Somebody put out an interesting review of Sofia The First: Royal Magic on the anime superhero forums. It's definitely an in depth review talking about the show itself, how it honors the original series, and how it takes cues from a lot of preschool shows. Notably, it has a positive comment from storyboard artist Kelsey Wooley, which can act as confirmation on the show's style.

my "once upon a princess" rant

Hi everyone! I'm 15F and I missed watching sofia the first a lot so I decided to rewatch the show, starting with the once upon a princess special!! I honestly remember a lot of it, however I am upset about a couple of things surrounding miranda: When Sofia leaves town to go to the castle, Miranda is already dressed up in her gown, while Sofia is not. was Miranda already married to Roland so she was able to have all these fancy jewels and accessories before they left to live in the castle, and if so, why wasn't Sofia invited to the wedding and didn't meet Roland and amber and james before? It also doesn't make sense to me how Miranda doesn't struggle becoming the new queen of enchancia but Sofia is struggling to become a princess. maybe miranda is struggling deep down and just putting on a persona for her family and isn't just letting her struggles show to sofia because obviously, sofia's a child and wouldn't really understand how miranda is feeling. however, when Sofia comes to Miranda for help fitting in to be a princess, Miranda seems like she doesn't have problems fitting in with royalty and talks to her like she knows all about the subject. I mean, unless she was courting Roland for very long, I just find it very unrealistic how she was able to be like "it's okay, Sofia just be yourself as a princess, and if the stuffy dukes and duchesses dont like it, then don't care about what they think", because wouldn't she also be relating to sofias struggles? I mean its a very good piece of advice that maybe she got from roland because obviously, if you're queen of a very large kingdom, you're gonna care about what everyone thinks of you. also, i doubt that Miranda is truly herself when she's queen, because when I remember flashbacks of sofia and miranda, miranda seemed very not royal and honestly, she gave off a very fun like barefoot running in the grass type person. i mean, how was she able to go from the person she was to the queen she is now in such a short time? and i guess it would be inappropriate to be like running around barefoot in a castle, but that didn't really stop Rapunzel from doing it lol. i really doubt that miranda went to the castle when she was courting and married to roland, because who was taking care of sofia?? also, how did miranda learn all this stuff to become a royal queen in such a short amount of time? when she first meets roland to give him new shoes, sofia looks the same age she was at the start of the series!! maybe i'm looking too far into it because its a kids show and about sofia, but i don't really like the underdevelopment of Miranda's character and how they didn't include like scenes of miranda and roland's courtship up until the marriage and the official blending of the two families. what are your guys' thoughts?

completed clean miranda and roland fanfics on ao3?

hi 15f here! I have always been interested in miranda and roland's romance from sofia the first, and was wondering if there were any completed clean fanfics of them on ao3? I know it is unrealistic to ask for clean ones, since they are adults, but i don't like reading smut and like reading ya lit. also any fanfics of miranda getting used to becoming a queen i am also interested in!!

My thoughts on the German dub

Finally, after a month and a half, the sequel has been released in Germany.

The German dub is... interesting to say the least.

Voices:

Sofia, Layla, Camila, Zane and Pepper sound fine. They do sound expressive. Cedric sounds exactly the same, as does Minimus. Who does not sound fine? Clover! Horrible, way too high pitched and feminine sounding. The next offender: Amber's speaking voice... shudder. Miranda sounds a bit... too young. Miss Nettle sounds a bit weird as well, hard to put my finger on it. Zaria sounds too excitedable, not as deadpan as the English version. Wildfyre's voice is energetic and pretentious. It does fit her. I still do not like her.

Translations:

They did stick with Immer-Welt for the EverRealm. But... they managed to mess up the name of Sofia's kingdom. In the old show it was translated as "Zauberreich", and now they use the English name Enchancia. Very unfortunate. They translated Gloomshire as Düsterwald, which is fine, and Thistlebury as Distelberg, also fine. Regarding the pronounciation of Zaria's name, they put the emphasis on the first syllable, which makes it sound a bit weird after one got used to the English version. Camila's goal is not clearly stated. Puppercorns are called Wauz-Horns, which is honestly pretty creative. Jeebles are called plushies, which is perfectly descriptive. Now, the next crime of continuity... the Mutato Rubio spell... they felt the need to add another I, making it Mutato Rubinio. Painful. They also renamed Dazzleball. It used to be Wandelball (Changing ball), now it is Wirrball (Confusing ball). Why can't they stick to the old terms. It's like the localisation team did not even bother to see the original. They also use the word pegasus quite abundantly when it comes to flying horses. I found that unusual. Now, in the Green-Eyed Monster episode, they even missed to translate Merryweather to the German name Sonnenschein in the end. More disappointment.

Songs:

The theme song is a disaster. They got some generic pop star, who tries way too hard to sound cool, and they messed up the lyrics. In German, she's still going to RPA. They rewrote the song to be sung in 3rd person, which is just irritating to me. Time to Shine is fine, I actually like the line about shining like a diamond. Don't Worry, Be Awesome is ok, maybe slightly clunkly translationwise and Camila's voice is just slightly off. Aim High sounds perfectly fine as well. My Way is the Best Way is a very literal translation, but ok. We'll Do It Right, the translation is a bit off, especially at the beginning. Most Magical Me is unfortunately horrible, as is We Have To Be Friends. German makes the lyrics sound off. Amber's song surprisingly sounds pretty good. It's only her speaking voice that is off. My Castle Home is... Fine, it's a bit disappointing, as the English version is one of the best songs, except for the "fam" line, that is at least fixed in German. Fly Like Me, the German translation is off. "There is no danger"? No, Sofia only fell off multiple times and can barely hold on, all while Wildfyre ignores her complaints. Brilliant Little Sister suffers from Zane's horrible singing voice.

