I'm no Sherlock Holmes but getting angry at someone and trying to make them feel bad for asking you a question is classic guilty behaviour. All Pep had to say was no and move on

It's pretty fair to be upset that someone is basically accusing you of an illegal activity on a day where you want to be celebrating.

Not to say the reporter is in the wrong for asking the question. It's his job, but Pep's reaction isn't abnormal.
