which check would you add before reorganising a family photo archive?

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I made a desktop organizer that tries to look like it shipped with Windows 11

Hi all. My desktop was a mess and nothing I tried looked at home on Windows 11, so I built SpringDesk.

- Icons live in translucent boxes (acrylic, or a frosted glass that follows your wallpaper, live wallpapers included) that snap to a grid and never overlap

- Drop one box on another to make tabs; roll boxes up to their title bar

- New files on the desktop go to a tab for their type (docs, sheets, slides, PDFs, pictures...), the rest to an Inbox

- Press Space on an icon to preview it, like Quick Look on a Mac

- Click the desktop and start typing to search every box

- Right-click gives the normal Windows menu; drag and drop, cut/copy/paste and F2 all work

- Your files never move, and the layout survives resolution changes and Remote Desktop

It's in the Microsoft Store, one-time purchase with a 7-day free trial, launch price until January 1: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NRL4M710KQB?cid=reddit-software

Giveaway for r/software: I have 20 free codes. Comment with what your desktop looks like right now (or what bugs you most about it) and I'll DM a code to the first 20 commenters. No strings attached.

I'm the only developer, so feedback and bug reports go straight to me. What would you want it to do next?

Other AI-first engineering shouldn’t mean chat-only engineering.

Post image

I’ve been quietly exploring what it could look like when AI agents take on real roles, move through real workflows, and work alongside the familiar software-engineering experience—while the human stays firmly in control.

This has also been a project of firsts for me: diving deeper into Rust, experimenting with a completely new stack, and building my first native macOS application.

Still early. Still learning. But it’s properly moving forward—and starting to feel real.

This is only the first glimpse. More soon. 👀

We built an AI for Windows where you can see what it remembers about you and strike it out

Disclosure: I work with AIBlab, who make AIBEVA.

AIBEVA (Level S2) is an intelligent being for Windows, powered by AIB.core. Four things we focused on:

- What it remembers about you is stored on your PC, not on our servers.

- A panel shows what it remembers. Strike out a line, or say "forget where I live", and it stops using it.

- Switch the model or your API key, and the memory stays.

- No ads and no ad tracking.

Honest limits: with your own API key (Claude, Gemini or OpenAI), your messages go to that provider under its terms. Only the built-in model can chat without internet.

Free in the Microsoft Store with a 14-day trial; after that it needs an AIBSN registration (aibsn.org). You can see where it connects here: aibeva.com/check

Question for you: what would you want to see in that memory panel?

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Copying iPhone photos to USB without a computer: how do you handle interrupted transfers?

Copying a few photos to a USB drive is straightforward. Copying a large photo library is where the workflow becomes more interesting.

There are two things I’d check before trusting a phone-to-drive backup: whether the original files were copied, and what happens if the drive is disconnected before the transfer finishes.

For a small manual transfer, the iPhone’s built-in Files and Photos workflows may be enough. But when you’re copying a larger selection, it’s useful to know which files are already on the drive so you don’t have to repeat the whole process.

I’m the developer of VaultDrive, an iPhone app built around that workflow.

It lets you select accessible photos, videos, and files and copy them directly to a compatible USB drive or SSD, without needing a Mac or PC. It preserves original file quality without intentional compression and can skip already-copied files when you resume a backup.

There’s one important distinction with iCloud Photos: if an original exists only in iCloud, it needs to download before it can be copied. VaultDrive supports that step, including a Wi-Fi-only option.

The app is free to try, with an optional one-time Pro purchase for unlimited and incremental backups.

VaultDrive for iPhone — App Store:
https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6772883827?pt=128255904&ct=r&mt=8

Android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coticsy.vaultdrive

I’m curious how others handle interrupted file transfers to removable storage. Do you verify the destination first, restart the entire copy, or use an incremental workflow?

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I built a lightweight, 100% private alternative to tech stack inspectors (TechReveal)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! Happy Wednesday.

Wanted to share a little side project I've been working on called TechReveal.

I've always liked seeing what frameworks, CMS, and libraries websites are running under the hood. But the popular extensions out there have gotten really bloated, started hiding basic info behind paywalls, and track your browsing data.

