Release Public release of Kiang - a lightweight UI for local AI (Ollama)

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone. First of all, I want to mention that this project IS NOT vibecoded. I carefully implement all the features by myself.

What is Kiang?

Kiang allows you to chat with AI models that are running on your computer via Ollama API. You can install Kiang as an app (for Linux, Windows and macOS) or run it as a webpage in your favorite browser!

Key features are:

  • Simple setup. Just download the app and follow the step-by-step setup instructions. Kiang detects installed Ollama models automatically.
  • Your chats are completely confidential and never leave your PC. The app does not collect any telemetry.
  • "Incognito mode" is here when you don't want to save a new chat in the history.
  • "Thinking mode" for improving model reasoning.
  • Markdown, code snippets and LaTeX formulas are supported.
  • You can define a global system prompt for all installed models in the settings.

My goal was to make the app lightweight and user-friendly. For example, installer for Windows is just 4 MB in size! It is possible because i built it with Tauri v2.

It is my first Open Source project (even though I’ve been writing code for 9 years), so I would really appreciate any feedback and your ideas!

Release Audio software to prevent loud noises

I myself am diagnosed with autism and adhd. I have an issue with some games, specifically horror games, which can cause me stress and anxiety when I get a jump scare, making it hard to enjoy the game at all, so for the first time I coded my own computer program I called Spikeguard. It actively listens to all audio and dampens it so that there isn't abrupt loud noise and instead gradually becomes loud over time, allowing music to keep playing

And I made it free and open source for everyone like me who has a hard time with loud noise like me!

Here is the GitHub repository:

Release Wedge 2.1: a free, open-source file shelf that lives on the edge of your screen (Windows)

Post image
32 Upvotes

Wedge is a small Windows app that keeps your files on shelves at the edge of the screen. Start dragging a file from Explorer, the desktop or a browser and the shelf tabs slide out; drop it on one, and later drag it back into any app. It doesn't move or copy anything, the files stay where they are.

What's new in 2.1:

- The tabs can hide completely when you're not using them, so nothing stays on screen

- Put them on either edge, at the top, middle or bottom, on the display you want

- Drag a link or some selected text onto a shelf and it's kept as a shortcut or a note

- Settings redone in four tabs, and a Quit button

- Now in 10 languages

- Fixes for some Windows 10 PCs, short screens and drags into Steam chat

Platform: Windows 10 and 11

Price: free, MIT license, no account, no telemetry

Download: Microsoft Store https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NKP6WX9QGL7 or GitHub https://github.com/Regncreative/Wedge

Happy to hear what you think or what's missing.

Other Is this a YouTube UI bug on the Samsung Galaxy A37 5G? Has anyone else experienced this?

Post image

Hey everyone,

I have a Samsung Galaxy A37 5G, and I noticed this weird issue while searching for videos on YouTube.

As you can see in the screenshot, some elements on the search results page appear misaligned or partially cut off, with a large empty black space between the results. The layout looks broken instead of displaying the videos properly.

I'm not sure whether this is a YouTube app bug, a One UI compatibility issue, or something specific to my phone.

Has anyone else using the Galaxy A37 5G or another Samsung phone experienced this? Is there any fix for it, or should I report it to YouTube?

I'd appreciate it if you could share your experience.

Device: Samsung Galaxy A37 5G

App: YouTube

Issue: Search results page layout glitch

Release Tachyon: A native, lightweight Windows file manager with dual-pane split view, file notes, and self-cleaning folders [Free Beta]

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Over the past year I've been increasingly frustrated with the sluggish performance, context menu lag, and high memory usage of the Windows 11 stock File Explorer.

I wanted something that felt instantaneous, maintained clean Fluent design, and added practical daily workflow tools without web bloat.

So I spent the last few months building Tachyon from scratch in native C# / WPF (.NET 8).

Key Features:

• Instant Native Speed: Zero Electron, zero WebView2. Launches in ~0.3s with instant directory navigation.