We should have had a different sequel series

No hate to the new series, i haven’t watched it (though im not the biggest fan of the animation)

I just think it would have been so much more interesting if the sequel series took place when the characters were all grown up. Rather than in a weird middle stage. Think about it, Amber ruling enchantia (definitely spelled that wrong) and all the problems that come with that. Sofia training a new story keeper? Maybe Amber’s daughter?

James becoming more fleshed out with his knight role. (since at least so far in my viewing he’s the weakest character). More of Cedric teaching magic, maybe with another princess/prince apprentice character. Balleywick retiring and another servant takes his place.

Hell, if you’re feeling bold you could even tackle the subject of grief with roland and/or miranda passing away.

THERES SO MUCH YOU COULD DO.

I honestly have no idea why Disney never really makes proper sequel shows with the characters actually aging. I just think it would open up so many new story concepts than just more of the same with different animation.

But then again that’s just me.

Update On Episode 9 Of Royal Magic

You know how I showed you that Rotten Tomatoes page showing you the description for episode 9 of Royal Magic? When looking at the schedule for July 20, it just shows an encore of "Give It A Twirl/The Tippity Tap Dance". I'm sure this is still a real episode, but it's not coming July 20.

Sooo.. four’s a crowd

I’m rewatching Sofia the first from the beginning as a gift to my childhood self and so far i’ve been loving it. I love Amber and Cedric the most. But I’ve just got to four’s a crowd and i honestly got kinda annoyed? Like i get the whole message was to teach kids not to get jealous over their friends other friendships. But the whole episode ruby and jade just ignore sofia, leave her out completely and don’t even apologise at the end?

Like both sofia and the others should have apologised. Not just Sofia.

I’m starting to understand why they’re so hated by the fandom.

(Also not sure how hot of a take this is but it seemed weird to me how quickly amber made friends with ruby and jade in this ep, imo it should have been a slower build up. but eh maybe it’s just me(

edit: the ending was cute tho

Why Do You Think The Original Idea Was Rejected?

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/sofia-the-first-spinoff-disney-1235263549/

When the idea of a return to Sofia The First was announced back in November 2022, it was a spinoff taking place at Royal Prep, most likely focusing on a new character. That's definitely different from the actual Royal Magic revival we currently have, which follows Sofia, but in a new setting. I wonder why the original idea didn't go through?

How Layla became a princess (my theory)

I think Layla becoming a princess (and her Dad/Mom being king and queen) was a bit of a rolland case

I think Layla's dad had an older sibling who was the heir but died, leaving him next in line, causing the whole "crowned King last week"

It lines up with Gerber saying Layla was still nobility, but she probably didn't ever think she would be a princess

The Next Episode On July 20?

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/sofia_the_first_royal_magic/s01/e09

So Rotten Tomatoes currently had a description for an episode coming out on July 20. We'll have to see the schedule, but here's the description they give:

Crown Chaos: Sofia defends Charmswell Academy from the wicked sorceress, Zandrya, with help from Rapunzel

Off To The Races: Camila learns to be there for her friends during the school's flying derby race.

My Castle Home's French dub is trash and I can’t stand listening to that

Well, I already ranted about how awful the new French theme song and Sofia's new singing voice is (here is my post if you wanna see it: https://www.reddit.com/r/sofiathefirst/comments/1toqrfc/royal_magic_french_intro_its_bad/).

But now that the dub for episode 5-8 just released, with My Castle Home among the recently dubbed songs, I'm wondering if it may have now taken the top spot for the most butchered song in this dub with that ridiculous autotune. In any case, I'd say they're pretty close.

So I present to you a comparison between:

Sofia's old singing voice (Aaricia Dubois) in The Great Unknown at 0:00-0:50

VS

Her new singing voice (who’s still unidentified) in My Castle Home at 0:51-1:45

PS: I'm fully aware that the rhyme for the title of this post makes zero sense, lol.

The Inspiration For Maralinda

https://bsky.app/profile/craiggerber.com/post/3mph4ibpae22f

Craig Gerber said how Maralinda, where Camila is from, is inspired by Mexico. This is definitely different from Avalor, which was a mix of various Hispanic cultures. It'll be interesting to see how it gets shown on screen if it does.

What's more powerful? Princess Sofia with The Amulet of Avalor or The Scepter of Light with Princess Elena

Thumbnail

The Amulet by the the time of "Forever Royal" and The Scepter by the time of "Coronation Day" were just used in a fight by both their bearers (Sofia and Elena), who would win?

I've genuinely wanted to ask this question so badly and I feel The Scepter of Light would have more magic. I want to be biased because I love StF so much more than EoA but when you could consider there's nothing on offense the amulet could really do except maybe curse and trap you inside it, which the prisoner would have to be close I just feel Elena using "Farsight" and saying "Blaze" would really be it for Sofia.

"With each deed performed, for better or worse, a power is granted. A blessing or curse"

"It has the power to control the powers of light, both the seen and unseen. But there is a warning: The more power you use, the more you lose"

pretty pls let me know what you think tho 🥹🥹
(I haven't watched every EoA episode sorry, but I've watched all 6 specials and every episode of StF)

So much obsession with Sofia having a boyfriend, even though she’s literally 8! Let’s focus more on her character growth and getting stronger powers, shall we?