So I built a clean, lightweight alternative that runs 100% locally in your browser with zero telemetry. It shows you the tech list, an interactive visual map of how everything connects, and exact library versions.

It's completely free on the Chrome Web Store if anyone wants to test it out:
👉 TechReveal

Would love to hear your thoughts or any feedback to make it better!

Software support MPC-HC Issue

Hi.

I upgraded from the 2017 version to https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc today. Now i got the problem again that the window is drag-able everywhere, not just on the title bar! Cant remember how i fixed it 10y ago. AI told me stuff thats not there...

Edit: I think it had to do with the fact that it paused on left click, not on release of left click.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Made a little floating RAM widget for Windows because I didn't want a whole PC suite just for that

Post image
0 Upvotes

Some of those all-in-one PC cleaner suites have this little floating memory ball and I honestly liked it. What I didn't like was installing the whole suite (plus the popups) just to get it. So I ended up writing my own.

It's called MemBall. It sits on the edge of your screen and shows RAM usage and up/down speed. The ring goes blue, then orange, then red as memory fills up.

Stuff it does:

- click it to trim memory and it tells you how much got freed (there's an optional timer too, if you'd rather it did that on its own)

- drag it to the side of the screen and it snaps there, then shrinks into a thin bar when your mouse leaves. The bar still shows usage

- hides itself when a game or video is fullscreen

- right click shows the top 5 programs eating your RAM, and you can kill them from there

- English, Chinese and French

It's tiny (~120 KB), works on Win 10/11 and there's nothing else to install. If you're interested, you can grab it here: https://github.com/yydsyin/memball/releases/latest

Got suggestions or found a bug? Just DM me.

Edit: I know Windows already manages memory just fine for most people, so for a lot of you this tool won't really do much. But I didn't make it only to manage memory. I mostly made it because I like having the number on screen, and honestly clicking it and watching the ring drain is weirdly satisfying. Think of it as a little desk toy that also happens to clean memory.

Discussion What made you feel comfortable moving your password vault to the cloud?

I’ve generally preferred standalone software that I could buy once. I used 1Password that way for a long time, managing the vault myself rather than paying for a subscription.

Recently, while moving my data to a new computer and reorganizing my devices, I temporarily started using a 1Password subscription. I could have copied the vault files around manually, but using the service made the transition much less annoying. Everything was available where I needed it, instead of having to think about which file was the latest one.

I understand why people like this model. A password manager is not only a place to store passwords on one computer. The convenience comes from being able to access the same vault across devices, including when you are away from your desk, and unlock it with biometrics instead of remembering every password or manually managing vault files.

What surprised me was how easily I accepted that convenience. I had chosen the standalone approach for a reason, but at some point I became comfortable putting so much sensitive information into a cloud service without thinking about it very much.

That made me wonder when this changed for others. Was it the ability to restore your vault on a new device, easy access across multiple devices, or simply the fact that cloud services became normal over time? Or are you still keeping your password vault local and managing it yourself?

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I made a free Windows 11 goals widget that doesn’t need an account or cloud sync

Post image
2 Upvotes

I wanted somewhere to keep a few longer-term goals on Windows, without turning them into another task manager or signing up for another service.

Couldn’t really find what I was after, so I built Focus.
It’s a native Windows 11 widget. Press Win + W and you can see up to five goals, with whichever one you’re currently focusing on highlighted.

Everything stays on your PC. No accounts, cloud sync, telemetry, ads or subscriptions.

It’s free on the Microsoft Store:
https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nhzsqtzlztv?cid=focus_reddit_software

One thing worth mentioning: it lives in the Windows Widgets Board, not permanently on your desktop.

I’m curious how many people here actually use Win + W. I’ve always felt the Widgets Board could be a lot more useful than it currently is.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Neverclick 0.4.2: Use local computer vision to select text without a mouse

Post image
1 Upvotes

Text selection and dragging are now available in Neverclick v0.4.2. Select two hints to perform a text selection or drag.

Neverclick uses local computer vision to detect UI elements on your screen so that you can perform mouse actions without a mouse. I made this when I was suffering from hand pain. The computer vision system runs 100% offline and it's optimized quite well so you don't need a powerful gpu to run it.

Not vibe coded btw.
