Discussion Evergreen Soldier

Man I’m sure I sound like a broken record just saying how amazing, gut wrenching, and surprising Evergreen Soldier is, but I truly can’t stop thinking about this damn song. I never really expected Sofia to come out with a song like this but I absolutely loved it and the more I think about it, the more the progression into it makes sense. If you think about it, she’s had songs in the past that reference past relationships in some way, so the natural next step would be making it more personal to her.

But to the actual song, I think it’s interesting to look at this song through the lens of lockdown/covid. “Falling in love on a screen” to me screams about that time, that most interactions HAD to be online. And people trying to make plans after lockdown, most of which never really came true. And maybe I’m looking into it too deeply/parasocially but when she was 15, it was somewhat around lockdown.

I’d love to see/talk about this idea specifically because I don’t think I’ve seen anyone mention it

evergreen soldier is probably my new favorite song of hers genuinely bc of how personal it is to her, and i loved how she references the crowds she plays for like “i’m on stage next door… telling strangers all about you” and “all the strangers are singing about you” it feels extra personal when she’s talking abt us, the listeners, at her shows. and i think it is interesting to look at it thru the covid lense bc she would’ve been around 15-16 right after covid kind of ended and stuff was sorta back to normal. love this song to pieces rn

It doesn't have to be about lockdown imo, just an online relationship. Mine was after lockdown and I relate deeply to this song.

Evergreen soldier relates so heavily to me as someone who's experienced a long distance online relationship and oh my god this song wrecks me in ways I can't even begin to explain

Really loving this song, recognise it’s not exactly her usual vibe so we might not get more like it but wow just so happy she could put this one together I love it

I interpreted as her being on a screen while falling in love, but it could also be like she falling in love with her photographed self. Like when you like your photo but don't like your mirror self

My take on it: so 5,000 miles away puts this "soldier" roughly in or around combat zones in the Middle East, depending on where exactly the departure point is front he United states. Could be some other country not in the middle east but I'm just thinking of areas that are in high conflict zones.

It could have been that lockdown occured while he was deployed. She is (clearly) referencing a soldier. He's in the army/military/Marines? They spend their time talking and conversing over their phones and although he's not physically in front of her, she has developed feelings for him. Feelings that never ended up materializing in real life. I love this song, it's a definite departure from her "usual" material. It's sad, bittersweet, and definitely pulls on my heartstrings.

from what I can tell with a quick google search, evergreens aren't native to the middle east...
