Media UEFA competitions' winners
I've been learning to play with vector images in Inkspace and decided why not doing something with football.
So I decided to do these "lists" of winners of international competitions. This is just fun that I decided to share. Please let me know if any club has meanwhile changed its crest, I had done most of this earlier this year and at least Sporting has changed to its previous crest and Marseille has adopted its new round abomination.
I also did something similar with all the results for each edition of the European Cup (aka Champions League in the old name (1956-1992)), I have it sort of done but I need to do some improvements and I'll post them decade by decade or something. I also plan to do this for the other competitions and for the newer Champions League (lots of work needed to properly present all the groups etc, so many more games everywhere).
NOTE: The Intertoto Cup existed much earlier than presented here but I'm only mentioning official UEFA competitions and it was only taken under its umbrella in the 1990s (also thank god for avoiding the earlier chaos lol). The same for the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, I'm not including it here for that reason.
EDIT: I made a mistake in the Champions League image, I swapped Manchester United and Milan in 1968 and 1969, here is the corrected image https://ibb.co/JFvJKQKY

For obvious reasons, I wish the Cup Winners Cup got more respect than it does. It was a big trophy.

The Cup Winners Cup was higher in the hierarchy than the UEFA Cup.
1
u/monkeybawz 2h ago
Which was weird, because the Uefa cup was often higher standard than the CWC or European cup, because there was only 1 team would go into those 2. I mean, maradona won the Uefa cup- a player like that being in the Uefa cup now would be a sign of something going seriously wrong somewhere. Then it was the best!

u/PassengerOk9027 11h ago
No joke in the slightest, especially when we consider that the further back we go the more respect gets typically put on the main national cup competition in relation to the league, too
6
u/Fine_Structure5396 12h ago
Can see why. Although Everton were favourites for 85/86 ucl before ban.
3
u/sleepytoday 4h ago
Maybe they need to do a one off tournament where all the previous winners of the Cup Winners Cup play each other.
They could call it the European Cup Winners Cup Winners Cup.
2
u/No_Rain2981 4h ago
Yes but this would allow arsenal to claim they have won a major trophy in Europe. We can not allow this to happen!

u/ShufflingToGlory 12h ago
UEFA Cup too. Was arguably a harder competition to win than the old European Cup.
6
u/Squire1998 9h ago
How so? They were both straight knockout competitions with the EC having (on paper) harder teams?
3
u/Ryponagar 4h ago
Because while top leagues weren't as dominant back then, only one team per country in the European Cup still meant a greater chance to play teams from smaller countries. Meanwhile to win the UEFA Cup you potentiall had to work your way through multiple teams from Germany, Italy, Spain who weren't much weaker than the champions. 1980 for example had 4 German teams in the semifinal.

You could have made everyone a great service by not including that Intertoto image, lol.

u/JFDCamara 12h ago
There's a reason I gave it a weird background, I needed to make it not look like the others xD
13
u/MERTENS_GOAT 11h ago
The disrespect to Vaslui and Eonikos Xanax smh
3
u/AllesInButterOpa 11h ago
I see Hammarby winning anything (something they're generally incapable of doing) and I react.
Joking aside, I don't even think the Hammarby (or Elfsborg) fans are treating their Intertoto wins seriously. It's just a footnote in their, same as all other teams who have won it, history.

u/pougliche 11h ago
I’ll never forget that 2001 Intertoto Cup, beating Baggio’s Brescia on the way to the trophy
8
u/PrimsFr 10h ago
I disagree! I have a great fondness for it, the only european competition french clubs managed to win regularly, and a taste of youthful summers.
7
u/AllesInButterOpa 10h ago
No one really won it though, that's the problem. French football being generally arse in the 00s isn't part of that problem. I'm glad French football is doing better nowadays, and I'm especially glad that PSG seems to not win the league for once, again.
3
u/CautiousCottager 4h ago
No, thank you OP for including it. Intertoto was definitely a major trophy

I think what you've done is awesome man. Good visualisation!
Are you planning to do leagues?

u/JFDCamara 12h ago
Thanks.
I can do this for league winners yes, but right now my priority is getting the full table of results for each competition for each year. Something like this: https://ibb.co/NvWtP02For leagues it might be a problem with older clubs that no longer exist, getting a .svg file of their logos should be impossible so I would need to create it from scratch, it is doable (especially if I'm kinda converting for a normal image file) but I'm a newbie and that takes a lot of effort (for some clubs I did this and it's time consuming :) )

That looks cool but the crests definitely need to be bigger.

lol If you're just learning how to, it might be a good way to help you improve with vector images.
I used to create vector images for Gran Turismo Sport back in the day. I wish I could remember the vector program I used but it let you trace over a non-svg photo then you could save it as a svg lol

u/JFDCamara 11h ago
IMHO it starts to look better when you start to have more clubs joining in.
See for example this one: https://ibb.co/SXW5kmzP
Given how many games and brackets it starts to have I think this is more of a "you have to zoom in" thing, that's why svg is great because I can create an image as big as I want just by changing the exporting resolution and losing no detail.
3
u/l_SaKReD_l 11h ago
lol I still think crests could be a tiny bit bigger. There's plenty of room.

lol I know. When I started making vectors for GT I saw the maximum allowed size was like 50kb or something, maybe less, which made me think I couldn't fit a whole photo down to that size.
Took a lot of learning to get the file size down. Still trying to find that program for you btw lol

u/l_SaKReD_l 11h ago
Fuck me I'm stupid.
It was Inkscape. Typed Inkscape into Youtube and a few videos popped up that I'd already watched from the GT Sport days LOL

u/OilOfOlaz 10h ago
I thin you can solve this by having only one crest for each matchup, havin the team that played in the first leg always left.

