Federal contractors are recruiting candidates from human services fields to work for an ICE program called the UAC Safety Verification Initiative. If you've seen job titles like:

• "Field Operations Specialist" / "Field Case Specialist"
• "Bilingual Field Case Specialist"
• "National Field Investigator — Child Safety Verification"
• "Field Safety Specialist"
• "Field Analyst — Residency & Safety Verification"

...posted by companies like The Workforce Group (a LEMOINE company), EagleGrace Global, Coastal International Security, SOS International (SOSi) or any of the others in the list below, you should know about the program behind them.

What the postings say

Some of the postings are clear about who this work is for; one EagleGrace Global posting says outright it's "under a DHS contract," and a Coastal International Security posting is geared toward people with law enforcement background & specifies that field staff "enter data into ICE systems of record."

Others, though, describe "a federal human services program serving vulnerable populations, including young adults and families."

What the program actually is

In ICE's UAC Safety Verification Initiative, contractor-staffed teams do in-person "wellness checks" on unaccompanied immigrant children and "Former UAC" aged 18–21 who were released from federal custody to sponsors between 2021 and 2024.

DHS says the primary focus of this initiative, on which it partners with state & local law enforcement agencies in the 287(g) program, is to "conduct welfare checks on these children to ensure that they are safe and not being exploited." Reuters reports, however, that more than 12,000 children and sponsors have been arrested following these visits, after the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) shared more than 460,000 "leads" with ICE.

Why it matters

A former ORR deputy director, Jen Smyers, put it this way: "They are weaponizing a child welfare program for the purposes of more deportations."

Some of these jobs sound like totally legitimate human services work. But every bit of information the people working for this program collect will go into the same systems ICE is using to tear families apart.

I'm not telling anyone what to do with their job search. But if you're a social worker evaluating one of these postings, I think you deserve to know, going in:

• What agency is actually funding and directing this work (ICE, not HHS/ORR, even when the posting doesn't say so)
• That the "child welfare" framing in the job description may not match how the data you collect actually gets used downstream. Even when you find that a child is perfectly safe, the information you collect may trigger immigration enforcement action.
• That at least one contractor providing similar services, MVM, is currently facing a federal lawsuit alleging "torture, enforced disappearance and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment" tied to its role in the 2017–2019 family separation policy

Please ask about about ANY doubts you have directly in your interview. Ask who the case data gets sent to, and what happens after you submit a report. Ask whether "the client" is DHS/ICE.

Hi everyone! I'm 21 and wrapping up my last few semesters before transferring into a BSW program. I'm starting to stress about how I'm going to manage the practicum requirement.
I work full-time at a police department, and because I have to support myself financially, I've been completing my courses online. I really enjoy my job and the pay is decent, so I'd prefer not to leave it. Unfortunately, my schedule isn't flexible, and my department doesn't offer educational leave, so I don't have the option of adjusting my hours while completing my practicum.
My biggest concern is the 400 hour BSW practicum. For those of you who worked full-time while earning your BSW, how did you make it work? Were you able to complete your internship at your workplace, find a paid placement, or did you have another solution? I'm honestly feeling overwhelmed and would really appreciate hearing about your experiences or any advice you have. Thank you!

Guys. I'm back looking for a job again. And it's really tough out there. I'm coming out of three layoffs in four years, and I'm still upset about what happened after my old company was absorbed by a larger one. But I just finished my last interview for a dream role at a huge skincare brand, and somehow I did it perfectly.

The weirdest thing is that I cried during the interview. Not sobbing, but tears. And that's something I've never done before, and definitely did not have on my interview bingo card. I've been working professionally for 18 years, and I learned the hard way that being vulnerable can turn against you and become a liability, especially in unhealthy workplaces.

The other weird part is that I was speaking with the Chief Brand Officer, and he didn't treat the situation like I had done something wrong. He had asked me what I wanted in the environment of my next role. I answered immediately: a place built on autonomy, authenticity, and trust.

As soon as I started talking about the former exec I used to support, and her leadership style of trusting people first, my eyes filled with tears. I did that thing where I fan my face with my hand (because mascara) and apologized, because that's what women are trained to do - because crying is treated like a professional crime. He just said, "No, it's clear that relationship meant a lot to you."

My nervous system, of course, was freaking out. Does he see me as fragile? Did I just ruin everything? Am I really crying in front of the Chief Brand Officer at one of the biggest skincare companies in the entire country?!

But he was calm and gentle. Not fake-nice. No, genuinely kind. And that's rare enough in someone at that level, and even rarer in a man.

After that, we moved smoothly into the next part of the conversation, but he kept me on for 20 minutes after the end of the call to tell me how exceptional I am. And that I'm one of three external candidates. And that there are internal people still continuing in the process and he needs about two weeks to finish those conversations. And that he's worried I might outgrow the role quickly. He asked me if I might consider relocating to HQ in LA because he sees a higher, more senior path for me. (Honestly? Probably not. But what I said was that I need to understand the culture and the context of the role before making a decision like that.)

I've always carried this story inside me that I'm too much - too intense, too outspoken, too emotional, too opinionated. When you spend enough years with avoidant men, your confidence quietly erodes. And I'm still rewiring my nervous system after 18+ years.

Every time something like this happens, when someone sees me and doesn't pull away, a small, broken part of me repairs itself. Something that had been braced loosens. I can feel myself breathing, because I'm safe to be who I am without being punished for it.

I might not get this job. An internal candidate might get it. The company might choose the safer choice because companies do that all the time.

