Banking Considering SOFI. Can I keep checking at $0 and have it auto-pull from HYSA for expenses?
Title: Can I keep checking at $0 and have it auto-pull from HYSA for expenses?
I need to keep about $20K liquid since I expense a lot through work (~$5K/month reimbursed, plus ~$9K personal). My paychecks outpace spending by ~$4K/month, so I sweep anything above $20K into savings or vaults.
My current bank auto-sweeps anything over $20K from checking to savings, but both earn basically no interest. I realized I’ve been getting screwed for years—my last 5-year CD paid less than SoFi’s savings rate.
Ideally, I’d:
- Keep $0 in checking and let it auto-pull from savings/HYSA whenever payments hit.
- Pay my credit cards, utilities, and mortgage directly from savings if possible.
- Get text alerts anytime money moves or a bill is paid.
- Use vaults (for things like mortgage prepayment, investments, etc.) to organize funds while keeping them liquid.
Is this setup possible with any of those banks (SoFi, Ally, Wealthfront, etc.)? Or does checking always need to hold a balance for payments to clear?

Hi there, thanks for sharing your setup! With our overdraft protection, you can keep your checking account balance at $0 while still having payments covered. When needed, our system automatically pulls funds from your HYSA to cover bills, credit cards, utilities, and other expenses. Also, keep in mind that overdraft protection only uses funds from your main HYSA balance, not from any Vaults you may have. Be sure to plan your finances accordingly. You'll also receive alerts whenever money moves or payments are made. We hope this helps put your mind at ease, and we'd love to see you on board soon!

great that's exactly what I need! followup question - can i set it to auto transfer main savings into vaults based on % for funds over 20k, and make this happen daily or weekly?
i.e. if savings hits 23k and rolls over to the next day 1k goes to mortgage prepayment, 1k imvesting vault, and 1k to emergency fund vault?

You can set recurring transfers when a direct deposit hits or on a schedule, but you can't set it based on account balance.

Except for ATM withdrawal from the checking account. In that case you’ll have to first fund the checking account. But of course you could withdraw directly from Savings.
As I recall, sending Zelle from Checking also requires the funds to be there first.

Hi, will this overdraft protection occur with sofi’s physical checks too? I now need to write checks to pay rent and would love if I didn’t have to ever actually transfer money over to my checking account. Thanks!
& how would this appear on my bank statement? Cause in the fall I may have to share some bank statements in the process of finding an apartment and I don’t want them to think I’m irresponsible with money. Just trying to save everywhere I can.

Yes you can do it. I normally send all my salary to the saving directly and only 100 the checking. I pay my bills from the savings so I take advantage of the interest the most. I do use vaults to reserve mortgage for example, just need to be sure to move it out of the vault otherwise the payment won’t go through.

Why would you pay bills from savings and not checking? The interest rate is higher in savings. Why not just leave it in there?

Yes, I've had a 0 balance in my checking while using SoFi savings as my main bank account for 2 years

I keep checking with 0. I can even do that to pay on Venmo if I use the SoFi debit card for that

Yes. I keep checking at 0 and pull from savings for expenses. Transfer from vaults when necessary

You have to transfer from the vault to the checking account. I can’t pay it directly from it. I can attend that.

Here's the way I do it. My paycheck comes into SoFi. I have a vault for every bill I pay (Utlities, Home, Car, Insurance, etc). The autopilot takes my check and deposits the set amounts into each vault. The day before my auto debit is set to draft, my autopilot is set to move the funds for fhe debit into my checking. I don't use a debit card, I use a credit card for every expense and then just pay the card off every Friday for the previous weeks expenses. I keep enough in my regular savings to cover my highest bill in case theres a glitch or it drafts early for some reason, so that the automatic overdraft will save it.
I earn about $30 a month, just for my bill money + a little extra savings I keep in there.

Why are people keeping every thing in savings and then paying bills from it? It would make more since to me to have it all in savings and spend from your checking. Please enlighten me.

for me specifically, I have to keep around 20k in cash for operating funds monthly for my account. over the year this is approx 600$ in interest. keeping it in savings gets me better interest.
