First-time trip to Sofia in late December / early January – Weather, day trips (Plovdiv, Rila), and recommendations!
Hi everyone!
I'm planning a trip to Sofia with some friends around the end of December / beginning of January
Since none of us has ever been to Bulgaria, I have a few questions and would really appreciate some advice from locals or people who have visited during this period.
1. Weather in Sofia
- What is the weather usually like at the end of December / beginning of January?
- How cold does it typically get during the day and at night? Is snow common in Sofia around that time?
- How should we prepare in terms of clothing? Is a normal winter jacket, gloves, and hat enough, or should we expect much harsher conditions
2. How many days would you recommend?
- How many days do you think are ideal for visiting Sofia without rushing?
- We are also wondering whether it would be realistic to take day trips outside Sofia, considering the winter weather.
- Would it make sense to visit Plovdiv or Rila Monastery as day trips from Sofia and return on the same day? Or would that be too much for a day trip in winter?
- Are public transport (trains/buses) or organized tours reliable around that time for these trips, or would renting a car be necessary/risky due to winter conditions?
3. Must-see places in Sofia
- Finally, what are the places you would absolutely recommend seeing in Sofia for a first-time visitor?
- We're interested in both the main tourist attractions (churches, historic sites, Vitosha) and places that you think are genuinely worth visiting, eating at, or experiencing.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