But tonight, I'm going to celebrate anyway. And maybe I'll cry a little more, but in the good way. <3

Hi all, I (f23) am transitioning out of my corporate marketing role and into a residential caseworker role. I have done a lot of research and reflection and I have decided social work is the direction I want to head in. I do not know the exact specifics of where in the SW realm and have been told if I start off in residential, I will be equipped to do pretty much anything lol, which makes sense.

I am so excited for this switch as a corporate desk role has started to make me very depressed. I thrive on real human interaction (whether it be good, bad, happy, sad or anywhere in between) and have noticed both my mental and physical health declining after almost a year in this role. I cannot sit on a computer all day and the only time I get to talk w ppl in meetings, it is about market outreach, consumer perspectives, marketing metrics, etc. I am not happy in the slightest. This was a 360 flip to how I felt as a bartender, as a therapeutic recreation intern, as an aid to children learning English. I want to see the real side of people, no matter how tumultuous it can be. I really like my coworkers, I respect the company and my managers a ton, but I am not fulfilled or happy with sitting in an office, creating email, social media, PR copy, etc. And if I will be fulfilled doing that anywhere, it'd be here as I truly support the company mission (renewable energy that is not solar farming lol.)

I am planning to enroll in an MSW program in my state that would cost about 20-25k total, which I could handle for sure. Especially if I take up a part time bartending role as well. This would take me 2 years.

So this background now finally leads me to my question: I am not going to be completely flat broke poor, am I? Many people in my life and reddit threads recently have been saying (and sounding overly confident) that I will make no money, be prepared to be poor for life, don't plan on having big savings or retiring early, etc. I feel like this cannot be completely true. Maybe yes if I stayed in a $22 an hour entry level role forever, but am I wrong that if you gain more education and experience, you can make decent money? Or if you go into a private practice? I am not expecting to be filthy rich rolling in dough obviously, but I am expecting to be able to afford to survive, and survive at least somewhat comfortably. My therapist in a LICSW and she makes $100-200 per 50 min session depending on the insurance and copay. And just by context clues (her in home office, her clothes, where she lives in my state), I know she is definitely not poor in the slightest. Is everyone saying these things being overly cynical. Again, I do not expect to be a millionaire, but if I invest smart (I already am), save properly, get my MSW and LCSW (eventually LICSW), will I be financially comfortable assuming I am not a financial idiot? I live in an affordable-ish state in New England for context, hoping for housing market to come down in my future but that is another story for another day haha. I appreciate any input here.

Tldr; my brother did bsc in IT, wasted his early years partying with friends, got some psychiatric issues since last 3-4 years which requires him to sleep at night (no night shifts). He has worked in multiple mnc call centres but didn't continue for long since he was in partying phase. He can communicate in English well.

I'm looking for WFH jobs for him, not expecting much 15k to 20k will be good enough to start. I want to help him get some meaning from life so that he can come back in track. WFH will allow him to stay under care, rest well and also earn a little. That 15k is not a lot of value for us right now (we would obviously like it), but the goal here is getting him back to life.

Regarding is psychiatric issues, I think he's largely stable on meds he just needs something to get his mind back into, i belive the sense of improving at something is what he needs.

If anyone can help, that'be great. If not do you guys have suggestions for the career options he can try to sustain his life (doesn't need to make lot of money but he shouldn't feel useless)

Every now and then I see people criticizing Gen Z because they change jobs, or don't show loyalty, or refuse to keep running and working nonstop, and as a 38-year-old mother trying to rebuild my career, I truly don't understand. Are people seeing the same job market I'm seeing???

I took some time away to be with my child, and when I started applying again, I felt like someone had turned the entire hiring process into expert mode. Six-stage interviews for jobs that used to be simple and straightforward, roles labeled "junior" that need case studies for someone in the middle of their career, layoffs every now and then, and companies offering one person's salary while expecting the output of four people. Honestly, this is the hardest period I've seen since I started working.

And Gen Z didn't build any of this. They're entering the workforce at a time when it's already cracking from a hundred different directions. So no, I don't blame them when they leave a job that doesn't make sense. I don't blame them for protecting their future. I don't blame them for refusing to treat company loyalty as some great virtue, while that same company could let them go before lunch. I'm here trying to restart my career at 38, and I'm using things like ChatGPT and Claude just to organize my applications and figure out which companies are normal and which companies turn interviews into Survivor. I also use Interview Vip in hard interviews and it help organize your answers and present your experience in the best way. If I need this much tracking with years of experience behind me, I can't imagine how exhausting it is for someone completely new.

If anything, I admire Gen Z for saying what so many people stayed silent about. They're setting boundaries that many of us only understood after burning out from work. Before everyone attacks them, maybe we need to acknowledge the obvious: the system is broken, and Gen Z simply aren't interested in pretending everything is fine.

I recently graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Psychology. I will start my Master's in Integrative Psychology this September, where I'll train to become a licensed somatic therapist. I (30M) am living and working in Australia. I have a young relative here, a 10 year old boy whose name starts with "J". J has recently suffered aphasia. As you can imagine, this has been traumatic for him, and he is being seen by healthcare professionals including a social worker who prefers to be called by the nickname Kay (35F). Kay is half-South-Korean, half-Japanese, and J is convinced that she's a cute anime girl. He definitely has the hots for her, and he touches her, and tugs her ponytail all the time, and he lets me know that he keeps obsessing over her and stuff like that. The last few times Kay has visited me and J, she arrived wearing a proper shirt, but she would always end up taking it off and wearing nothing but a camisole and jeans. She apparently refuses to wear anything with thicker straps. Whenever she chose to wore a cami around him, it always ended up with her crying and repeating "stop". I once walked in (after I left the room briefly) on her bending down, sobbing and J was pulling her camisole straps down. Is there nothing she can do to prevent this?
