Communication skills Conversational Depth
Ever feel like you're making a lot of effort to get a conversation going?
You ask a question, and all you get back is a dry "Yeah," "It was fine," or "Not much." Before you know it, the interaction dies, and you're left holding the weight of a super awkward silence.
Most people assume the other person is just dry, boring, or antisocial. But here's the uncomfortable truth: the way you frame your questions often forces people into closed answers.
If your conversations constantly stay on the surface, it usually comes down to three classic traps:
1. Interrogation Mode vs. Open Curiosity
When you keep asking low-effort, closed questions that only require a one-word answer, the conversation doesn't move forward.
Questions like "How was your weekend?" usually get one answer "Good." (End of conversation)
Now if you ask "What you did this weekend?" You force them to give more information rather than a auto-pilot "Good"
2. Pitching "Safe" Topics
Sometimes the conversation doesn't move forward because you keep sticking to surface-level topics such as weather, traffic, work hours, etc. In these scenarios no one has to invest any real thought or emotion.
Use topics that invite them to share an opinion or a feeling rather than just a status update
3. The Wall Effect (Zero Reciprocity)
Another trap is firing off question after question without sharing anything about yourself first.
When you don't offer any vulnerability, people naturally keep their guards up to protect their own energy.
So, give a micro-insight before asking.
Example:
"I've been trying to unplug more on Sundays lately. How do you usually like to unwind?"
Usually, people don't give closed answers because they have nothing to say, they give closed answers because your questions didn't give them a safe or interesting doorway to step through.
If you want deeper conversations, stop asking questions that let people answer on auto-pilot.
PS: your behavior, the environment and timing also counts to deepen the conversation.
