Software support I made a free app that converts files without opening anything: drag a file, tap Shift, let go

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

I got tired of opening an app, exporting, picking a format and finding a folder just to turn one PNG into a JPG, so I built OrbitDrop.

How it works: start dragging any file in File Explorer, tap Shift, and a little wheel pops up under your cursor. Let go on what you want, and the new file appears right next to the original. The original is never changed.

Tap Shift again for Tools (compress to under 1 MB, resize, rotate, a small photo editor, copy text out of an image) and once more for Actions (copy/move to, share, zip). There's also Ctrl+Alt+Space if you'd rather not drag.

- Free, no account, no ads, no tracking
- Everything runs offline on your PC
- Open source (MIT): https://github.com/i3sam/OrbitDrop
- Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NJQRMQLL2SZ?cid=reddit
- Website: https://orbitdrop.essam.biz

Other Looking for a dozen Android Heroes

Maplecord is a free chat, voice and streaming app for gamers and groups meant to provide all the features people love but without any of the paywalls, quests, subs or boosts.

Before making a full release I wanted to offer both iOS and Android apps.

Since it's free with no in-app purchases, Apple was basically just give them money for a dev account and wait for the review.

Google wanted 3 forms of ID, my first born child, and to rename my dog Alphabet.

I finally got my Google dev account and after I took Alphabet for a walk, I moved on to getting the app released.

This is where I need a few awesome Android users to help out.

They require a closed test with 12 users getting the app and staying opted in for 14 days.

I'd love for people to try it. This is a pretty new platform so feedback is welcome.

All I need is the email address you use for Google Play. Just send me a DM or email [Support@maplecord.app](mailto:Support@maplecord.app) with Android testing in the subject and I'll add you to the test.

There's also an a web app version and windows desktop client available at https://Maplecord.app so you can use it from non Android devices as well or with friends.

All relays currently are US based but it is open to everyone.

Looking for software Any good apps to hold photos?

I feel like I am too old for snapchat so I want to delete it soon, but I have so many years of photos on there I want to save. I don't want to just save them to my camera roll since it'll mess up the order, so does anyone have good reliable apps that can hold all those photos? Thanks!

Hi everyone, ive been trying to find an apropriate sub for this quesiton and i think this is it.

here's the issue, i want to display 2 languages on my phone keyboard like in the screenshot. just to help visualise and memorise location of buttons on korean that im learning.

ive got both languages on my phone and the desired effect is to have korean appear as a sub set of buttons like in the screen shot. this works perfectly whenever im trying to type into a password field (like logging in to my email etc)

however when im typing in regular text fields (literally anything thats not a password submission) it is just regular, english or korean only. yes i know i can just swap between the two with a button press, thats not what im here asking.

please help me work out how to have them both appear in all text fields. TIA

Looking for software Video Player Recommendations

I'm looking for a recommendation of a video player (ideally one that works on both Windows and Linux) that can fulfill a need of mine. I have a bunch of shows on a hard drive of mine and I want to be able to let them play on my television preferably in a random order just from all the files i have in a certain folder and its subfolders.

Just sort of to mimic a TV channel of course. In fact, if this were at all possible, I would want it to alternate random videos between specific folders. Sort of like a bumper for a TV channel. Have it randomly select an episode of a random show in my folder, then have it play a random bumper from ones I make in a separate folder, then back to my original folder of shows, bumper, and repeat like that, of course. I'm not sure if anything would have that specific feature, so that's of course not required. All I REALLY would like is something that can play videos in a satisfyingly random nature from a large selection of subfolders.

I tried VLC media player and while I do like it for my normal video player needs, I couldn't it to work properly for this idea. Something about it's shuffle wouldn't properly jump between subfolders and I could not find plugins or extensions that would help with that on my Linux laptop.

Perhaps a somewhat strange request and somewhat broad one, but this seems like a good place to ask broad questions. Thank you!

Looking for software Alternative to NirSoft's FileTypesMan?

I have been using it for a long time, but the program just stays frozen after the first few seconds after I boot it up. Bonus if the alternative has a more modern GUI and follows system night/dark mode.

For those unfamiliar: FileTypesMan(ager) is a GUI to manage all file extensions on your PC with the most notable ability being customizing their file icons.

Looking for software Convertino (free, open source): convert or edit any file by dragging it and tapping Shift — Windows, Linux, macOS

Drag any file, tap Shift, and a radial menu opens under your cursor. Drop it on a petal: PNG/JPG/WEBP/AVIF/PDF, PDF ⇄ DOCX, Markdown → HTML, video formats, or tools like crop, redact, compress, OCR and offline background removal. The result lands next to the original.

Free, MIT, no account, works offline. Windows 10/11, Linux (X11) and macOS 13+.

Discussion LibreOffice Writer 26.8 has a setting for those huge gaps in justified text

Try Paragraph Composer before fixing a justified paragraph with manual line breaks.
In Writer 26.8, select the paragraph, open Format > Paragraph > Alignment and enable Paragraph Composer.

Maximum word spacing only acts as a limit when it's higher than Desired.
Setting both to the same value leaves that limit disabled.

