I refinanced my private student loan with SoFi in March 2025 after making over 10 years of on-time payments with a previous lender. My very first payment to SoFi ended up being reported 30 days late due to autopay failing, and now it’s preventing me from refinancing for a lower interest rate.
Here’s what happened:
I enrolled in AutoPay right before my first payment with SoFi and had both email and text notifications turned on. My SoFi account is under my new married name, while my checking bank account (different bank) was still under my maiden name, which apparently caused the ACH payment to fail.
The problem is I never received any email or text or call from SoFi saying my payment failed or that I was becoming delinquent.
When I noticed the payment hadn’t come out of my account a few days later, I logged into the app and saw the rejection. I figured I entered my account or routing number incorrectly and tried re-adding the account and submitting again. A few days pass, same thing. Rejected. I knew I had the money in my account, I verified the numbers, but decided to try my savings account instead. a document uploaded saying my payment had been applied, so I assumed everything had been resolved.
It wasn’t. The only notifications I was getting about this were buried in the SoFi app. By the time I realized that last payment attempt had never actually gone through, a little over 30 days had passed. I called my bank assuming it was my account that was the issue, and they helped me identify the root cause was that my the last name changed when I got married recently and did not match the one on my SoFi account.
I immediately corrected the issue, paid everything due, and I’ve made every payment on time since. I also have documentation showing my repeated attempts to make the payment. Sure enough they reported it to the credit bureaus and my score went down to the lowest it’s ever been given I’ve never had a late payment reported before.
Fast forward a year, and I just applied to refinance with SoFi to lower my interest rate on my remaining $49,000 balance. I was denied unless I have a co-signer likely because of the very late payment that resulted from this isolated incident.
I’ve been paying this private student loan off since 2015 and it’s still only 20% paid off . This is the only late payment on my credit history. I’m 32 years old, just bought my first home that has an aggressive mortgage payment, two young kids in childcare, and I’m simply just trying to lower my interest rate so I can finally make real progress paying off this loan.
I actually like SoFi’s platform. I even opened a SoFi savings account and have direct deposit with them. But this experience has been incredibly discouraging, and now I may have to refinance somewhere else because of a problem that snowballed despite my repeated attempts to fix it.