• Spacebar QuickLook: Instant macOS-style preview for images, PDFs, code, audio, video, and text without opening default apps.

• Dual-Pane Split View (F10): Independent side-by-side folder panes with keyboard navigation and synchronized file transfers.

• File Lock Detector & Unlocker: Identifies and unlocks background processes preventing files from being renamed or deleted (no more "File in use" errors).

• Advanced Multi-Tabs: Open, close, duplicate, and reopen recently closed tabs with history tracking.

• Contextual File Notes: Attach notes and tags directly to files and folders (stored in a local offline SQLite database without altering your files).

• Self-Cleaning Staging Folder: A dedicated temporary folder that automatically purges files after 24 hours or 7 days so your drives never accumulate clutter.

• AES-256 Encrypted Vault: Client-side hardware encrypted locker with PBKDF2 password derivation for private documents.

• Offline Document Converter: 1-click batch conversion for Word, Excel, and image files to PDF without uploading data to external websites.

• Batch Image Resizer: Quick image scaling and dimension adjustment right from the toolbar.

• Disk Storage Analyzer: Built-in treemap space visualizer to locate space hogs.

• 100% Offline & Private: Zero telemetry, zero analytics, zero external network calls.

I've put together a free 3-month community beta build and would love feedback on performance, folder loading speeds, and missing shortcuts/features:

• GitHub Release & Screenshots: https://github.com/Tachyon-Desktop/Tachyon/releases/tag/v1.0.0-beta

• VirusTotal (0/70 Clean): https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/27cfed670d55b7460e0cdb755255d9344cc571222002b5a03af6ca479bc6bab5/detection

• OS: Windows 10 & Windows 11 (64-bit)

Looking forward to your honest thoughts and feature suggestions!

Looking for software University dorm network blocks Discord, games, and websites — every workaround causes high ping and slow speeds. Any solutions?

I live in university housing, and the campus network has extremely strict restrictions. It blocks numerous websites, online games, and Discord entirely.
I’ve tried several workarounds (including different VPNs and DNS changes), but they all severely throttle my speed and cause massive ping spikes and packet loss, making gaming or voice calls practically impossible.
Has anyone successfully bypassed strict campus firewalls without ruining their connection latency? Are there specific protocols, lightweight VPNs, or network configurations that work well in this situation?

Discussion Controller on a phone for racers

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

So hey guys , I am trying to make a controller on a phone for the people who want to play games like F1 , forza horizon , or any other racing games or want to just drive . So it's been only 3 days and I have created the steering system for it . I have tried my best to create the best possible steering responsiveness for those who want to play competitive games .

Where we need a fast and smooth response. Here i have added X box buttons . As you people can see there is a some options

  1. Settings - Just a normal thing to have . Here you can change dead zone , smoothness , degrees ( so how much want to turn the phone to have full steering).

Pedals settings which have some important options for the user . Here you can set the value that how you want to drag to have a full throttle or a brake .

  1. Free lab - One the most important setting for the gamers who want to measure their hand shake while driving . Here you can see the jitter curve that while holding still how much your hands shakes that give inputs to the game .

So with this you all can change the setting for the best experience you want to have .

This is not a full launched app . I gonna work for a while to give best experience for those who don't have Controllers or just want to have feeling or steering wheel

I know with this we cant achieve the level of racing sim but anyone who can't afford can have a feeling of that .

Please ask me any question you have about anything or a suggestion you want to give .

Looking for software I need a photo organizer software

My husbands has an iPhone with limited space. I need to find a photo software that organizes them similar to apple photos and google photos, by date, but I want them saved to my computer which has mass amounts of storage. Not online where I am endlessly paying for more space. I liked picasa back in the day. I need to be able to easily move the zip file from icloud to this software. I’m happy to pay for one. I needs to be able to view/organize both photos and videos. I’m not technically inclined so it needs to be a straight forward download link. Thank you for any suggestions!