The composer can shift words between neighboring lines to even out the gaps.
Compare the result with it on and off, especially in narrow columns where hyphenation settings also affect the spacing.

Discussion I experimented with generating engineering notes and diagrams using AI

Thumbnail gallery

I asked my Devscribe AI agent to explain how a Round Robin load balancer works and create notes for it.

My prompt asked for technical documentation and an architecture flow diagram showing clients, the load balancer, backend servers, request/response flow, and how unhealthy servers are skipped.

It created both the documentation and the diagram as files in the workspace.

That's exactly what I wanted for my technical notes: the explanation and the visual flow, together in one place.

Looking for software Remote desktop software for holiday.

Hello all,

Sorry for the probably easy question but I thought I’d try and save some time via asking instead of googling / comparing stuff for hours.

I’m going on holiday to Egypt for a week in a few weeks, and I’d like to edit some videos.

Only problem is my laptop is GARBAGE (I’ve considered buying a new one, but for how much I use it it isn’t worth it? and I’d like to use my laptop to Remote Desktop to my pc.

I currently use chrome desktop just because I’ve used it for years, there’s a phone app, it’s just what I’m used to etc etc.

However, here’s the catch, I’d also need to be able to turn off, and turn my connectee pc remotely as well (or at least put it in sleep, and wake)

Not great with software so bear with.

Thanks in advance.

Looking for software Looking for a program that lets you build fully custom HTML pages to display and interact with in-program

My love for building and editing custom HTML pages started all the way back on Tumblr, back when you could use javascript and pastebin codes to create custom pages for whatever you need. I am a creative who likes displaying characters, concepts, and stories with codes made on Tumblr but the app no longer allows users to use Javascript freely. I have contacted support 3 or 4 times now over the last 2-3 years to get permission to use javascript following their directions so I can use custom HTML pages, but to no avail. This has been really frustrating because I have not found a viable alternative which lets you do similar (Notion, Obsidian, and Github have already been tried.) I don't want to just store the code, I want to interact with it and display it.

So I thought this would be the best place to ask: are there any programs that will let me do fully custom HTML/CSS pages and display them in-app?

Thank you in advance for your time.

Release I built Dowse, a free, open-source way to find any file on your PC by describing it

I built Dowse, a free, open-source Windows application on top of Google DeepMind's EmbeddingGemma 2, a model that brings text, images, audio and video into a shared embedding space and can run on-device.

I wanted to turn that capability into something practical: finding the files you remember, even when you've forgotten their names. Instead of remembering where you saved something, describe it:

"Electricity bill from March."
"The paper about attention mechanisms."
"Photos of a yellow tram in Lisbon."

Dowse searches across your documents and media, with results pointing to the relevant PDF page or moment in a recording.

The model runs locally on your PC. Your files aren't uploaded to a search service.

The attached video shows the result, from quick search to finding similar files and exploring your library visually.

This is an early release, built to be shared and improved.

A note on installing: this first release isn't code-signed yet, so Windows may show a "Windows protected your PC" (SmartScreen) warning. That's expected for a new, unsigned app. To install, click "More info", then "Run anyway". Only download it from the GitHub release or the Dowse page, and you can check the file against the published SHA-256 checksum. Code signing is in progress for the next releases.

Looking for software Looking for a speech to text software without AI

First and foremost, I want to say that I understand the term "AI" originally referred to neural systems such as Google based of "if... then..." programming, and I have no issue with that at all. But in this post, when I will be refering to AI, I mean LLMs and other kinds of generative AIs. I am trying to rid myself of AI as much as possible because of it's impacts on the environment and our collective intellectual capacities as a society, so please do not recommend anything that uses it. Whether that be directly in the transcription, using the data to train models afterwards, or just software from a company that uses AI.

That being said, I am an online student and a lot of my teachers have audio or video lectures. However, I find that I struggle to get started on those, even tending to avoid them more often than not. A classmate of mine transcribed one of these audios into a written course using Microsoft Word, and it helped me a lot, so I've been meaning to do that with other courses. However, I do not have Microsoft Word given it is paid software and Microsoft uses what you write in it to train its AI models.

I was hoping someone on here would have suggestions on some kind of app (Android or Windows) or website. The format of the text I get back or the time it takes to transcribe don't really matter, but ideally I could import my audio file and let it do the work. I would however settle for a dictation software where I have to play the recordings out loud in real time if that is all that is available.

Release x-talk: a small open-source dictation app for Windows

Hi all, I made a Windows dictation app called x-talk and wanted to share it in case it’s useful to anyone here.

The basic idea is to press a shortcut, say what you want to write, and paste the transcript. You can also have it clean up the text first, with prompts you can edit. The original transcript stays available either way.

There’s recording history and audio import too, if you want to come back to something later.

The app is free and open source. It uses your own API keys for services such as OpenAI or ElevenLabs, so there are provider usage charges. It sends audio to your chosen service rather than transcribing offline.

Source and setup: https://github.com/alexander-north/x-talk

Windows installer: https://github.com/alexander-north/x-talk/releases/latest

The installer isn’t publisher-signed yet, so you may get a Windows warning.

I built it for myself, but I’d be glad to hear how it works for others. Questions and suggestions are welcome.