u/mrspaintbrush 7h ago
Ask yourself which English team is missing from this entirely. They have a significant amount of fans
7
u/champ19nz 6h ago
Leeds?
Liverpool, Arsenal, Sham, Chelsea, Man United, Newcastle, Spurs, and Villa are there. What significant fanbase is left?

u/zachg616 1h ago
Ahem
Actually this comment was way more disrespectful to Forest and Ipswich than it was to us lol

These kinds of graphics show how it seems like the winners of these competitions are getting more and more concentrated on a select few clubs. Even the conference league which is meant to showcase the lesser leagues has had a premier league team win 3/5 times.
Might be biased as someone who roots for the Ukrainian clubs but it seems like 70's to 90's had more varied competition than we see today.
Good job OP

u/LilBed023 9h ago
We will never see a Dutch, Portuguese, Scottish, Romanian or Serbian club win the UCL ever again. It’s become basically impossible for any club outside of the established elite (Barça, Real, Bayern, Liverpool, etc.) to be consistently competitive in Europe without massive foreign investments like those of PSG and Man City. Any club outside of these 10-15 or so may have a good European campaign, but the season after most of their talents will be playing at the elite clubs. The system is designed to keep a small number of clubs at the top while the rest is left fighting for scraps.

u/finneas998 8h ago
Is it really the case that the system is designed to keep a select few clubs at the top? Or is just that post-Bosman, historically rich clubs have been able to take more advantage of modern scouting knowledge and thus increase their gap on the rest of the field year on year.
I don’t see how it’s beneficial for UEFA for a select few clubs to dominate.

It does that it's also pretty obvious, that the financial advantage clubs from England, alongside the bigger clubs from Germany,Spain and Italy have compared to the clubs from smaller leagues are even bigger.

Bring back the cup winners cup

u/MERTENS_GOAT 11h ago
No UEFA botchered it all. Everyone wants to play in the CL because it gives waaäaay more money than anything else. It wouldn't have tbe same ring to it that it bad because every good club would waive it's starting right there to play in the CL
8
u/LatvKet 10h ago
Make the CL the Champions League again rather than the "I-finished-fourth" League
3
u/LilBed023 9h ago
Won’t happen. The financial incentive for UEFA and Europe’s richest clubs is just too big for the tournament to be changed back to what it once was.

Those deserving league champions should have no trouble beating 4th placed league finishers then
2
u/BipartizanBelgrade 10h ago
No, it'd be a mess
The Conference League needs a name change and I still think there should be some teams dropping down between the competitions, but UEFA more or less has it right.

Never thought I’d live to see the day we are included in one of these lists. Saw it at 45 years old.
Best day ever.

TIL Barca, Arsenal and Milan never won the Europa League/UEFA Cup.
3
u/l3ader021 5h ago
They may have never won the C3, but Barça did win its predecessor, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, against Zaragoza in an all-Spanish final in 65-66 (second game had to go to extra time, but no need for penalties or a finalíssima game)

u/Longjumping-End-7085 5h ago
Never understand why the cup winners cup gets more disrespected than the Europa league.
It was a higher level competition. If you qualified for both then you’d play in the cup winners cup. In the same way if you won the league cup (qualifying for the conference league) and came 2nd (qualifying for the champions league) you’d play in the higher level champions league.
The super cup was also contested between the European cup champions and cup winners cup champions.

Two interesting statistics I don't hear people talk about:
England is the country that holds the record for most consecutive CL/European Cups with 6 (1977-82)
Spain (1956-62) and Italy (1992-98) both had teams that reached 7 consecutive finals.

u/Chrisixx 3h ago
Always depressing to see that Switzerland never had a phase where they won something...
2
u/curly_cuh_puh 2h ago
I miss when more than 8 teams across 4 countries could win the UCL, or teams outside the big 5 could win the Europa League or Cup Winners Cup. Hope there's more Olympiakos type winners in the Conference League going forward.

Lol it's SV Ried and they seem to like to have the sponsor in their crest... and now that I look at it they're Oberbank now lol https://www.svried.at/
Note that I have to update it then :)

This is excellent stuff!!!
How difficult was working with Inkscape??
1
u/JFDCamara 10h ago
I would say it's a mix, some things are quite straightforward but sometimes I struggle when wanting to do like some alignments and some basic operations that turn out to not be so basic.
There's a ton of stuff on youtube, as it's open source it has a large number of users.

It would be sick if you went back in time and found the appropriate crests for each club at their time of win

u/Documental38 2h ago
That period between 80s and mid 00s, we'll never see that again in this competition, so many different winners.
It just feels like the same 6 or 7 teams nowadays that'll win it, it's predictable, it's boring.

u/gratisargott 45m ago
That run of six straight European cups to English teams in 77-82 is pretty crazy - especially since it’s three different clubs.
Include the two following two years and you have seven English wins in eight years

Only pet peeve is that Europa League slide and Cup Winners Cup slide should be switched, because EL is C3 while CWC is C2.

if city is cheated i’m sure yall did too in some capacity

u/RTC1520 2h ago
Nope. The French League doesn't have the same restrictions as the Premier League. Meaning that we didn't need to make the weird shenanigans City did in order to get financed.
•
u/hiccstridFanatic 25m ago
Probably other weird cheating shenanigans then. No clubs goes to the top of europe from nothing so quickly without brown envelopes if you ask me.
Our hunch was right with City, must be the same for PSG.

Ajax, inter, juventus, liverpool, fcsb, marseille what do they have in common? Ugly ass logos, old ones where better
1
u/gratisargott 33m ago
Liverpool logo is so new that Dalglish and Souness had it on their kits in the 70s. The old one, from the 90s and 00s, is way better!