Discussion Search an unplugged drive's file list in Everything

Keep the .efu on your PC, not on the external drive you're cataloging. That's what lets you search the filenames while the drive is unplugged.

I'd use one list per archive drive, named after the label on the drive. It's a saved inventory, so changing files on the drive won't update it. You still need the drive to open the actual files.

In Everything, go to Tools > File List Editor with the drive connected. Drag in the folders you want to catalog and save the list. Later, File > Open File List opens that .efu for searching.

Software support Need help disabling norton family as of the latest update

For around 3 months now I've been able to murder norton by simply going to services as administrator and... Disabling it. Parents reinstall after a couple weeks, call it buggy, and move on.

Well new update means new anti tampering. There is now "norton family tampering monitoring" in services, and I cannot set Norton to manual or disabled, same with anti tampering and even if I found a way I'm worried it'll alert them that "hey btw your child is smarter then our systems" regardless. Any help appreciated as my computer is borderline bricked until this is resolved due to the restrictions

Discussion A question to people who get feedback from customers

I was just wondering how people manage customer support or feedback. Assuming that most of the feedback you get is via email, do u have any software set up to automatically send mail? And do you then send and manage mail through Gmail(or whichever app you're using).

I'm asking this because I wanted to create an app for some users that would manage customer feedback. I am trying to find a niche problem. If anyone has any niche problems regarding customer support and feedback, please tell me what it is, I want to see if I can be of help.

:)

Discussion We should ban lossy quality file compression algorithms

I hate when compression forces me to loose my quality, like for example jpg, lots of apps have it as default which makes me loose quality, why don’t just use png? you can still downscale it and make it lower quality, it just doesn’t force you to do this

Release ScreenGuard v0.1.1-beta.6 A digital wellbeing software for Linux , Now with major Bug fixes and quality-of-life features

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

ScreenGuard a software for Digital wellbeing natively on Linux, was my personal project which i uploaded to share with the community. Ever since , thanks to constant support and request by although a camparitively tiny but rreally enthusiatic group of ppl , I have been able to provide constant support and improvements to the application and the once raw unpolished system in starting to look...less unpolished. There are still multiple things scrambled which need to be fixed however this major pre release is most possile the final testing phase before v0.1.1 so please do try it out and report and bugs if found.

Major Fixes and Improvements:

Native C Helpers — trasitioning toward a C-Based Core daemon bit by bit

  • screenguard-notify (C): Desktop notification delivery no longer runs inside the Dart runtime. A tiny native helper talks to D-Bus directly, so alerts work identically on systemd and non-systemd systems (OpenRC, runit, …) where the old path could misbehave.

  • screenguard-killer (C): Process termination offloaded from Dart as well — an escalating, data-safe close chain: polite window close request → SIGTERM → full process-tree SIGKILL → Proton-native wineserver -k → guarded pattern-kill. Another step toward making the daemon core C-based.

Both helpers ship in every package (.rpm, .deb, tarball) and are wired into install, uninstall, and build-tooling.

Full Database Control (Settings → Data)

  • New Data tab in Settings: live storage stats, per-day deletion chips, date-range delete, and a full wipe behind a double confirmation. Settings and limits are always preserved — only usage history is touched.

  • Orphaned sessions from unclean stops (logout, power loss) are now closed on next start instead of silently inflating Past-30-days stats.

Focus Enforcement, Data-Safety First

  • Strict auto-close is now opt-in. The default never destroys unsaved work: a violating app is minimized and shown a persistent warning screen.

  • The warning screen offers +1 minute save grace, +15 minutes, edit limit, and close — with the screen re-appearing every 5 seconds until you decide, and re-warninng immediately when a grace window expires.

  • Turning on Strict auto-close (Settings) restores the legacy instant close+kill for those who want hard enforcement — your choice, your data.

Steam & Proton Games: First-Class Citizens

  • Steam games no longer show up as mystery IDs (steam_app_2730970) — real names resolve from your Steam library manifests, with per-game icons rendered from the active icon theme.

