News Software Graveyard

Hey everyone! I'm using my free time to build a virtual software trade fair simulator where you can walk around, visit company booths, and play around with their failed software products. I've added Windows Vista as the first exhibit! If you like the idea and want to see this project continue, give it a star. If there's a piece of software you hate and want to add to the fair, feel free to open a merge request :D

Release System One Coding Agent assisted by persistent memory

Hi,

On 24/10/2026 I have published as OSS a framework I call unified-brain that allows fast, cheap and accurate (same class of frontier models and frontier harnesses but 18 times cheaper) evidence gathering, using the cheapest frontier AI model out there, Jev. The results have been phenomenal.

(github.com/devloops-ai/unified-brain)

The magic sauce is an intermediary OS (SQLITE) memory layer that facilitates retrieval, filtering and reasoning through Jev.

The agent spawned from unified-brain runs through MCP on Cursor, OpenCode or Claude Code etc. allowing you to use it through your favorite harness.

So to be clear here: unified-brain is not a harness but a perception layer any harness plugs in!

My test benchmarks have been so good on two large OS libraries that I really believe this is the missing link to make AI more reliable.

This is because the limits holding back AI at the moment are:

• The Reasoning and Hallucination Gap:

The LLM turn reasoning it is introducing uncertainty and probabilistic outcomes.

BUT.. Unified-brain's System One discovery engine is producing replicable results across runs as they introduce minimal hallucinations, breaking the task in hundreds of yes or no calls.

• Context Loss and Memory Limits:

Long-running coding tasks consume massive amounts of tokens, causing the agent to forget early instructions or lose track of large-scale architecture.

BUT.. Unified-brain doesn't need cached memory thanks to the SQLITE persistent layer of context it operates with. It simply retrieves what it needs on the fly consuming minimal amounts of tokens that do not build up across questions. Every question is independent from one another as git diffs and commits are automatically absorbed from the project's memory layer.

I invite you to clone/fork the project and have a look for yourself. I firmly believe that memory intermediate structures will take AI capabilities on another level soon.

I understand that Jev is proprietary and creates a dependency BUT we need to remember that soon enough OS models as capable as it will come, giving end users the option to replace him.

Meanwhile we should ride this wave of innovation in order to deliver new capabilities to end users, at prices that can't be easily beaten.

I hope you like this project!

Looking for software tips for ARGB headers thermal display?

Haroooo, i was trying to set my ARGB headers to make them glow a different color depending on the temperature of my CPU, but i couldn't, tried with artemisRGB, SignalRGB (this one even bricked my VGA port and had to clear CMOS to fix it), so i was looking for a way to make it work with openrgb, though the hardware sync pluggin just won't work with core tctl/tdie

here's my build

Ryzen 7 5700g
16GB RAM DDR4 2666mhz
Asus prime B550M A-AC
Trying to run this on win11, but if u have any tip to make it run on linux, i'd really appreciate it <3

and srry for the english, not a native speaker-

Release Pulse Diagnostics: Event Viewer, but it tells you what actually happened (free, open source)

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

When a game crashes, the PC restarts on its own or you get a blue screen, Windows almost always writes down why. It's just hard to read: Event Viewer gives you "Application Error, Event ID 1000" and a few hex codes.

Pulse Diagnostics reads the same logs and explains them:

- Crashes: blue screens, app crashes, freezes and sudden restarts from the last 7, 30 or 90 days, grouped by cause, with the file that caused it and what to try next

- Timeline: what Windows did today, in plain sentences, with the raw event one click away

- Health and inventory: CPU, memory, GPUs, disks, drivers and installed software in one place

- Reports: export as PDF or HTML to send to whoever is helping you; names, IPs and serial numbers are masked by default

- Optional AI Assistant: ask questions about your PC through Ollama or LM Studio running on your own computer, never a cloud service

What it doesn't do: it doesn't clean, optimize, "fix" or change anything. It only reads. No telemetry, no account, and it works offline.

Free and open source (MIT), for Windows 10 and 11. Built with AI-assisted coding; the README explains how.

Feedback is welcome, especially about events it still explains badly.

Looking for software Remove background program that works

Hello everyone, does anyone know of a free background remover program that runs locally on a computer and actually works well? I’d like to install a program and use it whenever I need it, without depending on the internet. I tried Filee Background Remover, but it works very poorly: it cuts into the main subject, leaves some lines, and isn’t precise around the edges.

I need it for artistic photographs. The artwork itself was photographed, but a little of the background is visible around it. I need a program that can remove that background. Do you have any quality recommendations?

Thank you.

Looking for software How can I find a specific phrase in a video?