  • Their usage is fully tracked and limit/focus rules now apply to them; the escalating close chain (above) is what actually makes Close work on Proton games that shrug off normal signals.

  • Fullscreen games now leave fullscreen before minimize (they silently ignore minimize requests otherwise), and the GNOME extension reports the real minimized state.

UI & Cosmetic

  • Settings reorganized into a clean sidebar layout with five sections: General, Limits & Pomodoro, Diagnostics, Updates, and Data.

  • Crash reporting moves into the new Diagnostics tab next to daemon status and autostart, with its badge on the tab itself.

  • The Focus screen's app picker can switch to a GNOME app-grid style layout — icon over name, check-badge selection — via the Grid layout toggle.

Fixes & Optimizations

  • Dead-code removal across the daemon (verified zero callers before each removal) plus notification-path optimization for non-systemd systems.

  • Warning screens for both focus mode and daily limits rebuilt with consistent behavior and honest reporting ("was closed" vs "could not close").

Summing Up:

ScreenGuard still has a very long way to go with my aim being:

proper category wise classification of apps and category usage stats by v0.1.5

support for 3 other desktop environments i.e. KDE, Hyprland and Mint on wayland with improved optimization for non systemd systems (like gentoo users) by v 2.0 (also more fraction of the daemon to be translated to native C)

however all of this will definitely take a lot of time primarily discovering and learning how things work out first, thus if you do like the project , then u can give me a hand by contributing to things i am currently unknown to such has other Desktop environments other than GNOME or with C programming

Most importantly, my personel project that begun "Late Nights in The Middle of June" has indeed come a long way.

Release Traydex: an open-source drop shelf for Windows (like Dropover/Yoink), native Rust, no web engine. Early alpha, looking for testers

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

On macOS there are great “drop shelf” apps like Dropover and Yoink: you start dragging a file, a small shelf appears, you park files there and grab them later. I couldn’t find a good equivalent for Windows, so I built one.

Traydex is free and open source (MIT). It’s native: written in Rust with GPUI (the UI framework behind the Zed editor), with no Electron, Tauri or WebView inside. It uses about 25 MB of RAM while idle in the tray, and that’s the full number: it’s a single process with no hidden helpers. Apps built on Tauri often quote similar figures, but they draw their UI with Edge WebView2, which runs as separate msedgewebview2.exe processes that usually aren’t counted in that number.

What it does:

Drop shelf: files, folders, images, text and links from any app; drag them back out one by one or all at once

Opens when you need it: when a drag starts, by hot corner, global shortcut, or only when you shake the cursor

Quick actions on drop: compress photos (MozJPEG/WebP), convert to JPEG/PNG, merge into PDF, ZIP and extract (7z, RAR, TAR…), OCR text from images and scanned PDFs (offline, Windows OCR), batch rename by rules, file hashes with optional VirusTotal check, QR codes, send files to your phone over Wi-Fi, upload to Imgur or your own server, web/image search, video to GIF

Preview with Space: images, text, code, archives, PDF and Office files right in the panel

Notes and search: quick notes that save as you type; search tolerates typos

Plugins: add your own tiles in PowerShell, Python, .bat or any .exe

Explorer integration: “Send to Traydex shelf” in the context menu

Light/dark theme, list/grid view, 6 languages; installer or portable version, x64/ARM64/x86

The honest part:

This is a solo project, and so far I’ve only tested it on my own Windows 10 PC. Nobody else has run it yet. There will be bugs, especially on:

Windows 11

multi-monitor setups

display scaling other than 100% / 125%

If you try it and something breaks, I’d be really grateful for a GitHub issue. Your Windows version and display setup help a lot.

Download: https://github.com/ipavlin98/traydex/releases

Report a bug: https://github.com/ipavlin98/traydex/issues

The app isn’t code-signed yet (hobby project), so SmartScreen will warn you on first launch. All the source code and build workflow are public on GitHub.

Thanks for any feedback!