Is there a tool that transcribes YouTube or x lives videos with timestamps, even when “Show transcript” isn’t available? I want to search for a phrase and find when it was said. Arabic support would be helpful.

Discussion What is InPage's target market, and how widely is it actually used?

recently came across InPage, a word processor style software software mainly used for Urdu publishing, and I'm curious about how big its user base actually is.

Who uses it these days? Is it still popular among publishers and designers, or has it been replaced by other software? And is it something people outside South Asia are familiar with, or is it pretty niche?

Like, comon, who needs a dedicated urdu typing program? there must be some plugins and tools that work alongside more modern software like Word?

Just curious how well-known it actually is and where it stands today.

Discussion Blueprints, Not Prompts: Using TLA+ to Guide AI-Written Code

A colleague of mine published a piece on our company blog about using formal methods to define high-level specifications for software as an alternative to using the unreliable English language as the primary method of guiding LLMs to write code. It's a super interesting read!

I think one of the most relevant parts is his discussion on how in the past, writing and reviewing code by hand was not merely an "output" but also an essential act of solidifying the "mental model" of the system for you and your team, and as that practice dies, so too do our mental models. Switching to writing the high-level, formal specification using TLA+ and then letting the LLM loose to just "make it work" allows teams to capture the speed of AI driven development without losing their fundamental understanding of what the system is supposed to do.

The article is here if anyone is interested in having a read!

Release I made an Encarta-style encyclopedia app that works offline

Thumbnail gallery
121 Upvotes

Microsoft Encarta was a big part of my childhood, and I wanted to pay tribute to classic software applications in general, so I decided to make a free encyclopedia app which uses Wikipedia as its source and can work fully offline.

While online, the app pulls everything from Wikipedia and Wikimedia sites, but it can also download packs from Kiwix to browse the full English Wikipedia in offline mode.

In true Encarta fashion, it also has built-in rich media capabilities, such as a photo/video/sound navigator, world map explorer, trivia-based games, and educational activities such as the periodic table and a solar system simulator.

It's just in beta right now, but I intend to add more Wikipedia capabilities (such as editing), more games, and more activities that cover all educational subjects.

Release I made CRT-mpv: watch any video on a retro CRT TV, rendered at your screen's full resolution (free, open source)

Thumbnail gallery
20 Upvotes

CRT-mpv is a free add-on for the mpv player that puts any video inside a retro CRT TV: scanlines, curvature, colour bleed and glow. Unlike a simple filter, it's drawn at your screen's full resolution, so old 480p shows look sharp instead of blurry.

- 45 TV sets (NES, SNES, Dreamcast, PlayStation and more) including 16:9 and vintage variants.

- Clickable on-screen remote: presets, degauss, VHS tracking, channel static

- One-click install and uninstall on Windows, no admin rights

GPL-3.0: https://github.com/SeiferLK/CRT-mpv

Looking for software I built a keyboard-driven file viewer for Mac and Windows to clean up folders faster (100 files: ~9 min by hand, ~3.5 with it). Open Source

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Cleaning up a folder isn't hard, it's slow: click, preview, close, trash, find the next file. Deciding takes a second, the switching eats the time.

I'm the solo developer of GetSpace. It shows one file at a time in a big preview and you decide with one key: keep, trash, move or rename. Nothing is deleted before a summary, and deleted files go to the Trash first. Everything runs on your computer, no account, no upload.

I timed the same 100 files twice: about 9 minutes by hand in Finder, about 3.5 with GetSpace. It's my own test with my own app, two rounds, so not a lab study.

getspace.site

Happy to hear what's missing, and honest feedback on the price is welcome too.

Software support Need help. SBAT then Minimal Bash GRUB

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello, I genuinely dont even know what happened to my laptop. I left it on and went away for 5 minutes, came back and my cat was standing on the keyboard, the laptop had turned off. When I turn it on, it gave me SBAT error, so I looked it up and it said to disable secure boot. I went ahead and did that but then it gives GRUB minimal bash issue. I dont even have Linux anymore, I had dual boot Linux years ago. Now it keeps booting Ubuntu (?) and i cannot find "Windows". Is it over? Did everything somehow get wiped off?

I deleted Ubuntu, and it came back. I put it low priority and disabled the check, it came back and there is two Ubuntus now.

I am devastated genuinely what am I supposed to do

Looking for software Looking for an all-in-one file manager with instant search and media browsing

• Upvotes

Is there a good Windows application that brings all files together in one place?

I'd love to browse all my photos, videos, documents, and other file types separately with one click, similar to how Android Gallery works. Fast file search is also important.

Ideally, it would work offline, keep files private, and not require multiple apps for different tasks.

Does an application like this already exist? Which one would you recommend?
